"IT LOOKS LIKE HOOPS BROUGHT OUT THE TROOPS"
Walter Becker Aug 3, 1996

Like Hoops, Dan & I are still suffering from this new disorder.
Hypodanemia. Symptoms include(but are not limited to):
a) walking around in a daze humming Steely tunes
b) beating on one's dashboard as if it was the stage at a Steely show
c) getting strange looks from acquaintances as you describe the near
religious experiences enjoyed at the Dan Shows.
d) attempting to get inheritances from relatives (before they pass
on) in order to follow the Dan around the world
e) preoccupation with why Wayne K. has wore the same tee shirt on
Aug 2, Aug 3, and in the pathfinder photos
f) etc etc etc...........

With brevity in mind here is a review of the shows and ventions

Aug 2 (Tinley, IL)

Met at Gambones for beverages and burritos. What awsome
company to be had. Hoops, Maggie, Henry, Honest Lawyer, the Buckinghams
(and their neighbors), Jim, Jeff, and others. It is truly a great feeling
to be in the company of others who feel as passionately about something as
you do. Enough said.

The show as expected was an unforgettable experience.
By sheer coincidence our seats were right next to Hoops and Maggi whom we had
just met for the first time in person just a couple of hours earlier. The
new stuff sounded extremely promising and enticing. In agreeance with
Hoops, Walter's vocals were excellent. Cash Only Island & Jack of Speed had
us bumping out of our seats.

The intermission festivities put us on a high that we may
never come down from. Dave R. rolled out the welcome mat and treated us
like we were the celebs. He truly went out of his way to make the most
memorable night, just that. Our only regret, like Hoops, is that those
precious few minutes were not able to be shared by all. An experience we
will never forget. Maggie kept mentioning how she was hyperventilating.
She ended up showing Donald pictures of her grandaughter. That was soo
hilarious.

The second half of the show was more fired up than the
first. Scorching solos from Walter & Wayne as well as some very exciting
stand out performances from each of the players.

All in all: A night we will NEVER forget.

Aug 3 (E. Troy)

A better Danvention & a better show. Somehow the Rinehart
Rambler's (or the expensive RV as mentioned in Letters From Ginger on
pathfinder) stereo seemed to perform during the entire Danvention. Our amps
had been overheating and cutting out before and after the show. Somehow the
Gods looked upon us with favor. Libations, sensations, barbeque creations,
and great relations were on tap. I hope that the couple who had lost their
wallet have recovered it.

Once again we were blessed in acquiring 1st row seats. No
special tricks, just perseverance. Dan & I stood during the entire show at
the feet of Wayne and Walter. What a place to be. We gained an even
greater appreciation for their stunning guitar artistry. The crowd seemed
to be more into the show, but security was keeping them from coming up to
the fromt when they wanted to dance. At one point early in the show, Walter
asked security to leave them alone stating, "It looks like their having
fun." The whole band seemed more charged up than the previous night. It
was easy to communicate with Walter & Wayne, but Donald seemed so tied up in
his playing that he didn't communicate with the crowd much. I do believe
that we got his attention during My Old School. As he was conducting the
close of the tune he began these chopping motions in the air. We of course
mimicked these motions (there must have been 5-6 of us by then) and he
looked over a couple of times and even began to do something that might be
perceived as a little smile. Im sure donald would never admit it though.
The best part was that Maggi got to stand right on the stage in front of
Donald for the entire encore. Security didn't even touch her. That was cool.

For our continued homage throughout the show, Wayne gave Dan
his pick.
Several people came up to him after the show wanting to see it and telling
Dan that he deserved it because he looked like he enjoyed the show more than
anyone. I don't think that he enjoyed more than anyone, he just had the
guts to stand up and enjoy the show to its fullest.

Next year (or whenever they tour next) Dan & I plan to
spend our vacation following them around the country. Lets all get together
and charter a mobile Danvention bus (kinda like MTVs Choose or Loose bus:
Just as political but with much more integrity). Maggi could be our diver,
Pete and Hoops will be our tour guides.

Truly the most awesome experience ever.
