August 2003 BlueBook Entries
Posted by: jw, baltimore, md.A late posting after the 27 august 2003 (nissan pavillion / bristow, va.) concert.
I feel very odd criticizing anything concerning donald fagen and walter becker.......but,
I'd like to add my voice those serious fans who are dissappointed that so little of the new album, EVERYTHING MUST GO, is being performed on this 2003 tour. Only "godwhacker", "slang of ages" and "things i miss the most" were included in last wednesday night's two sets.
Ironically, 5 tunes from AJA made the setlist; ["aja", "peg", "josie", "black cow", and "home at last"]
and 4 from THE ROYAL SCAM.
["kid charlemagne" "the caves of altimira" "sign in stranger", and "hatian divorce"]
In spite of my preference for more songs from EVERYTHING MUST GO, I was ecstatic just to see Mr. Fagen and Mr. Becker looking and performing so well. The band was in fine form, and I was delighted by some new background vocal augmentations.
Walter becker and Donald Fagen, in my humble opinion, are the greatest pop music RECORDING artists, EVER, and I'm happy that they are still making records and touring, period.
Also mention-worthy is the fact that Keith Carlock lived up to the praise that has been given him in the postings I've read at this website (in the Bluebook). His drum solo on "josie" just blew everyone away... i mean really!
Let's hope that there are more Steely Dan/Donald Fagen/Walter Becker studio recordings to come!!

misheard: "Hello mon amour"

correct: "Sleep on the beach and make it"
song: "Josie"

Posted by: steelydoubt, related to my last post,
if you do have an idea for a flavor (with a witty dan related name) you could put it in this form.
http://www.benjerry.com/our_company/contact_us/forms/suggestion_intro.cfm
I hope to see "thirl wirled man" the next time i go the the seven eleven.
Posted by: steelydoubt, i just saw on aol that aol users can submit names for the new ben and jerrys flavor. i seem to remember some time ago we were coming up with steely dan related ice cream names, too bad the name for the new ice cream has to be election related.

Posted by: Randall, Alive and Feeling FineHello One and All,
I just got back from a very relaxing weekend "away from it all." Before I left civilization, I went to the Nissan show and had a blast. The weather was almost as amazing as the concert. I can't describe the evening any better than Oleander did, so I won't even try. Suffice it to say, it was awesome.
I also had the privilege of meeting some fine Danizens in person: Sam, Scotty, Alan (fanofdan) and Nancy...it was great to meet all of you! Hopefully our paths will cross again. Maybe when I visit Australia you'll return the favor by giving me an impromptu midnight "tour" of Sydney :).
Special thanks to Sam for putting together the "mini-Danfest" at the Battlefield Inn and for the nifty T-shirt. I'm very appreciative!
Scotty and Alan: I hope the rest of your trip is super-fine and you make it safely back home. Please have a VB (or 10) for me when you return to Oz.
See you at Roseland!

hello one and all,
Incredible performance last night in the Borgata ballroom. a few highlights...
Sat in fifth row left, in front of Herington who was phenomenal. He loves and absolutely wailed on the maple piece (a Sadowsky?) with perfection and grace. Played with feedback from an amp which he held ~30 secs before breaking into DTMA. Came out during the break to chat w/friends. Enjoyed a cold Heineken later.
Walt seemed really upbeat and more animated than usual. His vocals were excellent and are great on Haitian Divorce; video very entertaining. Parker's band rocks. Hope they keep these in the second tour leg.
Great profile view of Donald and his midi-"friends" - tussled hair on top and back, no white jacket. Sounded a bit tired. He isn't "messing up lyrics". He sometimes just provided a suggestion of the lyric and let the audience fill in the blanks. In doing so, he appears more interactive. when most of audience sang "retha frankin" he didn't say anything but extended his index finger toward the front center to someone who no doubt knew otherwise.
Luch With Gina was rolled out in place of TIMTM, otherwise same set list. not a bad Lunch for a first attempt. Crowd did a fine job singin along to new tunes.
drum solo was incredible; seemed longer than usual. Carlock later walked past us with some buddies into the hotel complex. nice going, dude!
took me 3 shows to realize that the whole band seems to be singing "the steely dan show", including cornelius who otherwise looked as stoic and pensive as Donald is expresssive. second set opener is a cute, fun tune that doesn't lose its cool in spite of flirting with being corny. just lay it all on don and walt.
Sound was apparently sublime from 22 rows ~center, I hear. Not so good closer to left - e.g., couldn't fully pick up Barney's bass, esp. on Lunch. There were some feedback issues early on but cleared up soon enough.
best word I can find to describe the spectacle was "different". Borgata full of characters right out of Steely Dan songs. Lots of nervous excitement. 60-somethings boogeying to Hey 19. Gaudy, overcrowded casino hotel with exquisite evening profile that melts in to the sky, and a tacky neon "Borgata" sign above the top floor to ruin the effect. Glittering neon ads everywhere juxtaposing depressed housing projects, perpetual construction and lost souls. AC has some serious issues.
"cool audience. cool little gig," (WB, omitting the prviously-used modifier),

Posted by: WuDuF, Bethel, CTOK-the Leg II setlist debate. I'm not actually going to list what the sets should look like-you KNOW my pet peeve about complaining about what's done or not done. However, having seen the band live for 9 years now, there are some I've never heard and would love to.
Your Gold Teeth ( I & II)
Show Biz Kids
New Frontier (D.F.)
On the Dunes (D.F.)
Surf and or Die (W.B.)
The Fez
Pretzel Logic
That's all I'll ask for at this time. Thanks!
Posted by: Peter Q, BrooklynBy the way, Katy is Josie - the use of "crucified" provides a clue to "prays like a Roman with her eyes on fire," ie, the Romans who crucified Christ. Unless you think Roman with her eyes on fire means she looks like a Versace model or something.
Posted by: Peter Q, BrooklynInteresting! Laszlo Kovacs is the name of the character Jean-Paul Belmondo plays in Godard's film breathless. B&F's lyrical style borrows immensely from Fellini, Godard and Antonioni. I haven't had the patience to undertake the project but I am sure if you slough through Antonioni's films scene by scene you will find them verbally described in some or other songs.
Posted by: AH, MeSoWise said: "In St. Paul on 08/07 I'd swear Walt intro'd a keyboard player who was not TB. Any ideas? He played all the TB parts (mostly piano, moved to Rhodie, etc when DF roamed) but I was listening for Ted's name & it was something different."
You remember correctly. Walt did introduce someone else. However, it was TB playing. Walter seemed to be amusing himself that evening. I can't remember the exact names that he used, but for both Ted Baker and Michael Leonhart he introduced them with names taken from classic cinema. The names, or parts thereof that I recall are: Antonioni, Fellini, (and maybe part of the name Lazlo Kovacs).

Posted by: Little Wild One, the travel deskDear Scotty, Alan and Sam,
Thanks for a great night, mates! Instead of the top shelf Mexican I was headed for, including the proverbial pool of margaritas, I got half-baked pizza and margs-in-a-bucket....but I WAS happy to hear that everyone made their connection!
Beers in the back of a bus until 6 am? What a way to end two weeks of Dan Karma!
Looking forward to the post show report...and then of course,
Babylon Turnpike, TAKE IT!! (Sadly for us...)
XOXOX from your pal!
P.S. That clicking sound you here is SOH snapping....

There's another one....
Posted by: George , Harford County MDWhat was the set list for Atlantic City? Could anyone tell me? Thanks
Posted by: Scotty, Alan & Sam , SyracuseG'Day All,
Trying to use the ineractive TV web service, which sucks big time !
Having a few quiet ones after a huge night which saw us drinking beer in the back of a bus till 6am. We got booted from the bar around 1am.
Off to the fair in an hour or so, to see if we can find any of the band members wandering around munching on cotton candy.
Tonight is the 5th and final show for us before the long flight home tomorrow.
If there are any new surprises, we will try and fire this TV thing-a-me up again and post later.
SouthOfHollywood and LWO - Thanks for the logistical co ordination last night If Sam got himself a cell phone we would not have needed phone hook ups from NY to CA to TX to NY !
More later
Cheers,
Scotty, Alan & Sam

Posted by: Gretchen, relaxing with my tea in CTStrolled by the Roseland Ballroom yesterday just to whet the appetite for 9/12. Cannot wait, everyone comtemplating this MUST GO! I also think I encountered a real life Pixeleen at Balthazaar last night..she was seated next to me on one of those banquettes. "Like, my boyfriend and me, like spent 10 days in this hotel and like we left one day and came back to tiny footprints in the bathtub! borgata last nite- LUNCH WITH GINA- this really rocks live,
and the band seems into it- DF really moved around during this #;
most people didnt know it, and were confused, cos it sounded great!
i think of DF during the 74 record plant version of *king of the world*: "cooking!"
previous posts mention the sound- it was cleared up by second set-
nice venue- ads mentioned sellout- but there were rows of empty seats; holds less than 3000 people. most people sat, some danced- security was on them ASAP- until the last two #s, then everyone was up.
im wiped- was out all night- but highlights include:
during slang, walter: : "this is atlantic city, right? if you can get slanged anywhere, it's here!"
walter, again: "this is the coolest gig of the tour, this is the coolest audience!" surprised NOT to hear what a great f** audience;
carlock really impressed my musician friends- as did pugh- you have to be cool to play trombone like that! cornelius is oldschool cool, mr. slick; the women were hot- loved them! (we were close- started out in 13th row-little schmooze of the confused event staff got us up to 5th row- anyone who gambled at the borgata pre/post knew the staff, at least the dealers, were shaky- place was packed!)
all in all, great night- band was tight, but not tired; DF looked
not 100%- i cant help but think 1. he's dying, and this is the last tour, or 2. his stage persona, of the old befuddled rock star, trotting out the hits, is some giant inside joke between him and WB
(who should leave haitian divorce alone- great to hear this and caves live)wasnt much of an exodus during slang- it was cool that people hung around;
roseland is a definite possibility- couldnt see it [entertain it]until last night, but the thought of them adding pixeleen or green book, along with LWG, intrigues me!
later,

Posted by: Bodacious Cowgirl, still reelin'Hey everyone! I haven't visited for a couple o' years--glad to see the GB is still kicking. Finally made it back from the Borgata, which is only about 20 min. from my humble abode; made a pit stop at my local haunt; saw some friends; one martini magically turned into 3, you know how it goes... But WOW, what a fun show--Lunch w/ Gina was an awesome surprise! At my first listen to EMG, that is one of the tracks that stood out for me. I went to the Camden show last Sat., and didn't expect any set changes. The sound was quite muddled at first, but improved as the show went on. Fez off to Carlock and Herrington!!! I was considering Roseland in 2 weeks, but trying to talk myself out of it just for the sake of not spending a bunch of $, but all that nonsense be damned--that's what AMEX is for! Hope to meet up with some of you fine folks at the Le Bar Bat wing ding, or whatever...
Peace out,

I had that thought, too, but I don’t think it was Bill either. I think WB said his name (first or last?) was Alexander but I'm not positive.
Regardless, the show, like all of 'em this tour the way it sounds, was incredible. Starting with Aja(!) makes a great statement about whether or not this band can cut classic SD. That just blows me away...
I know there's a long collective wish list for the setlist, but was anyone else surprised that they're not doing Gina? It seems like a natural for this band. Saved for the 2nd leg?
Pls forgive the rambling...
Posted by: Eric, San Diego, CaliforniaThat was probably Bill Charlap. He was a guest performer, according to the official steely dan website, as well as the other keyboardist on EMG.

Posted by: Harvey, Great show last night as previously reported. The crowd was just about soldd out and was very enthusiastic! Standing O's, going crazy and LOUD after many songs and the band loved it. Also, Becker changed the lyrics a bit on "Slang of Ages", as follows:
"These tabs look iffy, you say they're fine

Posted by: Roy.Scam, VirginiaOleander~ Splendid description of the evening at Manassas, August 27. Made me feel as if I was right there with you. Oh wait! I was right there with you. Well, thanks for putting down the words to help me mentally re-create it in case, some day, in a fit of senility, I forget what a day and night it was. -- I'm so glad I talked you into this trip.
If anyone is sitting on the fence about attending the Dan 2003 tour, don't listen to that cautious, frugal, inner self. Plead, threaten or trick yourself into it. Get up in your own face if necessary. I myself, was indecisive: The expense, the mileage, the abandonment of other matters of importance, the exhaustion and anticlimax of the next day's return to work. Not to mention the previously unknown deterrents such as drowning and simultaneous electrocution by multiple converging lightning bolts. But my friend Oleander saved me from that bugabear mentality with her gift for organizing forays and her enthusiastic style of persuasion. And now I won't have to hate myself for missing an irreplaceable experience. And now I won't also have to hate those among you who have had the good fortune to make a stop on this tour.
WHAT I DID THIS AUGUST 27TH
As fezo and ole described, the WHETHURR (That's the worst spell of weather we've had around here in a long time) was real, real bad for a while there. Earlier, I'd spent 4 hours driving through a perfect pastoral day in my convertible with the top down; then when we started heading for Manassas, it instantly became wrath-of-God, last-20-minutes-of-Ghostbusters, meteorological mayhem. How bad was the storm? We're talking lightning bolts with 10 to 20 tributaries slashing from Mars to the core of the earth in no-point-no seconds. Even Danfans on the way to a Dan concert appeared momentarily distracted. The Audi we were in was nearly split into two separate T's. But the distraction only prevailed through the most flagrantly life-threatening crashes, then group reverie was restored.-- One of the evening's highlights was when we approached the pavilion and the loudspeaker was repeating the message, 'If you're not within the gates, you are advised to return to your vehicle until the worst of the storm subsides." along with some mumbling about the National Weather Service and it's prophylactic warnings. This was a highlight for me because I don't remember a single person turning back or even slowing down. These were Steely Dan fans on what might be a final pilgrimage. What possible PA announcement could turn back that crimson tide? The bad weather lasted through the first third of the show and neither the audience nor the players experienced dampened enthusiasm; the storm kind of came off as a really elaborate light show. In all honesty, I was real impressed with Donald's nerve. Imagine having the brass balls to sing "Godwhacker" under a tin roof, surrounded by electrical equipment, when lightening bolts were already striking within twenty feet or so.
Any description of the concert I might offer would probably sound like Cinquegenarian babbling, but don't be misled by my verbal limitations, they were sensational! This group of musicians is ... Shit! I don't have any words to convey it. Just trust me. If you don't see them, you're a lame ass. (Sorry, sometimes it's necessary to become abrasive; it's for your own good.)
Perhaps I'll try to do commentary on the concert later, but Oleander did it about as well as possible. Thanks to Ole and Fezo and Dave for a great time. Sorry I missed Bill and the Australians, but it was good to see Hutch again. When a musician of his caliber is raving, you know you're hearing primo stuff.
Don't deliberate. Just go.

I've been hassling the guy who wouldn't give us one at Jones Beach, because we were Australian. I've tracked him down at every show and tonight he finally relented ! He said "Oh just fill out a bogus form and take one". So now we have the mug. I told him I will hunt him down at Syracuse for the cap and he said, OK - you win.
So thanks very much for the offer, but I've managed to nag him into submission !!!
Cheers,

Posted by: Scotty & Alan, Saratoga SpringsG'Day all,
Just back from the show at SPAC. What a night !!
We walked through the gates and almost walked straight into Tom Barney. He was walking around the crowd and no one recognised him !! Except us, that is, so we talked to him for a while and gave him one of those koala's we were giving out at the Jones Beach danfest which he promptly attached to his lanyard. Very cool.
SPAC is simply beautiful. Set in a national park, with streams running right through the venue, it is a stunning location for a concert.
Yet another lightening storm. Donald asked if we had all been "cleansed" by the rains.
No change to the set list. The sound was spot on tonight.
Get this guys. When Ted Baker began his intro solo on My Old School, Donald yells into the microphone "Go you big bitch !" Cracked us up.
Sitting in the business centre at the Hilton in Saratoga Springs and one other lunatic is in here with us. He is printing out some horse racing data. Just started to talk to him and he was at the show as well. In fact, we are sitting with mjrr dude who posts on the yellow !!! Isn't it a small steely world ?
We have ditched our travel agents sad itinary and will bus it direct from Saratoga Springs to Syracuse instead of cab from Saratoga to Albany, fly from Albany to Newark, then fly from Newark to Syracuse.
We have drunk the hotel dry of Heineken and need to make an alternative selection, so will sign off now.
Hopefully, we can post something from the State Fair.
Cheers,
Scotty & Alan

I recently read a new novel entitled "Black Maps",by peter Spiegelman. Basically,it's a "White Collar Crime Thriller,if I had to categorize. Wonder if the authors somewhat of a Fan,based on hos references to the "Illustrious Dan!"
For instance, early in the novel his protagonist refers to ".....putting on a Steely Dan disc-music to (sic) launder money by."
Later in the novel,he refers to a lunch meeting with a colleague in a bar in NYC called "The Black Cow." (Real Place,or another nod?)
Still later,he has Breakfast at "Rose Darlings".
...and finally, towards the end of the novel,he starts a sentence by saying:"In the corner of my eye!"
It was a pleasant surprise for me to find these little Bon Mots, kind of like in a film, when one Director will "Quote" another! I thought it was pretty cool!

Once again, Walter plays the wisecracking smartass to Donald's brooding cynic. I still think they could be a great comedy team if they'd learn not to say "ya know" so much.
Posted by: Scotty & Alan, Saratoga SpringsG'Day all,
Interesting past 2 days we just had. The Nissan show was mind blowing. Seemed the whole band cut loose and let rip. Herington was on fire and Carlock's drum solo got a standing ovation even before he was half way through it.
And rain ! We were soaked to the skin, lightening going off every few seconds, but we had a ball.
Yesterday we arrived at Lake George. Our travel agent in Sydney said it wasn't far from SPAC. Yeah right ! Spent the day tooling around Lake George and trying to scam a room in Saratoga Springs. Everything is booked out because of the holiday weekend but we hit the jackot this morning. We are now checked out of Lake George and checked into the Hilton in Saratoga Springs. About 2 blocks away from SPAC.
FREE internet access at the Hilton, so we might wander down for the sound check and report back if we hear anything not currently in the set list.
Had a great "Instant Danfest" at the Battlefield Inn, Mannasas. The staff even put on a free buffett for us.
Randall - nice wheels man.
Nancy - Loved the Iggi's photo's
And Pam, even though we did not get to meet you, we really appreciate the gift. Thank you.
Sam - We will be travelling to Syracuse by greyhound bus tomorrow, arriving at about 4.30pm so don't sweat it when you are late to leave home (which you will be).
Danfiend, LWO, SouthOfHollywood - Wish you guys were here with us, but glad in a way as we can recover from the alcholic poisoning we all got in NYC.
Cheers for now

Posted by: Gretchen, far from the tick and smoke of the city....Honeybun, I think that pic must have been from the 80's, judging by the dark hair and eyebrows. No one really looked great in that horrible decade. Also, Mr. Fagen does not look confident in that picture, thus making it less than flattering. He is at his most confident when playing or in the studio, or with Walt or other bandmembers. Being famously shy, he was out of his element there and that's why he doesn't look like the Don we both love so dearly. He is one of those guys who looks even better as he gets older, thus the Don of today. (Although, there's a very sexy pic in the Aja liner notes of him back in those days, shirtless, posing with his dog).

In the early 80's this soap was only available at health food type stores - at least around here. It was one of a very few bio degradable soaps - so it was first discovered by backpackers. Certainly it was the only thing I bought in a health food shop at that time - what no pizza or beer?
Wouls I consider ever trying it again - possibly - but I found out I was allergic to liquid soaps about three years ago - Dr's tried everything to figure out why I kept breaking out all over. Finally a business trip - no liquid soap and I didn't break out. Now I have to use Dove - deoderant and fragrence free ... I'm sure this stuff would be fine.

Posted by: oleander, lay it all on don & waltHey all--I am suffering SEVERELY from post-Manassas bliss. WHAT A NIGHT! (I quote)
We had a nice old-school GB miniDanFest with Roy.Scam, fezo, the Permasqueeze, & me. As usual, I wore Steely-themed garb--having to do with coffee & New Orleans (OK: where is coffee mentioned in SD songs?) After a mellow hang and scrumptious preconcert repast expertly prepared by chef fezo, we piled in the Permmobile and headed to the venue. It was a perfect, cloudless late summer evening. Of course, as we got closer, we drove smack into desperate and dark clouds and tornado-force winds which morphed further into the god-awful-scariest thunderstorm in recent memory. Zeus must have been hitting the uppers hard, and his hurling hand was hot, hot, hot. I was not sanguine on our ability to make it to the show, but despite being soaked to the bone and sure of eventual electrocution, we bravely made it in. And found Hutch and friends--great to see you! I hope the move and gigs go great--and shark deville, straight outta Tampa. The lightning continued to enhance the visuals onscreen for quite a while, and R.S commented that the setlist should be amended to include “Chain Lightning.”
The start was delayed a bit while everyone’s adrenaline rush edged off, but no sooner did the lights dim than the endorphins started to spike. We had lovely center orch seats and could see everyone quite vividly. What a rush when the band walked on and started to play! It was as noted earlier--they were saying: we’re going to fucking pin your ears back, so get used to it. This was my first and next-to-last show of the tour, and when Mr. F & Mr. B walked on (without shaking hands this time), I was just a bag of morphine-analog gel. Damn, I’d go to a HUNDRED shows, and I wouldn’t care if they played “Peg” ten times in a ROW!
Except for an occasional feedback squeak, the sound was very good. The set list has been posted. At first, I was a little dubious about the down-tempo treatment of “Babylon Sisters” and a couple of other first-set tunes, but “Godwhacker” KICKED and the entire second set SLAMMED. The energy and synergy were dynamite. Mr. B was splendid on lead, and his “Haitian Divorce” made me wonder why he didn’t sing it in the first place. He place-tweaked “Slang” with “If you grew up in Washington…” And he gave us “Slang me!“ Mr. F’s voice and delivery were at their inimitable best. I just go all to pieces when he sings, “Give the man some whackin’ space” (among other things). He also did some amazing things on the Rhodes, the Lync, and even the Goofus, Mr.B’s fond moniker for the melodica (wind piano? Diamonica? Melodeon?), and is nonpareil as a bandleader. He’s starting to look kinda like Dave Brubeck, which is not a bad thing. Yeah, he misses a couple words. So what? There’s a lot of call and (audience) response going on anyway.
And the other musicians: Walt Weiskopf has great tone and chops; Michael Leonhart--calm and crisp and strong; Jim Pugh--all the trombone jokes burnt to a crisp in the flames of his riffs; Mr. Bumpus--that immovable exterior belies the perfection and grace of his solos; Jon Herington looks like a young Lou Reed and plays like an angel on aphrodisiacs; Tom Barney--he IS the pocket; and Keith Carlock--omigod, he is a DIAMOND. Even the superlatives of the Fandom didn’t prepare me. I can usually tell where a drum solo is going, but on “Josie” he deconstructed me like a Braque. I also think he’s superbly suited for the Dan with his precise but passionate creativity. And Ted Baker--I wanted to go up, take his hand, and ask him to play solo for me for 3 or 4 hours. I’d love to hear him ply his lyrical virtuosity as he did in the intro to “Josie” in ‘00.
OK, I miss Victoria Cave, and still think the vocal mesh of the Babe Choir ‘00 can’t be matched, but the BC delivered on “Parker’s Band,” and they were steady ON the entire show. “Shake it” went to a whole nother level. Fezo summed it up when he said that looking at Ms. Leonhart made him feel that all was right with the world.
Oh yes, and Mr. Fagen ended with "See you next time!" whatever that means.
Enough raves already. I’m home, richer by a few t-shirts and a poster and another headful of magnificent Steely memories. My shoes have even dried out. Thanks to Roy.Scam and fezo for hospitality and companionship, and the P’squeeze for driving 7 hours each way to chase this particular grail.
And say, anyone up for writing my boss that my grandmother is ailing and needs me to take care of her at Roseland 9/12-13?

Posted by: angel, Rajah: You are absolutely correct. Hoops is indeed in charge of this board and in that regard, I was way out of line. I apologize and hopefully won't bother you again. Carry on....
Gretchen: I listened to Royal Scam several times, at the point you refered to and yes, I do hear what you are talking about. I have no idea what does it, or what it is there for. I had been listening to EMG just before that and what a difference in the soundscape between those 2 albums. Royal Scam has a dark sound to it, that becomes even more apparent, when put up against EMG. Wow!

Posted by: hoops, What a great review, Eel.
My fav part:
"On this evening, the beauty of the music was augmented by the fact that the band was decidedly leaning toward playing heavily-jazz influenced versions of the songs in the Steely Dan canon. This definitely was not a show filled by carbon copies of their greatest hits. By focusing on and leaning heavily on freestyling arrangements (for the majority of the show), the audience was treated to a wonderful mix of jazz-funk soul. "
I wish I could be at Borgata. Sounds like it will be great. Having to work late and listening to the whole box set.

Posted by: Gretchen, Bill, the soap does have an interesting history, and according to the label, it can even be used for everything from housecleaning to shampoo. (I would not suggest that, though, and do not imbibe no matter how luscious the scent). There are several varieties, I've tried about all, and can reccommend only the original peppermint. The lavender scent is putrid, and the eucalyptis has a medicinal/chemical aura about it. The peppermint is very refreshing, particularly on a hot humid day. (Reserve for summer use only-extended use causes dry skin). Dr.Bronner must have been one wild ass character. Should be in a Steely song, mixing up soaps in his dank basement.

Gretchen, I had a girlfriend in the early 80's that was into that same soap. Your post brought back horrid memories. I especially remember the soap because it made areas that normally don't see the sunshine tingle in a most unusual and I seem to remember not completely pleasant manner.

Well...there's 13 in the band/ensemble alone, plus assorted crew & hangers-on. Can never have too many clean towels...
Many celebs/musicians (not counting Steely Dan in this stereotype) are so obsessed w/pampering themselves and stroking their egos, these lists of demands aren't surprising in the least. Wouldn't be surprised if the majority of what they all ask for is left behind, thrown away, etc.

Has anyone else heard this? What could they have used to produce that sound? I have RS on several different CD's and this appears on all, so it's not just the remastered edition. My guess is that it's supposed to be one of the beasts on top of the skyscrapers. Any thoughts?

One thing...The "Annandale" they sing about in "My Old School" is in New York State. Not Virginia.
Posted by: Bobbo, Virginia/DCGreat show at the Nissan Pavillon in the DC area last night! Amid one of the most outrageous lightning storms ever, the show went on and the crowd was great. Some seats went empty as a result of the weather... but the diehards who braved the ride out to Nisson were more than able to carry the load. My Old School absolutely brought down the house (Annandale is nearby) and FM closed the show. DF seemed to be having trouble with his voice, this could be an audio glitch or simply road weary. Becker did a great narrative tune and the intermission opened with a satrical piece by the band "pimping" their merch. T's went for $33. Fantastic vocals last night otherwise.

I'd say don't pay attention to those silly surveys but then I am the one who looks to see how many copies of EMG has sold this week. There's something about those sorts of things, you know it doesn't matter but it grabs you anyhow.
SueDave:
Yeah, "Blues Beach" has been getting a lot of airplay in the stores and I still hear "Janie Runaway" a lot too. I've heard "Blues Beach" most frequently, or so it seems, in Home Depot. They even have special lyrics:
"Grab Big Dog a blanket
Angel of my heart
Things may get a whole lot worse
Before suddenly falling apart
Give your roommate Yvonne a ring
Customer assistance is needed in aisle 15."
Queen Bayside, Shaun, others:
You're Damn straight you have to be at Roseland, LBB and all the rest of the event. Be there now!
YGK, others write:
"Just wanted to shout out a friendly post-Bacchanal hello to all those I was fortunate to meet at Bayside's" AMEN!

You are raising him right! I've never been to Saratoga, but wish I could make it. Anything in New England, Mid-Atlantic or Long Island would make the short list for me.
Molly:
I would be surprised if they didn't swap out at least a couple of tunes for part two in September.
PeterQ:
You know, I wasn't in the same place for the PNC and JB performances of "Janie." I wonder if that would affect my opinion of it.
Ed:
It was hot & muggy this morning in Chicago and now it's cool and dry. What da...what da is YGK talking about?
Bill, others:
Haven't heard "Jive Samba" but will seek it out. Thanks for the link.
RoseDarling (not Texas):
Are you the one who added "Rose Darling" to the Jewel-Osco play list about 8-9 years ago?
Joey:
Sounds exciting. I know I am in the minority but "Tatoo You" is my fav Stones album.
Big Fan:
Wow! What a collection of links
Sparkle, others:
I thought the MSFL versions were from before the latest round of SD CD masterings (ie from before 1998-2000 remasters.). I'm not so sure I'm nuts about that. MSFL went out of business but now is coming back. Very sad situation they were in. MSFL was owed a lot of money by a bankrupt music chain.. MSFL was owed so much money that it forced them out of business too. Now they are making a come back.
See you laters.

In response to the question from The Sparkle of Your china, Hong Kong:
You can find audiophile quality of SD albums at MobileFidelity.com.
They issued Katy, Aja and Gaucho on vinyl as well as gold ultradisc. The sound quality is supposed to be superior than that of the commercial release.
I have Aja by Mofi and it does sound "warmer" than the new release. That being said I cannot comment on the vinyl as I do not own a turntable but I do have Katy on vinyl.
Also, try EBAY for vintage vinyl and audiophile dan recordings.

Since I KNOW all of you fine individuals love and appreciate tremendous talent and/or prodigious musicianship , the legendary blues guitarist Mick Taylor ( Yes , THAT Mick Taylor formerly of the Rolling Stones , circa '69 - '74 ) is " rumored " to be performing on stage this evening with Jagger/Richards and company at a club gig in Great Britain . This marks only the second time in thirty years that Taylor has performed with the Stones since " leaving " the band .
Wow , me watching Steely Dan live in concert and now this all in three weeks time -- Oh Lord !

Posted by: Rose Darling, SeattleHi Everyone!
My, oh, my, I must say you all post the best damn mail in this room; I see that a few more people have posted their very first in the last couple of weeks, myself included.
SueDave! It's no accident that you heard Steely Dan in the grocery store...I put it there!
You see, I'm an audio designer for one of *those* companies that provides music for their businesses, so if you were in a Fred Meyer, QFC, Albertson's, etc., it's likely you heard one of my programs. Yes, I do realize I have a great gig here; getting paid pretty good dinero to listen to music all day, but there is form and function to it and it doesn't come without its politics. I just hope Don & Walt are getting the checks....hmmm....
It seems to me that some genius out there should hook up a live feed, so we can party with all you Eastcosters during the DanFests. I'm envious and can't go East right now, working on custom Holiday programs...what the f? Did she say "holiday"???? Ugh.
Keep up the great posts, love hearing about the DanFests and SD shows!
Enjoy yourselves!
Posted by: Peter Q, BrooklynBill, we posted alot here about Cannonball and albums like Live At The Blackhawk, Live at The Jazz Workshop, etc., and how Cannonball is exactly what Steely Dan means when they say "funk" (as opposed to, say, Bootsie Collins). That was in June. Glad you heard it too!
Posted by: Bill, again, PittsburghFor those not familiar with Jive Samba, there's a clip on this page:

I can't listen here at work (firewalls!) so I don't know if you can hear the Home at Last melodic fragment or not.
To me this is much more of a direct cop than the similar two-note intros to Rikki/Song for My Father.

I am listening to "Cannonball in Japan" by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. On the last track, "Jive Samba", there is a distinctive horn line that is damned near note for note the horn intro to "Home at Last"!!

I am taking my son (9) to Saratoga. He is wayyyyy into dan. Got all the cd's lined up in the changer for the ride (get him familiar with the stuff he hasn't heard yet) - He sings "things i miss" and has this whole dance routine that he does - so if u see a little boy in the 4th row dancing his ass off during that tune, thats spencer.

Another quick update on another expensive kiosk.
Firstly, Alan & I are extremely grateful to the extra ordinary lengths both Pete & Shari went to, to make us feel welcome at the Mohegan show. Thank you both for an incredible experience. We will never forget your generosity and friendship.
Now, to the rest of the bludgers in the Wreckless crew !!
Joe, LWO, Danfiend and Sam. Still surviving on 3 hours sleep a night and having a ball. You guys are priceless. Keep up the phone calls.
Sam, I spoke to the manager of the Battlefield Inn and the bar officially opens at 5pm today. I did manage to get him to agree on opening earlier if we get a few people turning up and the barman/women gets there prior to 5pm to serve us. A man is not a camel, you know.
Gretchen, it was great to hang out at Mohegan with you in that amazing waterfall bar.
Al & Jane Lightening, see you at Saratoga.
We won't bother saying anything about the actual shows here. Why even try to describe them ? Theses guys are just from another planet.
Lady Bayside, once again thank you so much for making us feel welcome and providing such a spectacular pre and post party. What a way to see our first show !
Steve & Sandy, thanks for the ticket upgrades. You made the night even more special.
Donald & Walter, if you read this, a big thank you goes out from 2 very humble Australians for providing years of pure delight and for touring this year. Please start planning your next tour immediately.
More from Saratoga if we can get online.
Cheers for now,
Scotty & Alan.
Posted by: Shaun, BostonLady Bayside- Sounds like you did a bang up job at the Jones Beach Danfest! I wish I could have made that show. Oh well...
I am soooo pumped for both Roseland shows! You're right....between the shows and the after-party at Le Bar Bat it's going to be AMAZING! When I was living in NYC I got to see Funkfilharmonik play. They're dynamite! It's actually the perfect band to play after the SD show. The have the jazz, the funk, the soul and the rock to make it a perfect seg-way! I'm even staying at the Novotel so I can be right there for the pre-party on Friday. Then we got Bernard Purdy on Saturday! This is going to be so much fun! If these two days are half as good as the Hall of Fame weekend it's going to be nuts! I think everyone around the country that's a big SD fan should try and make it in for these two shows! Come on people! Get of your butts and make it in to New York City on September 12th and 13th!!! You won't regret it.

Posted by: Lady Bayside, NYOkay, I think the general idea is that everyone needs to come to Roseland.
I guarantee Pete's Danfest will be phenomenal. How could it not? There's no tailgating in the parking lot (Roseland doesn't really have one, and it's highly unlikely we can shut down a city block) but we get to party at Le Bar Bat? With Funk Filharmonic? I'm not even going to Friday's how and I'll be at the after party!
I'll bring the roasted pepper and mozzarella salad. (that would be a great visual...me showing up with a bowl of stuff...) Penny needs to make more truffles. They were awesome.
Back to work.

Posted by: aunt faye, Long IslandTodd got the news...
The 17-year-old and her friend were hanging around doing some posters for their school club (Model Congress) last night. I popped in Disc 2 of Show Biz Kids so the kid (nice boy, very bright) could just get an idea of what I was ranting about. Well, an hour later, I realized they had moved on to Disc 1. Then Daniele asked me to explain about the "strange chords" her buddy Todd was hearing in the music...so I whipped out the old song book I have with Denny Dias' whole little mu major saga. I hadn't realized the friend was a keyboard player...the music started to really hit him!
Lady Bay, I think I am gonna make an appearance at Roseland...how could I NOT?!?!?! I ran out after the Jones Beach concert...it was such a wonderful experience I couldn't even talk to anyone. But the party was great and the people were mucho sympatico. Penny the Truffle Queen
Posted by: Big Fan, Back at work - bummerNice article in the Hartford Courant today about the Piano Jazz series with Marian McPartland. She's interviewing Nora Jones this weekeand at Tanglewood. Geez, I'll literally be going right past there Saturday morning coming back from Saratoga. Sorry you may need to register to view.
I wonder if they will ever issue a CD of the SD interview like they have of some of her many shows. One of the best SD interviews ever IMHO.

SueDave - I know you are going to the Roseland shows - it's not to late to come out for the Oakdale - but Hawaii sounds even better - have a great trip!!!!!
How's gas prices out there. I'm glad my SD driving tour is almost over - yikes I'm going to get hit hard driving to Saratoga this weekend. Had I known about the huge gas price increases would I have changed my plans - no. I was talking about future tours with someone in the know at the Danfest - they have been touring every 3-4 years - how old will Donald be in 3-4 years? Will he be willing to go on this kind of tour traveling from NH to PA back to CT in three days again? Their response was you'd better enjoy it while you can.

Cheers and hello from way back east. This is my first post here.I envy all of you seeing the band on tour. I saw SD in Osaka in 2000. No show has everything but it would make me especially happy to hear Big Black Cow and some of the other less frequently played songs. Does anyone know whether this tour is being filmed for a DVD concert release ?
And the main point here....who can guide me to high end SD recordings ? I have an awesome stereo but try as I might I cannot convince myself that Katy Lied sounds as good as it could. Aja has been released again by Universal as one of its 'enhanced' recordings..and it is an improvement on an already good remastered version. But most of the rest of the albums have only had that original remastering treatment. One exception is Gaucho, which I found about 8 years ago. It cost about $30 U.S. but has been worth every cent.
I don't want to have to buy surround speakers or other new gear. I have enough...just can't find the high end discs.

Posted by: suedave, 40 days and nights of sunBeen enjoying all your posts about all those shows back east. Wish I could have joined you at Mohegan in my home state. Sigh.
Congrats Lady Bayside for keeping the rain back. Here in Seattle, that's a sure sign of a powerful Queen :)
I can't take most of what's on the radio these days, so not hearing much SD on the radio well I guess that's just a little catch 22, isn't it. And CD sales are down, but we all hear SD in the grocery store, don't we? And it's great. Just the other night I heard What a Shame About Me while buying cream cheese & milk...I sang along and everything. And it also means that SD is played frequently, right? I think the only problem is that no one is announcing who is playing the music, but a clear sign that it is "sellable". No worries. Sometimes it just takes time.
So next time sing or hum along, maybe someone will ask you who is playing that great music.
See you in Roseland,
Susan

Be not ashamed of your Larry Coryell, George Benson, and (especially) Metheney. Although they are not cutting edge artists, bits and pieces are definetly laid back, chill out music. Coryell's "Angel on Sunset" and Benson's "Masquerade" are 2 favs of mine, cheesy or not. Late 70's fusion is a feast for the ears, but some of the middle of the road stuff can be pretty cool.

We can plan to meet around 6:30 or so? The show starts at 7:30. Or perhaps meet at 6, just to be safe. If you haven't seen the show yet, you are in for such a wonderful experience.
