Enjoying a glass of wine introduced to me by a friend with very good taste. It's from the Toasted Head Vineyard, in Ca....even the chardonnay is good, and I'm not a white wine drinker, once you've tried the red, you'll want to order a case.
I know I'll catch hell for this, but I have to comment on Yes, who am am going to see at Mohegan Sun in a couple of weeks. They still sound great, if not the same, after 25 years. Back in the mid 70's, during my middle school years I listened to them constantly, then eventually my interest trailed off toward other artists. Hearing them now sounding as good as ever is so refreshing, even if for old time sake. A true "Yes head" friend of mine here in CT is so enthused about seeing them I had to tag along.

A thought regarding actor Steve Buscemi, who in my opinion epitomizes the classic Steely Dan misfit. Apparently Buscemi was a big fan of William Burroughs, even meeting the author shortly before his death, and has a screenplay based on one of Burrough's novels ready to go into production. Can't you see Buscemi as the perfect narrator of Bad Sneakers, or perhaps even Kid Charlemagne himself?

my copy of "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" by ellington is spelled as: "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" and also my copy of "New East St. Louis Toodle-Oo"

on the 1999 pretzel logic cd it is "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo," on the abc gatofold vinyl (abcd-808) it is "EAST ST.LOUIS TOODLE-OO." it should be noted that the text on my vinyl version is all caps.

Gretchen, interesting the way Neptunes tries to make the biggest sound with the fewest instruments. As with SD, every instrument, or sound has a purpose in defining the track.

The british jazzcrooner Jamie Cullum recently did a live interpretation of Frontin', which is really great and warm sounding. Pharrel liked it so much that Cullum was guest on the next NERD-show singin Frontin' with Pharrell. You can hear it at www.jamiecullum.com , though the quality isn't fantastic.

I love the Neptunes/N.E.R.D. (OK, it's the overgrown 12 year old in me, the same one who loves Alicia Keyes "You Don't Know My Name) but Pharell's voice is like a throwback to the 70's Mayfield/Kendricks days, the sound is quirk, funky, cool. They are considered part of the whole "Neo Soul" sound but they're more off the beaten track, using their "nerdy" image to their advantage, similar to Donald and Walter, and coming up with a truly unique and unforgettable sound. "she wants to move" is an entertaining video with the 3 nerds operating a space machine shaped as, uh, well, pull it up on yahoo and you'll see. Honestly, the song will stick in your mind!

(Sorry, I don't have it myself so I can't speak of my own impressions. I know you're probably looking for personal reactions from fellow posters, but this is the best that I can do.)

"It is rare for a jazz disc to be achingly beautiful. But on this elegant trio set, pianist Bill Charlap packs an emotional wallop without getting schmaltzy as he takes a dark approach to Leonard Bernstein's show music.

"Charlap comes to this music from inside the musical-theater world. He is the son of the late Broadway composer Moose Charlap ('Peter Pan') and singer Sandy Stewart. But Charlap is also a leading jazz pianist who makes the Great American Songbook sound new and resonant. His choice of Bernstein is welcome, because the tunes are marvelous, and they make great scaffolding for the trapeze art of jazz.

Any thoughts on The Neptunes (+N.E.R.D.), who are often compared to SD, and who also admits to be very influenced by SD! In a recent interview with Entertaintment weekly, Pharrell called SD a dope band, and said that his favorite album is Pretzel logic, especially Rikki and Any major dude.

The posts about waiting for something SD to happen reminded me of a recent conversation I had with a pal here in Chicago (non-nethead Danfan).

We were discussing what previous year in the career of SD that 2004 is most like. At first she said 1997 since it was the year after the tour. But then, of course, in 1997, we hadn't had a new SD studio album in ages.

I dunno, but somehow I feel like it is like 1981 (after "Gaucho" and before DF's solo album) or maybe 1984 (nothing's going to happen for years but everyone's debating whether to buy the fresh new audio format of SD albums. (1984 it was CD that everyone wasn't so sure about). Or maybe 1987. Wouldn't 1990 be cool?

But truth is, it's just 2004.

Do you think our boys are missing it all as much as we miss them? Do they feel that same sense of sentiment for those magical warm summer days of last year? I wonder... All I know is, last summer was the most amazing time of my life.. I cannot remember a time when I have had such pure FUN! Just FUN! Not even as a child. Many of you helped to make that possible, and I thank you.

Last night in green we were discussing the lack of SD news, comparing it to last year at this time and how depressing it is. Is there any chance of, perhaps, SD doing a tribute concert to Cornelius later in the year? Roseland would be ideal........

Nice to see some traffic on the board again.

Over Easter, I was up at a place called Byron Bay for the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival (www.bluesfest.com.au) and witnessed one of the strangest musical arrangements of an SD song I have heard.

As an encore, the lead singer (black American with an exceptional voice) announced in a rasta accent "Now we going back to the island man....the island of Manhattan!!....we take a classic....and we f*ck it up real good!!!!"

Then straight into a reggae version of Realin' with the chorus changing to heavy metal !!!! His comment about taking a classic, etc was certainly true.

Actually, it was quite scary.

Hoops - Yes it was the June 13, 2000 concert at the Los Angeles Universal Amphitheater when the Mancini children were introduced as being in the audience. That was the one SD show I attended that tour.

Marian McPartland has Alicia Keys on the current week's "Piano Jazz" on NPR. I'm so sure that Keys is a great match with MM, BUT I was impressed with Keys performance. She came on as part of a trio. I think Donald may have mentioned a while back that he thought highly of her—is that correct or am I mistaken?

Great segment on Henry Mancini this morning on NPR's "Weekend Edition-Saturday." Mancini would have been 80 this week. He died ten years ago of cancer at age 70. Last Tuesday, the U.S. Postal Service released a Mancini stamp in his honor. A tribute album was also released, "Ultimate Mancini," which also features his daughter Monica (who has appeared on "Piano Jazz"), Tom Scott, Plas Johnson, and, most interestingly of all, Take 6's version of "Moon River, " featuring Stevie Wonder on harmonica.

Of course, clearly, it would have been great if Steely Dan's version of Mancini's "Pete's Pad" from the 2000 tour was part of this, but it is not. Of course, Steely Dan retitled it, "Hank's Pad." I seem to recall hearing that Mancini's family was in the audience at one of the L.A.-area shows that year.

I'm not aware of Becker and Fagen having ever confirming a "Song For My Father"/"Rikki Don't Lose That Number" connection. And it is simply a riff that is in question. I've always thought the same might be argued for Silver's "African Queen" and Steely Dan's "Pretzel Logic."

The Cleveland paper you cite had a great interview with Fagen's father in the summer of 2000.

1) Any Danfan can submit a track for the Dandom compilation regardless if the person or group have been on a previous Danfan compilation. However, in the event that there are more tracks submitted than can fit on one CD, then those who have never had a track on any previous Danfan compilation CD will be given more consideration in being included on the CD version.

2) If a specific track or recording by a specific person or persons has been on a previous Danfan compilation CD, then it can't appear on this one. So say you record Chain Lightning and it was on a previous DanFan compilation. Your "Chain Lightning" can't appear on this one BUT you can submit a different song that was never released on a Danfan compilation.

Has Becker or Fagen ever said that is in fact the source of inspiration? Or is it coincidence that has taken on a life of its own?

I seem to remember that Horace Silver was at one of the Los Angeles SD shows last fall. Has he ever performed with B/F?

Marion's Peabody Award-winning show, "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz" on NPR (USA's National Public Radio) has been running for over 25 years and has featured musical performances by everyone from Dave Brubeck, Carmen McRae and Lyle Mays to Clint Eastwood, Judy Collins, Bruce Hornsby and, most memorably to us Danfans, Steely Dan. (The show featuring Steely Dan is rumored to be re-broadcaset later this summer.)

It's been about a decade since the custom CDs of our very own H.B. Friedenberg broke new audio ground in what we now take for granted.

WHAT:
It's now time for the Dandom CD Compilation. Last year, a compilation CD was to be created as Danfan tribute to the songs on "Decade" in celebration of a decade of Dandom. Through a couple of changes, this disc is now back on track, thanks to Danfiend and others. This compilation is now viewed as an opportunity for fun, sharing and getting to know more about each other in the Greater Dandom.

Maybe you are a Danfan who is also an accomplished musicians with extensive studio experience. Or maybe you are a Danfan with Apple's Garage band and some interesting talents. Or... well, you get the idea. Well, this is your chance to share your STEELY DAN-INSPIRED music amongst friends.

Those of us compiling the CD, will take what we can and include it on a very special CD that can be acquired by the Dan minions. In the case of the Dandom Digest, that's potentially well over 1,500 people.

No doubt you have experienced annoying spam in email or abuse of some of your favorite Internet discussion forums (Steely Dan or otherwise). Unfortunately, this kind of activity is also hitting the "Dandom Digest's" companian guiestbook/discussion board/blog-gette, "The Bluebook."

As a result, the Bluebook is mostly down at the moment but will be back pretty much in the same format next week. However, there will be one difference. Posts by anonymous parties (some of whom are spammers) will be screened before they appear. Registered users will still have the opportunity to post in real time. It's much less a big deal than this seems. Just know, you can't post to the Bluebook right now, but will be able to again in a few days; if you do post then, you can still remain anonymous, but then may be a delay in your item appearing. Or, you can get a password and post in real time. This would be all taken care of already but I have been swamped lately.

I'm sure you're correct about it being "Take Five", but maybe your last

Thanks for all your writings, comments and support for a guestbook/discussion forum focussed on all things Steely Dan and immediate tangents.

Just an update:
Although there are many other better guestbook software programs out there (some that I even use and admin), many of you have stated a strong preference that the BlueBook continue to look as much as possible like the one we have known for so many years. So, yes it will look like classic the BlueBook you've known.

However, I am still wrapping up the scripting/programming needed to prevent the spam-like posts. I expect I will be done by Sunday evening, if not sooner.

In the interim, feel free to email me posts that you need to get up right away and I will put them up manually as I can.
