Cosmic: Thanks for making me aware of the new RLJ album—didn't know it was out.

I have all these Grateful Dead live albums—and they keep putting out numerous live versions of these songs or I trade tapes to get different versions—each having it's own slightly different kind of magic. often of some of the same songs, multiple times. With that as an example, I think that's what RLJ is seeking here. Her last album, "It's Like This," was all live by herself. I think she's studying "polaroids" of her classic songs as grabbed at that instant. So I don't think it's weird. If anything, it's cool that she chose to revisit these particular songs. I tend to forget about things I don't like. I think this is her third version of "Horses," if I am not mistaken.

Happy New Year, if I don't make it back.

How do you figure RLJ re-recorded those Becker produced tracks? You make it sound like she's dissing WB. She recorded the songs *live* for a live album...right?

Ricky Lee Jones has a new live album out. SIX of its tracks are from Flying Cowboys including the one Becker co-wrote. Kinda weird that she would re-record 2/3 of an album, particularly the one Becker was so involved in, dontcha think?

Merriest Greetings to ALL.

I have a couple suggestions to further the tune that was begun earlier...

Here is what has been written, with my own added:

Pretzels Roasting on an open fire
Jack of Speed nipping at your nose.
Scurvy songs being sung by a choir
Bare-midriffed 'neath the mistletoe.

Every doctor knows
A Cuban Breeze with Cuervo Gold
Helps to make the season bright.

Dave: "Wu" and "Haitian Divorce" sound like cool choices for new back catalog items to be played live. How about Walter doing lead vocals on "Haitian Divorce?" I think it would be excellent! I can hear it, in a Walteronian voice, "This is your 'Haitian Divorce'."

It is indeed amazing to think, ten years since Rock and Soul Revue—and, shoot, I wasn't even aware of the New York Nights and Lone Star stuff until after it happened. That was even longer ago. Doesn't seem like it though.

My own humble take on the SD Newsletter is: You never know. On the one hand, we know they take their time; on the other, they never cease surprising me (finding out about NY Rock and Soul hours before the show or their touring in 1993 tour are just a couple examples. Being in love with Steely Dan is like being love with a beautiful woman—you keep playing that game of wondering and watching..."Will she come by? Or won't she?"

I've yet to experience 2VN DVD-A on a proper system. Just on my Mac’s DVD drive. Definitely not the way to experience it, as Keith pointed out.

Talking Heads in the Hall of Fame. It's really been 25 years since "TH '77"? First of all, I think TH were one of the bright spots of the 80s. Definitely in my top 10 of favorite artists. All their albums through "Stop Making Sense" and maybe even "Little Creatures,” were absolutely great in my book, often managing to walking a fine line between inventive and pretensions . But I think around the time of "Little Creatures" and definitely "True Stories," they became Frat Art Progressive and kinda a parody of themselves. Their formula became predictable. I think it was a natural progression that Byrne went off on his own. I could do without much of the Tom Tom Club.

I don't dig "The Sex Pistols" but somehow think they should have gotten in.

That "Christmas Song" lyrics thing...gotta think on that...the first four lines are great stuff.

Happy Gnu Year.

Posted by: Dave,

Hey everyone!

On the news last night, they were playing K.C. & The Sunshine Band's song that goes." Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight." While "The Fez" makes fun of a lot of dicso, hearing the K.C. song really made me wonder if it wasn't especially inspirational to Steely Dan in writing "The Fez."

"Dr. Wu" and "Haitian Divorce" are two songs not played before on tour that I would love to hear live. I bet the crowd would go nuts with the opening chords of "Haitian." I wonder if they would do a talk box thing on it?

It's also high time that they brought back "IGY" and "Chain Lightning." "IGY" live from '93 is better than the album.

My impression about the future from the Steely Dan newsletter is very mixed. Sounds like no album nor tour in 2002. But a tenth anniversary tour in 2003 would be amazing. Or would that be a 31st anniversary tour from '72? Speaking of which TEN YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! since Steely Dan started touring again. I can't believe it. I can't.

Posted by: Keith,

The Steely Dan Newsletter was a great gift to behold. There was that part where the Newsletter talks about new tracks. But then the part about how some tracks never see the light of day make me think that we won't have a new album in our hands until next Christmas. I'm placing my bets on 2003.

Who's this Lorraine Feather? Is she really an unknown heavyweight? Any one seen her?

I have played my TAN CD on my Dell Inspiron's DVD drive. It sounds much different at points, even though I just have the straight stereo. I'm sure this is how Donald and Roger and Walter DIDN'T expect it to be listened to. Someone said that one of the DVD-A/DTS TAN tracks contains an extra Chris Potter solo or segment. Is that right? Where?

Hoops and Oleander: When is your rock and roll hall of fame exhibit contest happening? We need to do something now that the holidays are over.

Cheers,

HoHoHo! 'Tis the season of giving. Hope you were able to participate as our family did.

As a grateful new receiver of a DVD system, I think I might be able with my limited experience to clear up a little controversy...

The Two Against Nature DVD-A contains BOTH stereo (2-channel) and 5.1 DTS!! Now, one must program your DVD-A upon insertion of said DVD-A to match your home audio system. This can be done easily through by using your TV monitor and up/down back/forward buttons. After the DVD-A loads, the main menu is displayed on your TV monitor. Options include playlist surround, playlist stereo, photo gallery (worth a look), also by Steely Dan, and project credits. I've noticed that for both DVD-As and DVD-Vs that are endowed with 5.1 DTS, the default setting seems to be the 5.1 (can't guarantee this is a standard though). So make sure you program your desired setting first. The stereo mode takes full advantage of the 192kHz sampling rate while the DTS 5.1 allows the surround sound at a sampling rate of 192 kHz/3 = 64 kHz, but with the surround experience. The extra dynamic range (160 dB vs. about 95 dB) and 3.36 times higher sampling rate than CDs in the stereo mode result in a much deeper, more detailed, and warmer sound than even the best CDS (read: Two Against Nature). The Immortal has done himself proud...Also the DVD-A is green, as planned, instead of the orange CD and once can gaze at the liner note photos for each song on the TV monitor as one listens to each selection...

The stockings are hung...Merry Christmas to all!

Ho Ho Ho Ho Ho!!!!

Merry Christmas, Hanukkah (ok, it just ended), Kwanzaa, <insert your favorite holiday here>!

All you Steely Dan fans are known for your impeccable taste in music, cars, romance and computers and more. A much smarter than average bunch.

But another thing I know about Steely Dan fans is that after they shell out those bucks, shillings, shekels, etc, for that new CD burner or BMW or latest DTS 5.1 remaster for themselves, they are also a generous bunch with a big heart.

But you guys are also a busy bunch.

So that's why I am stopping by to "tickle" you--to remind you about doing that generous deed you were going to do when you were thinking of those kids and people who don't even have food or clothes or simple trinkets gifts under the tree, assuming they can afford a tree, let alone a PowerBook Titanium, a DVD-A system, the latest SD remasters, etc.

Knowing you generous Steely Dan fans, you want to give but don't know how. In case you're stuck on some ideas, here's a few to get you started:

* Many large post-offices, especially like the main Post Offices in Manhattan and Downtown Chicago and L.A., have in their lobbies stacks of letters addressed to me (Santa) from kids who have very modest wishes for Christmas . I was looking at some of these letters this evening at a big urban post office--some of these kids just want boots or coats for Christmas so they can be warm. I need your help. Maybe you can get to such a Post Office or maybe you can find an equivalent organization in your area. Grab a letter and buy that kid their gift.

* More modestly, you could find out if your local public library has all of Steely Dan's CDs available for check out. If not, you could buy a fresh set or donate your older 1993 remasters. (Of course you better check first--some librarians may not want Steely Dan in their offerings in their library . Please send me their names and I will leave these evil sons-of-bitches and bastards a truck load of coal in their parking lot this holiday season. )

* Maybe you could take some time out from chatting on the BlueBook, SIS GB, alt group, Dandom Digest, etc, to help out at a local soup kitchen or other charity. Or go visit a nursing home. I bet you'll find at least one jazzer who was really around to experience Miles or Charlie Parker or Coltrane (etc) first hand rather than through the CD shop at Borders like many of us. I'm sure they'd love to talk about it --or maybe not, but who knows. I do know they'd like a visit. They could use your attention (rather than some of the anon dorks who show up in some SD Internet venues) and maybe you could turn them on to Steely Dan, if they aren't already. Remember 80 year-old Maggi McCoy?

Hopefully, these are just a few ideas to get you going.

Of course, all of us Steely Dan fans--Santa included--know the secret self-benefit behind this: There may not be a new album or current Steely Dan tour, but doing stuff like that suggested above can give you the same major equivalent buzz as experiencing Steely Dan live--spread the news!

Thanks for reading and to all and all the Dan Fans a good night.

Santa aka Hannah Klaus

Way back when in '93-'94, when next to noone had CD-RWs and the $600 drives wrote at 2X and made lots o'coasters , I got this really great custom CD, my first ever.

For Chritsmas, Dandom Digest pioneer/Hanna Klause, Hb Friendenberg, collected all of the miscillaneouse DF singles I owned into one CD, "Donald Fagen 'Alone At Last' " So every year around the holidays, I find I listen to it a lot and this year is no exception. I'm listening to it now and it's become my Steely Dan Christmas CD.+-

Track List:

I.G.Y. | Snowbound (Vocal/Bass/Drums Remix) | True Companion | Green Flower Street | Confide In Me | Shanghai Confidential | Tomorrow's Girls | Big Noise New York | Home At Last | New Frontier | Trans-Island Skyway (Vocal/Bass/Drums Remix) | Century's End

Still one of my favorite CDs. Thanks Hb!

more odd questions:

Does Becker sing any lead on "Turn That Heartbeat Over"? The liner notes say yes, but it just sounds like Fagen and Palmer to me.

Was "Bodhisattva" never released as a single? Why the hell not?

How high did "Peg" chart?

Where can I find a copy of the Woody Herman album that features a side of Dan tunes? What about the other instrumental jazz album of Dan tunes that came out in the 80s?

thanks in advance...

According to an article from Knight-Ridder Newspapers, Joe Walsh recently was given an honorary Doctorate of Music from Kent State. Says the article:

"It would be easy to mock Kent State's decision to honor Walsh, since----beyond technically being a drop-out-----the musician became famous for being one of the hardest partiers of the 1970s."

It talks about Walsh's charity efforts and then quotes:

"I didn't have a clue about life when I started College, except that I knew I was dumb," Walsh says. "But just the experience of going to College taught me the stuff I needed to do anything in life----you know, how to do my laundry, that sorta thing."

(The things that pass for knowledge I can't understand)

Says the chairwoman of the Kent State Citation Committee that selected Walsh, "a lot of people were trying to figure out where to go next. He just happened to pursue a career that didn't require a degree."

It also says that Walsh DID NOT get the degree because of a donation to Kent (he didn't make one) , that he now sports a soul patch, and that the tribute to Walsh was not concert like for Steely Dan last spring at Berklee, but a rap led by the Provost made up of lyrics from Walsh's songs. Apparently this was the only time he smiled . He remained serious the rest of the time.

Then the bombshell: He announced that the Eagles are making a new album in California. They started recording two months ago and plan release for 2002. It's an album inspired by Henley's "support good music campaign" started with his last solo album. Eagles? Good Music? Good God!

If Steely Dan gets their album together for 2002, it looks like the Dan and The Eagles will go head to head again on the charts.

Hay Hoopsie-here's one that made me think of you.

Apparently after an extensive front cover article on one Mr. Elton John in the September issue of Uncut magazine, a certain Mr Fagan took exception to so much coverage being given to Mr. John. This Mr. Fagan must have told the letters page last month . Unfortunately I don't have that letter but you can guess the tone from a letter in THIS month's issue, submitted by one Mr Taupin of Roundup Valley ,California .

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"A friend with a relatively keen sense of humour forwarded a letter published in your paper/magazine-forgive me I`m not familiar with what you are exactly."

I`m presuming you did a piece recently on my partner that a Mr Fagan took offence to. While he is totally entitled to his opinion' he sells us short----We have in fact been churning out crap for close to 34 years.

Speaking of Purdie, this is a few months old. I came across an article in the 5/11/01Christian Science Monitor about Laura Nyro's posthumous album, Angel In The Dark. Apparently, it's a jazz album and it features Purdie along with the Brecker Bros. The writer likes the album since Laura makes her voicings like Miles Davis' trumpet.

I am pleased that Talking Heads got in. David Byrne and the rest of the band have had a less than happy separation, with Byrne suing the other band members when they tried to tour as Talking Heads without him. I wonder if they will make nice.

I wonder how come Elvis Costello didn't get in?

By for now.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees for 2002 have been named.

Talking Heads

The Ramones

(but no Sex Pistols)

Isaac Hayes

Brenda Lee

Gene Pitney

and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

Non-Musician Jim Stuart of "Stuart (not Stewart)" Fame. Also founded Stax Records

Sideman-surprise (not a suprise)! The Late Chet Atkins. Nothing like waiting until they're dead to let'em in so they can enjoy the cup of spumone ice cream at the banquet desert. Is George Harrison in as a solo artist yet? If not, perhaps he didn't die in time. Still, Wenner is racking up the bucks with the special Rolling Stone issue devoted to Harrison only at Newstands.

Well, this is the first year the punkers can get in, the anti-Dans. Leave it to Yawn Wenner to let in two New York punk bands but no Sex Pistols. Assuming punk should be recognized.

But how come Yes isn't in? Or as I call them, "Yeth." Or are they? I'M SO CONFUSEDDD!!!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on first try? HUH?????? And then it took Bowie multiple times. Sheeeeeeshhhhhollllla!!!! At www.rockhall.com , they decribe Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as "him" and "he" Like referring to Donald Fagen as Steely Dan. Tom Petty and The HB are OK but not first round entrants by any stretch.

Speaking of which, do you think Donald Fagen will be admitted as a solo artist in 2007 or Becker in 2019?

Why does Wenner show up to name the inuctees with babes at his side when we know he's gay?

Ho Ho Ho! Where's my Ho!?!

O.K. First of all,Im not a true Dan fan, but my buddy and I have recently "rediscovered" the now legendary Aniton 7/74 intro to Bhodissatvah, which EVERYONE thinks is mere incoherent rambling BUT IT IS NOT !!!! It is a complete rail against studio drumer Bernie "pretty" Purdie (you can tell the little ole "pretty" one that he missed out ) The drummer in concert,Jim Hodder, IS "Mr. Whatever" ,who IS here tonight. Aniton naturally doesn't know HIS name because at the time Purdie was their primary drummer and the late Jim Hodder was a relative unknown. Mr. Whatever (i.e. "the magnificent one" "the one and only one") gets exaggerated praise("he gonna get down tonight " "he gonna get widdit"),as the little ole "Purdie" one is being lightly mocked for not playing live.......With each reference to all this,Hodder plays little drum riffs to indicate his agreement,as a musical"response" to Aniton......This whole interpretation is CRYSTAL clear, when Aniton says Mr. Steely Dan AND whatever (read:Hodder) There are all kind of other references too(for example,we have reason to believe Purdie lived in Watts at the time). If you have any interest in helping me explore this such as helping me contact any of the principals(Aniton,Purdie,or even Fagen/Becker) please let me know.

Hoops, you are right on the money with the "choosing between your kids" observation. For me, Royal Scam was "first" (to that point my only contact with the Dan had been the singles, Do It Again, Reelin and Black Friday) and so I will always rank it first. A few months back there was a "what's your least favorite song" thread and what was striking is how difficult it is for people to come up with candidates (and how few candidates there are). Everyone knows that Floyd holds a very high spot among my favorite bands. But one thing's for sure -- there are plenty of candidates for least favorite Floyd song. So for depth of quality, the Dan wins out even over my beloved Floyd. 3rd place goes to Romeo Void

Yadda, Rod is a has been whose hits have been force-grown by his label for at least 15 years or more.

Anita belongs a smaller label like Concord. I thought she was on Elektra, though.

Tori "Do It Again" Amos and Sinead would be better off on a smaller indy label.

Maybe The Dan are due for a label switch but would they need a big label to bankroll their records?

B-52's? Tough call. Maybe a little too camp-and dare I say it-gay for our guys.

Hi

A bonus with the DVD-A of TAN Nature is that the artwork is about 20% bigger. It may play on any DVD player but it sounds weird at points if you don't have surrround. Was TAN ever out officially on Vinyl? I thought the ODP said there was a boot of TAN on vinyl but it was inferior. Not based on the LP master they made.

* Regarding George Harrison: I *still* see daily features on him in the media. Sure, not as much attention as when Lennon died, but then Harrison's illness has been discussed for three years. Not as shocking as Lennon's murder, although the person who argued that Harrison was murdered by tobacco has a point to argue. Also, let's face it, John and Paul were much more prolific as songwriters for the band. Keith Richards says he and Harrison shared a camaraderie since they both played similar roles in their respective bands, carrying their band in some major ways, yet also finding themselves placed a half-step behind the front line. Above all else, given his private nature, I think George Harrison is sort of glad not to be getting as much attention upon his death. The chanting at the end of "Surf and/or Die" is probably the "Pretzel Logic" best suited to Harrison's passing.

* I love all the Steely Dan albums, and those are some excellent points about "The Royal Scam," but "Katy Lied" edges out as my favorite. It's like picking your favorite kid, if you ask me: you love them all, but maybe, embarrassingly enough, one sticks out. Fortunately, the other albums won't have hurt feelings.

* As far as a Steely Dan cover album of Jazz Standards, how about Becker and Fagen tribute Duke Ellington. Between what Becker and Beasley's "Mose The Fireman" and Fagen's comments in November "Mojo" and then "East St. Louis Toodel-OO," I think it would be a great CD. (Hey, my cat's named after Duke.)

* Great site, GypsyQueenInAFairyTale! Keep it up!

http://home.talkcity.com/picassopl/gypsypoetess/poems.html

* I talked about the various Steely Dan guitarists thing in the Dandom Digest in mid-July 2000. In a nutshell, the five 90s touring guitarists (including Walter) have all been the right guitarist at the right time, even though each is vastly different. Last summer, for where Walter wanted to play, Jon was perfect as Walter's complement as well as foil.

* The TEC awards must have been something. I think those are the kind of honors I love to see D + W get most of all, since they truly seem to go to a deeper level of appreciation of Walter and Donald REALLY DO so much better than anyone else.

* The Plush video/PBS show didn't air where I was living (East Central Illinois, Univ. of Illinois Public TV WILL 12) until three months later. I'm glad WNET 13 took an interest and premiered. Who knows for sure their motives. Just glad they did it. In Chicago, WTTW Channel 11 aired it a day or so after WNET and the people there were so into they 1) aired a condensed version of highlights immediately after the first full showing for a 2.5 hour presentation; 2) they also had those taking pledges discussing how much they loved Steely Dan, and, god help us, would sing Steely Dan songs followed by a their dancing around the studio to Steely Dan music. I did subsequently get to confront the downstate Illinois WILL 12 program director when we both ended up on a University committee. It was great to embarrass him ;-), and oddly enough, we've become friends.

* With Letterman having just wrapped up his campaign to be on "Oprah," you gotta wonder what it would be like for Becker and Fagen to be on "Oprah." I can see them in chef's aprons, sauteeing or something.

Thanks for listening/reading.

Hey, Happy Hanukkah...

Thanks to all of those who have been sending emails. It's a been a whirlwind of a semester, dropping in in the middle of things so 'scuse me for not replying as promptly as I should.

Some people have asked about the bluebook and what will happen with the recent changes at the Sign In Stranger (SIS) guestbook. Many of you will recall, that this place was started as an experiment to see how an SD guestbook might be lightly moderated and in part as a reaction to some nasty behavior at the SIS GB and even elsewhere. Again, moderation for me is not so much saying posts are naughty or off limits, but mostly about the hosts and regulars offering positive discussion. Sometimes, it even means ignoring some things. In actuality, only about three or four posts have been modified here since August and in all cases, the poster has been contacted to discuss it. I do this since I'm not above missing the point of some things. You will also remember, that the bluebook experiment was started at the request of several others who wanted an alternative to the several SD discussion communities out there. I wouldn't do this on my own and it was a reason I thought it important not to post too much, lest I dominate things.

Before I start a new SD Internet feature, I do make some attempts to seek out and contact St. Al, as well as others, who might be working on something similar. I won't go into all the reasons, but a lot has to do with trying to be a good neighbor. Given what I see in other music Internet cultures, I know we are lucky to have going what we all have going. I guess that is a reflection of the kind of fans the Dan attract. Although I may contact Pat and others, ultimately, I host things like this because at least some of the Dandom want and/or appreciate them.

So with the recent changes at the SIS GB, I successfully reached Pat by phone over two weeks ago to see what his view on the Steely Dan Fan GB scene was. His reaction was supportive of-and insistent that-the bluebook continue. But regardless of what he or I may think, as long as people want to post, this place will stay, as long as it's useful; it seems it has its niche a place that stays more focussed on music-related and Dan-related topics. Some of things and contributors I expected last June never appeared; on the other hand, it turned out much better than I personally expected.

A couple of questions have come up. There have been some requests for permitting HTML tags. Right now, you have to ask me to add them as one poster can screw up the formatting of the GB if they don't know what they are doing. There'll be an experiment with add your own HTML tags and links as you post in a week or two. We'll see how it goes.

Another question that has come up is whether or not I keep tabs on exactly who posts, what browser they use, etc. I really don't do this, don't have time to go through the logs, etc.

So thanks for your inquiries, your interest and support.

Tom's brother, Mats, also made a MIDI of Big Noise New York. Check it out!

BIG NOISE, NEW YORK

Since you left me darlin'
The city doesn't feel right
On the street the music stopped
And the light seem half as bright
Without your love
This old town's no fun at all
Without your love
I only hear the loudest voices
The one's with something new to sell
And now it's all
Big talk, big name, big noise, New York

I walk from the river to West Broadway
Every stranger spoke your name
Every sign read 'yesterday'
Without your love
This old town's no fun at all
Without your love
I only see the drifting shadows
Of the losers and the lost
And now it's all
Big talk, big name, big noise, New York

There was a time
When the night was just for dancing
'til the sun rose over the skyline
But now you're gone
And the fear of winter grows
Just a place where the money flows
And there never was a springtime

Another season begins fast and loud
It's supposed to be a party
But to me, it's just a crowd
Without your love
I'm left with all the memories darlin'
Of words I thought were true
But it was all
Big talk, big name, big noise, New York
Well, it was all
Big talk, big name, big noise, New York

Re: approaching the Dan from a guitar hero perspective. That's why, for my money, Royal Scam is the best Dan Lp -- it echoes the Dan past with the blazing guitars while previewing the upcoming jazz takeover. Info on Tribute the Movie in NY:

Dear NEW YORKers -- "Tribute" -- a documentary on tribute bands -- is coming to New York this Wednesday for a free screening! Although the film does not mention Which One's Pink? or The Steely Damned, its a very funny film telling the very human stories of fans, some of whom happen to be in tribute bands, who refuse to give up their passion for music (I know that the people receiving this fall into that category). The film focuses on five tribute bands -- Sheer Heart Attack, a Queen tribute from Los Angeles, The Missing Links, a Monkees tribute from Los Angeles, Larger than Life, a KISS tribute from Modesto, Bloodstone, a Judas Priest tribute from Albany, and Escape, a Journey tribute from Los Angeles. Even if you hate the music these bands pay tribute to, the stories are humorous and universal speaking to interband warfare, breakups, auditioning prospective band members, playing the music "like the record" etc. So, if you are interested, the information on the screening is reproduced below

TRIBUTE will screen in New York this Wednesday, December 12, 2001, and there are a small number of seats available to the public. This will be the first opportunity for East Coast TRIBUTE fans to get a sneak peek! TRIBUTE at the Disney Screening Room Wed., Dec. 12th, at 1 PM (...what's better than popcorn for lunch?!) 500 Park Ave., Lobby Level (Midtown -- Park Ave. & 59th St.) Admission is free, but you must RSVP by email with your name and a daytime phone number to kris@tributethemovie.com

What you probably heard was Sony's SACD player. This is Sony's standard. In the opposite ring, we have DVD-A or Digital Versatile Disc Audio which Warner wants to win. So Sony is releasing their titles as SACD and and Warner is releasing their titles as DVD-A. Universal has come out in support of Sony's standard. The bridge between them all is DTS 5.1 which is a second format on these discs but doesn't have all the features that the other two have. Elliott Scheiner (spelling?) and Roger Nichols apparently prefer DVD-A over SACD. But I suspect Universal will release the MCA stuff on SACD and Warners will release the Fagen, Becker, and ALIVE IN AMERICA and TAN on DVD-A. Speaking of releases, any word on the next album?

A few noteworthy bits o' info...

I saw at Best Buy yesterday that they had copies of Gaucho and 2VN in DTS format. Unfortunately, I do not have them, as my wife purchased both already and told me that I would have to wait until Dec 25th ( groan ). I was aware that Gaucho was released, but not 2VN. Anybody heard 2VN in DTS? I'm sure it sounds great.

Also, I noticed as well that there is a new cd player out called a "Super CD player" (?). It only plays CD's that have been recorded in the "super" format. Conventional CD's will not work.

Supposedly, the sound is superb and even more clear than standard CD's. I listened to "The Stranger" by Billy Joel that they had in the player, and I must admit, it sounded great.

They had a few CD's available... Miles Davis, Billy Joel, James Taylor, etc... but no Dan. Retail was about $19.00 per CD and the player was around $300.

Wondering if the Dan will soon release any or all of their discs in this new format.

To all my fellow Dan friends, Merry Xmas...

A lot of those stations that play Steely Dan play "Do It Again," "Reelin'" and "Rikki." Usually they are those Guitar Hero, album-oriented stations that also play Genesis and Floyd. That is one direction to approach Steely Dan. The Denny and Skunk years.

But they miss the point of Fagen and Becker.

There's so many ways to view Steely Dan. There are those who view them as Classic Rockers. As Jazz-Rockers, Art Rockers, Satirists and even Muzak, not to mention jaz. Pretty astounding to consider that this was based on only 7 (count'em) albums.

Maybe Manheim Steam Roller will do "Snowbound." Gawd Halp uS! Four Play's version is pretty good. David Bowie on "Bodhisattva" could be clever.

Today's New York Times has a nice set of articles on Coltrane at 75. It's in the Weekend/Performing Arts pages. Don't agree with all of it but it is good reading.

One funny part is when the writer makes a joke about people studying the significance of Coltrane's birthday being on the cusp of Virgo and Libra.

Might be found on line.

Mudhisatva,

I think that Harrison's death has been forgotten so quickly in the media and radio for one simple reason: they can't make money off of it. If it were a musician that had umpteen Top 10 hits, they could do tribute after tribute, rerelease after rerelease. Since Harrison seemed to be the weakest link in the Beatles (Ringo a tie or very close second), I think he's given the least credit for their success.

Not to mention that his death, although unfortunate, was not what I would call tragic. It was not a surprise. They could play Selena's death because she was so young, as was Kurt Cobain, Aaliyah, etc.

Bottom line is the bottom line. If radio/TV can't profit from his death, then they will not dwell on it any longer than necessary.

I'm sorry if this is trivializing death, because I hate to do so. But that's the way the music business is perceived. When Britney Spears no longer makes the recording industry any money, they will drop her like a hot potato. As Justin Wilson once said, "Gaaaronteed!"

My Tour guitarist favorites in order are:

Jon H. - most versatile,"accurate", just has it all

Drew Z. - cranks! Best Green Earrings and Pretzel Logic solos!

George W. - did the job respectably and consistently

Wayne K. - great guy !

I didn't used to appreciate Drew as much until after comparing with George and Wayne after '96. The concert tapes tell the story though. Drew could certainly be accused of "showboating" or being too dominant on stage, but he was tight and coherent. Wayne had great stage personality(big smile all the time), but just wasn't consistent and was often outright incoherent. George just did what he was told, but did it well if not a little dull sometimes, but nothing wrong with that approach when playing alongside WB and DF.

Will Walter ever do another solo album? I heard Donald was.

I never noticed that about Satan/Santa. Where are the holy rollers when you need them?

Less than a week later, George Harrison is out of the news. Was it that his death was not a surprise, that the Beetles are too long ago? That John's was such a surprise? Or that George didn't mean as much to people. He was truly a man of peace.

Santa! I never knew you could be so mean! Did you ever notice that if you rearrange the letters in Santa you get Satan?

I Dave, I thought Wayne was great in 1996, but my favorite was Drew Zingg in 1993.

Santa Claus came in late last night, drunk on Christmas wine. Fell down hard in the driveway, hung his bag out on the laundry line. There's a Cobra Gunship for his golden boy and there's a Hello Kitty for his pride and joy .

Looks like Santa's decommissioned. When someone sent me these, I got this feeling Donnie and Wally are filling in for Mr. Claus. I dunno-at least it vaguely reminded me of the responses I got at the Steely Dan Mailbag.

**************************

Dear Santa,

I've written you for three years now asking for a fire truck. Please, I really, really want a fire truck this year!

Love,

Kenny

-----

Dear Kenny,

Let me make it up to you. Christmas Eve, while you sleep, I'm gonna torch your house. You'll have more fire trucks than you'll know what to do with.

Santa

****************************************************************

Dear Santa,

I don't know if you can do this, but for Christmas, I'd like for my mommy and daddy to get back together. Please see what you can do.

Love,

Teddy

-----

Dear Teddy,

What, and ruin that hot affair your dad's still having with the baby-sitter? He's banging her like a screen door in a hurricane, son! Let me get you some nice Lego's instead.

Santa

******************************************************************

Dear Santa,

I left milk and cookies for you under the tree, and I left carrots for your reindeer outside the back door.

Love,

Susan

-----

Dear Susan,

Milk gives me the shits and carrots make the deer fart in my face. You want to be a kiss-ass? Leave me a glass of Chivas Regal and a nice Cuban cigar.

Santa

*******************************************************************

Dear Santa,

I really, really want a puppy this year.

Please, please, please, PLEASE.

Jimmy

-----

Jimmy,

That whiney-beggy shit may work with your folks, but that crap doesn't work up here.

You're getting another sweater.

Santa

****************************************************************

Dear Santa,

What do you do the other 364 days of the year? Are you making toys?

Your friend,

Thomas

-----

Dear Thomas,

All toys get made in China. I have a condo in Vegas, where I spend most my time squeezing cocktail waitresses asses, and losing all my cash at the craps table.

Hey, YOU wanted to know!

Santa

Dear Santa,

I wud like a kool toy space ranjur for Xmas. Ivben a good boy all yeer.

Dear Billy,

Nice spelling.

You're on your way to being a career lawn care specialist. How 'bout I send you a fucking book so you can learn to read and write?

I'm giving your older brother the space ranger; at least HE can spel!

Dear Santa,

I need more Pokemon cards please! All my friends have more Pokemon cards than me.

Please see what you can do.

Dear Michelle,

It blows my fucking mind. Kids are forcing their parents to buy hundreds of dollars worth of these stupid cards, and none of you are even learning to play the game.

Let me get you something more your speed, like 'Chutes and Ladders'."

Santa

Dear Santa,

I want a new bike, Playstation, a train, some GI Joe's, a dog, a drum kit, a pony and a tuba.

Dear Jessica,

You are that gullible? Good luck in whatever you do, I’m skipping your house.

Santa

********************************************************************

Dear Santa,

We don't have a chimney in our house, how do you get into our home?

Love,

Marky

-----

Mark,

First, stop calling yourself "Marky"; that's why you're getting your ass whipped at school.

Secondly, you don't live in a house, that's a trailer you're living in.

Thirdly, I get inside your pad just like all the burglars do, through your bedroom window.

Sweet Dreams!

Dear Santa,

I have been a good girl all year, and the only thing I ask for is peace and joy in the world for everybody!

Dave... If you're talking about the fadeouts to Glamour Profession, Green Earrings, Kid Charlemagne and My Old School, I heard them at the Nissan Pavilion show from '96 and thought those are some of the most awesome SD guitar solos from all of their compiled work. Especially the end of Green Earrings had my jaw dropping in amazement.

Was listening to Shoreline 96 and it really hit me how over the top Wayne Krantz was as Steely Dan guitarist. The last few minutes sound like he's going to blast-off and explode. Dug Drew, dug Jon. Wayne's a great player but wasn't a match.

Thoughts?

Channel 13 will get my $$$$. More than a few PBS stations wouldn't first-run the PBS show until the following June. These rascally stations thought the Dan special would not generate enough pledges during March pledge week. So yeah, Grinch/whatevah: they were cool in a Dan like way.

Posted by: Whatevah happens,

Oh sure. You run a Steely Dan video special once a year, only DURING THE TIME YOU ARE RAISING MONEY, and the rest of the year you run programming so boring it puts everyone to sleep, and now you want to say you are SD-friendly, so we can send you more money. Right. Gotcha. The check's in the mail pal. It's too bad about your antenna, but maybe the wealthy people who enjoy your classical music specials, which RUN ALL THE TIME, can help you out there. Good luck and happy holidays.

WNET, Channel 13 New York was one of the co-sponsors of Steely Dan's PBS special and Plush DVD. With the World Trade Center went 13's antennae. They're back on cable and with some signal from a top the Empire State Building. Since they are a public station, they need money to get full power back. dave - that's a great list - i would throw in some brubeck, perhaps something from "jazz impressions of new york" a personal favorite

and speaking of brubeck, i have often thought that the title track 2vN sounds nicely like "blue rondo ala turk" in its movement, but i would love one of the musicians in here to take a look at that for me - does anyone else feel that way? it's just the feel of the tune makes me think of that brubeck classic

Posted by: Dave,

I really dig Steely Dan's version of "East St. Louis Toodel-ooo." There's Fagen's contribution to the Monk tribute in the 80's. So it got me thinking what if Steely Dan decided to do a whole cover album of Jazz classics.

Here's a few ideas:

"Sweet Georgia Brown"

"Stardust"

"Three Views to A Secret"

"Flamenco Sketches"

"Giant Steps"

"Take The 'A' Train"

"Ruby My Dear"

"Fever"

"I Cover The Waterfront"

"Goodbye Pork Pie Hat"

They could make a whole new career out of reinterpretations, assuming they wanted to.

The Beatles helped paved the way for popular musicians to have a much greater say in the music they made. Not that the labels didn't wield huge influence afterwords. Just not as much. Before The Beatles, many popular artists had next to no say in what their record companies wanted them to record. Also, The Beatles, along with Bob Dylan, helped to promote the idea of singer/songwriters. DF/WB were, on the other hand, coming in at the tail-end of the Brill Building scene. The Beatles had minimal impact on the Steely Dan sound. Had The Beatles not come around, I'm sure Becker and Fagen would have still made it as jazzmeisters where there was already more creative freedom. Miles and Coltrane already enjoyed some creative freedom before The Beatles. Really, it's the jazzers and the 60s rhythm, blues and soul artists who Steely Dan owe their greatest debts to. Them and Dylan, since Dylan made it OK to tell stories in songs. Then there were some songs like The Ballad of John and Yoko which was great satire. Fagen says that was one of his favorite songs in the 60s. Happy to see Donald and Walter receive the Les Paul Award. Did anyone notice how happy Larry Carlton looked in those photos? I wonder if Carlton is in New York City recording with Donald and Walter. Is there any word on how the new album is coming? Do you think they will tour in 2002? Maybe with the war, they will take their time in 2002 and see how it all falls out.

Great K.D.!

I know the TEC awards were delayed because of 9/11 but are there plans for these to be telecast? I'm awed to see DF and WB accepting an award from Les Paul. See? even Steely Dan ask for autographs!

Was reading that George was trying to write "Something" like a Ray Charles song. Amazing how Ray has influenced everyone including Fagen and the Beatles. When he goes, it will be tough. I was always impressed how "The Finer Things" follows Ray's "Come Rain or Come Shine" on the "King of Comedy" soundtrack. Sad to lose these greats and sadder that there are not as many new greats. Hope it's a long time before we lose any more like George.

I offer this--with Don and Walt being such literary scholars, I see flashes of Dickenson like in Charlie Freak.

Also--Does Dinky Dawson count?

Finally--the Brits LOVE Steely Dan.

But yeah, probably would still be a Steely Dan without the Brit invasion.

I thougt I read in Rolling Stone or something that Walter's mother was British. I guess that would be a big Brit influence. You think?

Which makes me wonder. Why wasn't Haitian Diviorice a massive hit across the pond in the States like it was here in GB?

I think the Beatles' influence on Steely Dan was indirect (besides the sitar stuff). Rock could be expansive, could integrate many styles, and could be an art form. However, to be honest I can't hear from a musical standpoint much influence of the British invasion in their music. I can hear Ellington, bop, Stax, Motown, Gamble and Huff, and Bob Dylan, but not the Beatles...
