Swinger - quality according to WHO?? Who gets to define quality? I was having a bit of fun with an otherwise assinine question. The answer was easy from any number of levels. Quite simply - all it takes is to A - love Steely Dan and B - love Pink Floyd.

Yes, Mu, the Arabian scale that Donald calls upon so often like in Greenbook...it really is the place he got all that Aja stuff from. A major influence in his compositions. There's a strong Far East influence in Steely Dan. The axis is NYC-LA-Far East.

H-Gang is tied for First in Most Added and Second in Most Increased Plays in the Triple A Format. If this trend continues, H-Gang hould be in the Top 30 next week in the Triple A format.

A friend of mine showed me the so-called Master CD release of Aja and in looking over the notes included, a reviewer referred to Deacon Blues as an Edge City Ballad. Can anyone shed any light on what he meant? Other than that the notes were pretty insignificant and not all that positive. I did not get a chance to hear it and compare it to the re-mastered release.

Hey Bluebook. Haven't been here in awhile, but have been jarred to life with the impending tour by DF and crew. Ordered my tix for the Tower outside of Philly. As far as I know, WXPN's the only station in the Philly area playing H Gang. Heard it this morning ~6 AM. Really looking forward to March.

New York area Dandom with a little time on their hands might do some reporting, eh ?

The bass line on "Haitian divorce" is so smooth and cool, almost conversational.
Dean Parks should have been allowed to finish his solo in the end.
Not a voice box but a Becker synth embellishment, genius!
Bring back this Steely Dan phase and I will be happier than a pig in slop.
By the way, college boy, Stern can't be the best electric guitarist as long as McLaughlin and Holdsworth are alive.

Heard "H-Gang" proper today after the office....

Just listened to ROYAL SCAM with the subwoofer turned WAY up. That album has got to have THE BEST bass useage of any album I have ever listened to. "The Fez" is my fav. "Haitian Divorce" is awesome. "Everything You Did" is also great.
I think the amazingness comes from its simplicity. Nothing complicated going on, just takes the role of the perfect back up to the melody and harmony of each track. I love it.

Alkali - I snagged "Voices" not too long after it was released. That one also features Richard Bona - who I had never heard of until I saw him perform with Metheny on the "Speaking Of Now" tour. What an incredible talent! He's like a musical swiss army knife.

So, was this a Steps Ahead concert you saw or a Mike Stern concert? Steve Smith has such an amazing mastery of the drumkit. Absolutely love watching him play! It's technical wizardry at it's finest. I used to love his band Vital Information, but I hate the new direction they went in around 5 years ago or so.

and in other news...Jeff Young was supposed to play Ghengis Cohen, this little kosher Chinese restaurant in the Faifax district on Saturday night but ws cancelled. I'd say reheasals may have commenced. Your job, Dandom, should you choose to accept it, is to discover where the Donald Fagen Band is rehearsing somewhere in the City.

David Gilmour is great at playing David Gilmour. He played with McCartney a few years ago at the New Cavern Club in Liverpool, remember this, it was on cable and he stunk up the joint playing old Beatles tunes. Course Paul's voice gave out on him part way through and he couldn't find the right key, pitch or tone. Fiasco. I never thought Paul could remediate his pipes the way he has lately...which gives me hope for Donald. 20 shows in 31 days? You know he's gotta be in better shape than the EMG Tour to pull this off.

Josey, the drummer was Steve Smith.
The real treat was Manieri the vibraphonist. He was amazing.
C,The way upC. yes, yes, yes! Such a great composition.
I love Metheny. ThereC-s something very raw and garage band like about his band.
At the festival I also had the privilege of seeing Brubeck again. Great.
The only bad part of the concert was that it was hotter that hell that weekend.
Had a great time anyway, my wife was never a Stern fan until she saw him live.

SternC-s C,VoicesC. record is wild. This is the one with Caliuto on drums and Herington on rhythm.

Fittest, that's an explanation I can handle. Indeed, Gilmour said himself after the Momentary Lapse album was released:
"I simply thought, 'Are these songs good?' and worked on trying to make the ones I thought were good into a record. It can not help sounding quite a bit like Pink Floyd if it's got my voice and my guitar playing on it anyway."
Gilmour was never the best writer, I like his work, but that Waters/Gilmour combination was near perfection. Pink Floyd went down hill when the two started to seperate, when Waters decided it was "his" band and they would do it his way">starting with ANIMALS), and then of course when Waters left after THE FINAL CUT and the Pink Floyd moniker basically became Gilmour's pet project.
Nonetheless, I'll be buying Gilmour's solo album on March 6. Even though the last two "Pink Floyd" albums may not have been up to the DSOTM or WYWH standard, I love them anyway. I play THE DIVISION BELL more often then CAN'T BUY A THRILL.


What's the deal with January?? There's still two days left in this wretched month!!

Re: the David Gilmour discussion - I don't know about how technically proficient he is at the guitar because I'm not a guitarist. But I love the sound he gets from a guitar about as much as any other guitarist I listen to! I think he has a great knack for getting as much out of just a few simple notes as anyone.

I saw the Division Bell tour in Atlanta and it was, without question, the best concert I had ever seen before or since. I couldn't listen to anyone else for a week after that show. I didn't miss Roger Waters at all!

Although I dig his phrasing, he's not a technical player.
HeC-s an average guitarist, say in the Clapton, Page, and Lifeson league.
The Stern and Metheny comparison is interesting; I caught stern last year in Saratoga Springs, like him allot. Metheny has much more to say and his musical spectrum is wide, wider than most.

Morph the cat in the year of the dog, Fagen's drawn to that Oriental philosophical express like a white moth to a yellow flame.
I think it's all planned out. The irony, the coincidence and metaphor.
He probably doesn't sleep much; daydreaming up complex mental weaves to keep him amused and then unleashes and mixes it onto record.

Let the trilogy resolve...

Nice drumming on H-gang by Carlock within Donalds minimalistc drum approach. Listen to the snaredrum right after "ready to make a big noise" SNAP. It sounds a lot sharper than the other snaredrum beats. My point? Dunno... just an observation I guess... Maybe a marking of the "big noise", maybe just evidence of live drumming.

The more I listen to H-Gang the more I like it. What a nice song.

You know, in a way I think Donald has created his own genre. Nobody writes a song like Donald Fagen. They say that Elvis was the King of Rock & Roll, and that's true I guess, but what about Donald Fagen? What is he the King of? If I had to categorize Donald's solo songwriting I'd call it... Breezy. Donald writes very "breezy" music. So I guess that would make Donald "The King of Breeze".

Now what is "Breeze"? Hmm... good question. I guess you take some lite rock, some jazz, some of the better pop music of the last 40 years, mix it all together in a sophisticated way and you've got "Breeze". And you've also got a new musical genre. And you've also got the legacy of one Donald Jay Fagen.

I'm looking forward to more "crunchy" guitar on Morph. H-Gang is a nice start. Mike Stern's an interesting topic that's come up. He sounds like Pat Metheny playing the piano of that makes sense...keyboard like runs. The guitar on H-Gang is really part of call and response and juxtaposition that's all over H-Gang vocals and instruments...Gospel without being gospel. Stern's outstanding, but if H-Gang strategy continues probably not the best fit...

Why does everybody have it in for the good doctor all of a sudden?

The way I see it, Mu is a smart guy with some practicle, great stuff to say which is totally in context with the aim of the Bluebook">I think) and what is appearing in it at various times.
I myself don't see a discussion board like this being used as a place to tell other folks to shut up.

it's typical that a lot of musiciens are fans of Steely dan.The admiracion is so big cause musiciens know the value and complexity of that music.
I remember a headline of a Belgium newspaper,at the occasion of the Brussels Steely dan concert in 2000,that if someone would let explose a bomb in the concert hall there would no more musicians in belgium.
I saw Mike Stern a few years ago in Juuls jazz club and had the opportunity to make a nice talk with him.
In reality if there are two artists that i would like to see working with Donald and Walter then i surely choose for Mike Stern and Toots Thielemans.

That particular Mike Stern album happens to be one of my fav as well, plus Metheny's Off Ramp, the track Are You Goin With Me is sheer magic and breath taking. Happens so, I once saw Stern and Bob Berg">alas, the late Bob Berg) perform in Maastricht, a small venue, they were superb...
The Dutch trumpeter Saskia Laroo is also fond of Steely Dan music.. She'll soon be participating in an interview but already said that when she is performing in Poland, a lot of the musicians she works with listen to the music of Steely Dan as well ...
So does her partner, the American pianist Warren Byrd, also a Steely Dan fan...

I was just wondering what will be the composition of the Donald Fagen tourband?
I think to be able to reproduce Fagens music you need casi the same number of musicians as with Steely Dan tours.
His music is so full of complexity and details that a quartet or quintet would not be able to do the job.

To Josey: yes Tales from Hudson is one of my all time favourites. I put this Breckers jewel in my personnal all time top 10 list.Sometimes it is very hard to make a choice but here's that list without giving a specific order :

Thanks Fezman I've been to the Opera House a couple of times since the renovatioin and you are 100% right, it is going to be a great venue. Its comfortable and the sound is A1. This really will be the best way to see DF. As great as seeing the Dan in large concert halls has been, their music really lends itself to smaller places like the Opera House. If you've seen the live DVD you know how the smaller stage and hall makes that show. The acoustics in the Opera House will make it a memorable night.

At best, Kamamiriad was a nice, little, playing it safe, I'm-coming-out-of-a-funk, holding-pattern, musical travelogue.
It was way too story-laden. The music supported the story rather than vice-versa. None of the songs really">ironically) "go anywhere" - no strong melodies on any of the first 3 songs or the last one.
(I've heard live bootleg versions of "Countermoon" and "Teahouse..." and they are lifeless, stagnant entities.)
Even though Uncle Don didn't want to sound">to use his own word) "didactic" he accomplished just that.
But that was then(1993) and this is now(2006) - he's a different guy.
As far as we know, the Black Dog has left him">or is under control) and he has achieved upteen successes, both personally and professional along the way.
So I suspect "...Cat" will be a gutsier, braver and perhaps fearless animal.

Boston Rag, I was at both of those shows as well. It was awesome the first nite not knowing what to expect. Not many people had ever seen them. The instrumental intro of Royal Scam, Bad Sneakers and Aja was great. Then Green Earings......Its like it was yesterday. I still have my Aja T-shirt from that one. I was not planning on going the second nite but I went back and got seats in the parking lot and it was just as good.

I have to agree with DEACONBLUE about being cautious about judging other people's music...though I must admit that I can't understand why some of the music that sells extremely well is so lame while what we like is sublime yet doesn't appeal to the masses. I'd also guess that musically, we have more discerning tastes than the masses in our ability to appreciate fine tunes, fine production, fine players, fine chiba...you know. Oh well, we are special, aren't we??!

Also re: Jamie Cullum - I've got one of his CD's because it has an awesome version of Wind Cries Mary - a jazzer doing a Hendrix tune. I've heard he puts on a great show. I tried getting tickets here but seemed to miss getting good seats at either the pre-sale or the regular sale but I've not given up on getting good seats just yet.

I saw himin december 2005 in Brussels where he give a terrific show.

It was a really magical night.

Don't worry, temps probably won't be 45 degrees">most likely 15-20 degrees warmer, actually), the location isn't in Alpine, it's on an Indian reservation just east of Lakeside. It's still a drive from San Diego, about 30 minutes away, but the reservation hosts a number of good acts throughout the year, so that's probably why Fagen chose it.

You're are absolutely right. That also beeing the reason why it doesn't make any sense comparing them to other acts. And the reason why you spend your entire time in between Dan, Don or Walt releases looking for similar music, without any luck.

Great to hear you mentioning Glen Tilbrook

Caught him live on a solo tour in a pub in Dundee a couple of years back and he was superb, really got the crowd">about 200) involved in the act.

This was about the time when a cover of Lou Reeds Perfect Day was top of the UK singles chart, each line sung by a different singer">everyone from Bono to Tom Jones, Dr John and Huey from Fun Loving Criminals).

Anyway, Glen got half the audience up on stage to each sing one of the lines with him for his rendition of the song!

The highlight however was ealier in the set where he held up his spare acoustic and asked if anyone in the audience fancied playing with him. Guess who found himself up there with him!

I got to jam along to the Squeeze classic 'take me I'm yours' with him and never stopped grinning for a week afterwards!

Nice man happy memories!

TJ, the Dan were never leaders of some musical movement, "new sound and style," or "groundbreaking new thing." They were in indeed groundbreaking. But they virtually ignored the British invasion from the decade prior. They were "the antithesis of punk" as one reviewer once put it. They are certainly not grunge gods nor would I want them to be. Once upon a time, they were linked with the prog-rockers, but they were unique among them in my opinion. My guess is their music is so sophisticated, it doesn't lend itself to immitation, upon which movements like that are built. So in that sense, I don't see that much has changed. I do agree with you that it's pointless to make musical comparisons. Live and let live. Enjoy what you enjoy. I'll continue to worship anything Dan.

Crysler, my only point in bringing up Diana Krall was that she might be responsible for changing Costello's musical taste, if indeed his tastes have changed with time. In keeping with Tj's point, I don't have any desire to debate the relative merits of various jazz chicks. Carolyn Leonhart? ;-)

Anyone care to comment on how much better the H gang album version from I tunes is than the radio version? I burned it to a disc and put it in my Surround Sound, the groove is just phenominal. I could listen to the intro all day.

Quickly on Diana Krall: she had been, up until these latest records, a proficient interpreter of standards. Her best for my money was a record called "All for You," a tribute to the music of Nat King Cole, where she played some muscular Tin Pan Alley and bebop piano. In fact, she's an accomplished pianist who can cover a lot of territory. Then the star-maker machinery kicked in about 3-4 years ago and you can guess what happened, they dolled her up and watered her down. She loves Joni, Frank and the late great Ray Brown plus she has awfully good legs and that's a start. The one Diana Krall album to have:

I totally agree on the developmental chracteristic you outline, and I agree that they are a unique band who deserve to be front row in music history! No doubt. Sure they are innovative, but not compared to when they were actual pioneers back in the 70's. Today they are innovative inside their frame, but that "new sound and style" the groundbreaking new thing, Danfiend talked about, will most likely not come from Don and Walt.

I agree with a lot of what DEACONBLUE wrote. In a cultural sense its difficult to label any music better than other. Instead it's a question of breaking the codes. Lets face it: Steely Dan is music for music intellectuals. Not nessecarily people with music theoretical backgrounds, but people with a deeper understanding of music who like to be challenged. So the point is not to compare them to 50 cent, the point is to NOT make a comparison at all.

I think "Almost gothic" is possibly the best Steely Dan track ever, and "Everything must go" ranks as one of their best and interesting albums along with "Aja" and "Katy lied". So I think it's unfair to say that they've lost it...

Talking and give opinions about music is a very hard and difficult thing. I hate all the Spears, aguileras, shakiras of this world. Listening to Rapmusic or reggeaton makes me really sick.

With all this Elvis Costello talk, I want to share a true story about him.

Way back in 1977 he played at the Student Union Ballroom at UMass, Amherst. This was one of a few concert venues on campus, and probably the smallest. This was being billed as the social event of the season. He came out on a makeshift stage at about 9:15 and plugged his guitar into an amp and began to play. After a few minutes he was obviously upset about something and mid song stopped playing. He played with the amp for a minute or so, started playing again and after another minute or so stopped again. At this point he took his guitar off, and walked off stage. At this point the rowdy and drunk student crowd starting booing and became very agitated. A minute or so later the lights went on and the PA announced the show was over. He never returned. How do I know this? I was there.

To this day thats what i always think of when I hear him or someone brings his name up.

Danfiend, I think you are mixing things here. There is a lot of commercial junk, like the things you mentioned, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of great innovative music goin on as well. Actually the time has never been better for good quality music due to the fact that production and distribution has never been more accesible,">BlueBook a good example of the last). Music crisis? Not at all. Only in the musicbusiness! Music it self will never be in a state of crisis. But no new undiscovered genre will ever be invented again I suppose. The development will most likely be circular from here on.

I love Steely Dan, and I will always end my musical journeys back home, with the Steely Dan catalog. But to say Don and Walt are innovative today is simply not true. They invented something and decided to stick with it. Which, by the way, is fine my me, and all of you guys as well I suppose.

Not sure what statements you're attributing to Costello, or when they were ostensibly made. I've heard that early in his career, Costello was too quick to dismiss a band applicant, a wanna-be Attraction, for citing Dan and others among his faves/influences, only to ultimately hire the guy. Bruce Thomas I believe. And I've also seen more recent statements where Costello cites Steely Dan among his list of essentials albums, his fave being Countdown to Ecstasy. ">Not sure I'd agree there, but I oh how I love "Your Gold Teeth I".) Perhaps the guy's opinion has changed with time? Perhaps he finally had the "eureka moment" that Toth so eloquently describes. He's not the pissed-off Buddy Holly he used to be. He's even got McPartland in common our boys these days. Plus I think he's married to a jazz chick now. Bingo!! :-) Anyway, I'm here to testify that it is possible to be a casual Costello fan and completely obsessed Dan fanatic. Costello is an artist. Steely Dan are gods.

I've never Heard Elvis C's distain for SD, but I can believe it. His holier-than-thou patronizing attitude is right up there with Lennon, Bono, Townsend, et. al. However he does have a knack for dropping in some interesting chord changes - in 'Girl's Talk' for example.

I hear what you're saying but to be honest Costello is entitled to his opinion, even if we're offended by it. I like some of Costello's stuff but to be honest his best days are way behind him. He's been reduced to performing duets to draw even the smallest attention to himself. He's made some good music in teh past but I wouldn't consider him a major influence in music history, not like Steely Dan has been at least.

Besides, I don't pay the guy for his opinions. I pay him for his music. I can make my own mind up about the other thing...

I would be inclined to agree if it weren't for the high proliferation of HOT GARBAGE in pop music. Kanye West is being dubbed a genius. Usher's "Confessions went platinum NINE TIMES!! 50 Cent sold 11 million in one week. Need I say more? Music today is nothing but a recycling of what was popular in decades past. Neo Soul, Punk Rock, and Alternative Music's ultimate 3-chord bands are nothing more! There hasn't been a new sound and style worth getting excited about in over twenty years. The fact that this egregious non-musical entertainment is loved by millions doesn't prove its viability IMHO. It proves that music is in a state of crisis, one that a new generation of artists have to fight to end.

In short, Steely Dan is what is right with music. People who dislike them could stand to take a lesson. If musicians cared as much about their art as Donald and Walter, the catchphrase most of the aforementioned artists would be using is "Would you like fries with that?"

Anders, that's some ignorant shit right there. You can't ignore the contributions of one artist because of their disdain for another. I'm pretty sure Frank Sinatra couldn't stand Carl Perkins, but it hardly means I'm going to stop listening to one or the other.

Costello has mentioned in liner notes and interviews how SD's Katy Lied album was the inspiration for several songs on the "Get Happy" and "Trust" album">even going so far as to record "Everyone's Gone to the Movies"-ish bells for one song, along with a fretless bass) -- and that he and Graham Parker shared a mutual admiration for "Royal Scam," putting it up there with the Band, Joni and Little Feat's work as the best the crap 70s had to offer.

The only rag on Dan I ever heard was his admission to Bruce Thomas that he was originally turned off by him after he told Elvis that his favorite band was Steely Dan. And that was a 21-year talking at the height of the punk era. And you know? He hired the Dan fan anyway, so put that in your pipe.

To top it, Elvis has employed plenty of Dan sidemen, including a tour a few years back with Peter Erskine.

The way I see it, even if someone is misguided enough to feel that way about Steely Dan, it doesn't mean they themselves produce bad music-in fact-NO MUSIC IS BAD! Nothing that can be adored by thousands of people, and which has all the colour and ever-changing superness of music could ever be bad, no matter what form it's in or who made it!

oooooh, the album cover art is up on amazon and Morph is now #15 in sales!!! Wow, that's up from #125 yesterday. I could check back 4 or 5 times and that # changes. Remeber the thing that allowed TvN and EMG to debut in the top ten is Internet Sales - the pre-sales all count in that first week...ergo there's oftern a big dropoff in week 2 without a hit single. I've alread heard Morph a LOT more on even the internet radio stations than Cousin Dupree or Last Mall or Blues Beach. I wouldn't be suprisd to see Morph top Tomorrow's Girls, even without a Rick Moranis vidoe that played on VH1, when VH1 actualy plaed music videos...

I'm down with that reading of H-Gang, the ironic twist or the "uh-oh" kicker being that the very dangerous Denise for all her slash and burn desires apparently settles down with some lucky(!) guy and takes up residence in Iowa or something. So much for the revolutionary spirit it seems. But the film being made about her depicts her voice, dream and soul on fire. We get no inkling she actually sold out her dream for a picket-fence and a gingham dress.

As far as what H Gang is about, I think tht this song, like most other Donald songs, is pretty much surface layer. Denise was in jail so the band wasn't playing at all, she's thinking of new songs and such the whole time. She gets out, and calls in the Gong sisters to take it out on the road. Everyone thinks it's great and to this day talks about the incredible sounds they heard. Despite that enthusiasm, they go their seperate ways, Denise gets hitched and moves to the midwest. No real news about whats going on, if they're thinking of getting back together or not, but theres a film in production that their music might just work for. I don't know if the H stands for anything at all, or if it's just a powerplay...H Gang as a band name to sound powerful, like H Bomb or whatever. A band goes through a life cycle and fades away, but might make a last show of it. Metaphor for life and all that...

The good thing about Donald albums is that they are fairly accessible...of course, I've always appreciated the depth of Steely lyrics more than the accessibility, and I really do think that's a big contribution of Walter's, and makes me look forward to his album even more. Well, that and my VIP status, of course.

Big Fan - Well he does have 3 albums to draw from. Plus, True Companion, Century's End and a few other solo tracks. He did mention a few surprizes a couple of times. I saw him do Dylan's "Down Along The Cove" in one of his out of hibernation shows in the early 90's. It was fun to hear and he made it very much his own tune. I hope he does a couple of things like that.

Reading the latest Billboard article got me thinking even more about what we can expect for a setlist. Sounds like much more from the current album C1 which is different than the SD concerts where they limited the selection to only two or three new songs.

Some other possibilities that might show up are the non album tracks from Kami such as Confide in Me or Big Noise, New York. It sounds like DF will be picking some more esoteric stuff along with the covers. Either would be fine by me.

While I digging through all of the Euro singles from Kami last night C1 many of which have not seen daylight for over 10 years, I stumble upon a live recording from the Lonestar CafC in 1991. Interesting to hear DF around the same time as the Beacon Theater dates and what he chose to perform then. Does anyone think that these solo shows">and the mentioned covers) will be more like the Rock and Soul shows, with or without the other guests?

Since you brought this up, ygk, I've been thinking that the "H" in H-Gang is short for "hystero" or "hyster," Greek prefixes for "womb." "Hystero-" evolved into "uterus" in Latin. Anglo-Saxon turned uterus into womb which then evolved into "woman."

How good it was to hear H-Gang on the "real" radio the other day! Took me totally by surprise when I heard it on the new Long Island area station 92.9 while driving home! The announcer then "confirmed" a Steely Dan tour for late summer......

I find it odd that the DF Borgata A.C. show is listed on the Borgata event calendar with a link to TM, but TM does not seem to list the show yet... And the tix are supposed to go on sale saturday at 10 AM!

The Tower Theatre show has been on TM for a week or more and those tix go on sale at the same time.

Also, it seems to me the TM DF listings are somewhat needlessly complicated with listings for DF nat'l, DF int'l, DF Band, and DF Band '06, not to mention the "no dates scheduled" for B&F. Maybe TM isn't responsible for how each event gets listed, but still...

massey hall is a great venue ... it is a small theatre right in the heart of downtown toronto ... if you have a copy of "All The World's A Stage" you can see all sorts of pictures of the venue inside --> this is where Rush recorded that album in June of 1976

TJ...you need some sort of DVD player to play the DVD. Your regular DVD player for films would be fine. It will read a DVD-A or a Dual Disc.

Both those types of disc offer a 5.1 surround sound mix. But you need a surround amp">and three more speakers) to enjoy that.

Still, you will get higher resolution">better sound) just by running a DVD-A or Dual Disc">on the DVD side) through your DVD player if it's hooked up to your stereo.

If you also have a DVD-A player">many DVD players now come with both DVD-A and SACD - the other surround format - built in) that is meant to be better still.B0@

It was '74 and I was fresh back from summer vacation, sophomore year, reunited with my college buddies, who, like me, were all obsessively devoted SD fans. "Pretzel Logic" had just been released and that semester we would all be playing the grooves off the vinyl every chance we'd get. Being young and foolish, we'd try to play the tunes on crude instruments, eventually toss it in and then end up cranking the album, just one more time...Then play the other 2 albums. Then "party" a bunch and try to play other Dan songs on the same instruments. And this would go on repeatedly for long stretches. It goes a good part of the way toward explaining my lack of a diploma.

Anyway, we jumped on the chance to see them at the Palace Theater in the Connecticut "Valley" city of Waterbury. Ten of us scored 3rd row seats and we piled into a couple of cars and rode down from State U. to see the boys play. Too thrilling for words, believe me. Except we all got completely loaded before">and during) the show. I scarcely remember the proceedings and, looking back I think it's a doggone shame it happened that way. I regret it to this day but, don't get me wrong, I still like a good party. But remember kids, and adults too: strive to stay at least a little sober when you're out there making those memories. If I had, I'd have a better story to tell about the night than I do, which is no story at all. Tsk.

It's staggering to me that 34 years after these guys first became the soundtrack to my life, I can still get to hear stuff like "H Gang", and that unique, unmistakable, groovy "sound" is back in my ears again anew. How is it possible that a song can sound so completely fresh and at the same time evoke reminiscences of the time when it's composer first became popular, nearly 3-1/2 decades back? It is simply the tastiest, hippest sound to come out of a speaker, EVER. And it holds up like you wouldn't believe. It's miraculous in the true sense of the word. Discuss.

I am, as I write this, plotzing in anticipation of Don's disc and tour, and possible tacked-on Steely Dan summer tour. It's a dream come true for fans. And I only hope the boys keep composing and making their Steely Dan magic just like always. It's a far more enjoyable world for having their music in it.

I totally agree SOH. H is just a nice place you don't wanna leave! I especially dig the backingvocals. It sounds like Donald, which makes them a little less clean, which is good.

The way "boy" is prunounced makes me think of Michael McDonald on the Aja video, telling about how Don and Walt in detail instructed him on pronouncing every single word in the lyrics.

On the Rock and Soul 2002 tour, did Walter only play on Steely Dan tunes or was he on stage and participating for most if not all of the show. I was there for the Columbia show but senility has set in and I just don't remember

Walter's whole process is somewhat different than Donald's I'm willing to go out a limb and bet. Stevie D - On June 10, 2003 when EMG was released, there were other big acts with CDs being released on the same day: Radiohead, Fountains of Wayne, Metallica, so Tower Records opened at midnight.
You can't get it any sooner than that.

"It depends on how my shows go and if there's a demand for it," Fagen told Billboard.com when asked if Steely Dan would mount a full tour or just play select shows.

It's also too early to predict when the veteran jazz/rock act will begin work on a new album, which will be the follow-up to 2003's "Everything Must Go." Says Fagen, "Not until after the summer, that's for sure. [Guitarist] Walter [Becker] is also working on his own solo album right now. He went into the studio a month or two ago, but I haven't heard any of it yet."

Fagen's tour comes in support of the album "Morph the Cat," due March 7 via Reprise. He will be backed on the road by a number of the musicians that play on the disc, including guitarists Jon Herrington and Wayne Krantz, drummer Keith Carlock and bassist Freddie Washington.

It looks like 2006 is gonna be the year,isn't it? First a Fagen solo tour and surely followed up by a Walters solo one.
And last but not least a Steely dan indian summer tour.
I hope Donald have the intention to pass in Europe because there are a lot of fans there too.

My guess would be the that it's the whole album in DVD-Audio">96 kHz, 5.1 surround). Maybe a dual disc with a DVD-A side? Fagen's other solo stuff is available in DVD-A, as are EMG, 2vN, and Gaucho.

Fife, I did some Google mining for [ "Warner theatre" capacity ] and found a couple useful entries. At first I wasn't sure if it was the SAME Warner Theatre since the address of 1299 Pennsylvania Avenue was different from the one given in the theatre's website's directions page. But their contact page lists TWO addresses. The Pennsylvania Avenue one must be an administrative office or something because they list that with the additional info of "Suite 111." Then they list separately... "Theatre Location: 13th & E Streets NW, Washington D.C."---which matches up with what the directions page indicates.

Heads up on the Washington DC show. It's now posted on the Warner web site, finally! There is a link for ticketmaster but no sign of it there. Apparently the tickets go on sale 1/27/06 at noon. Prices are $65 for orchestra and mid-balcony, $55 for upper balcony. Does anyone have any idea how many the Warner seats? Can't find it for the life of me.

I've listened to H Gang a dozen or so times today. Its a great tune no doubt. I hear so many reminders of other great Donald and Dan tunes. I played it for co workers, family and friends who think I am a bit out there in my passion for his and their music. They all agree, this is so different than the typical music being released these days. They still think I am out there, but perhaps are now more willing to join me. Can't wait for the rest of the album and of course seeing it live!

I too got back from Pechanga where I met Ed.

I also got tickets in the center orchestra section 'C'.

It looks like a really small /intimate theater and it only holds 1200 people. I am thrilled that I can see Donald Fagen at such a small venue.

Jodi - I just checked Ticketmaster - there are still plenty of tickets for Boston available. Best right now are the second level cost seats - lower lever orchestra - row T left side - that's one of the small seating sections you'll see on the floor plan. I'd try to getseats out from under the balcony though. I'd consider close to the front balcony seats instead of underneath.

The first single is fantastic, what a great groove! I love the opening and the backing vocals, there is something sweet and summery about this song, reminds me of the way that 2vN was/is a springtime record. My ears needed this! I'm waiting semi-patiently for the Oakland Parmount Theatre tix to go on sale. Hopeful the VIP won't be too brutal, I can't bear the thought of going to my hometown beautiful theatre and being relegated to the back. Life is short and I think I am going to pay the money or regret it later. I can hardly wait, the last show it looks like in this leg at least, I feel so lucky. I just listened to H Gang on my 5.1 system for the first time, before today I had only been using my crappy laptop speakers.
Anyways....Wow!!!!!
That bass line is AWESOME TO THE XTREME!!!!!!!

Album sales were 600million downloads were 300million. Downloads are essentially the future. Too bad the sound quality is laughable compared to CD's.

When I tried to get great seats for the Los Angeles Wiltern show and got totally boxed out, I went to that VIP package site to see what was going on. Now, I know that these are a lot more expensive, but, if you are willing to pay the higher price, you can get within a very close distance of the stage. I found this out even after the TicketZOMBIE pre sale ended in total disaster.

Just a suggestion. Otherewise, check eBay the week of the show.

Hi Gretchen, LadyB et al - Today was the day for the actual Westbury box office...my only mistake was in thinking that it wasn't open 'til 12:30. It actually opened at 10. SO when I got there there were SEVEN tickets left! And the seller said that there would be 2,000 seats total. Wheeeeeeeee!

Well, Pechanga">in Temecula, CA) goes on sale tomorrow morning, but, I called the box office and they said that TicketMORON isn't carrying this show, and that there are 5 stations that will be manned at the box office in expectation for the rush to buy tickets. Now, Temecula is over 2 hours driving time away from Los Angeles, so driving there to buy tickets is just not going to happen. So, you can call their box office directly, but be ready to stay on hold for some time.

If TicketNAZI IS going to carry this show, well, the folks at Pechanga don't know, and I am going on their information ...

But all of this is quite moot for me ... here's why - -

I finally heard H-Gang for the first time today.">Thanks Soho.) It's classic Donald alright. I can't wait to hear it in the context of the entire album. As far as what we should expect to be in Fagen's setlist this March; you know he's gonna surprise us! There are only three albums of solo work, so you know we have some Donald-reworked jazz standards in store. I just want to be blown away! I haven't been blown away in a VERY VERY long time!

Looking forward to hooking up with the OL'-GANG. That might do it.
We're gonna Wreck the Chicago Theatre and where ever else we end up!

I should have clarified that I believe the Borgata show in 2003 was a late addition to the tour, probably because the casino was so new. By the time it was added I'd already ordered my Camden tix. I think that parts of the hotel were even still unfinished and under construction when SD made their appearance from what I can remember having read.

The seating chart that I previously found for the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA, does NOT show any indication of specific seat numbers/arrangements. The chart that TM shows for the venue DOES have that info...

So that's one case where TM is giving more info than what I found elsewhere online, but that's probably the exception rather than the rule, especially since the Tower Theatre doesn't seem to even have their very own website that I can tell. I would think most venues have their own properly maintained and regularly updated site and would be as, if not more, accurate than whatever TM shows.

Still waiting for the Borgata, A.C., NJ, show to pop up on TM to compare pricing.">Both the Tower and Borgata shows go on sale on TM same day and time!). I went for the 5star vips. Just an FYI. Ticketbastard has seats available as of last night. Some say warning Obstrctd View. Others are at the back of the Orchestra Section and up in the Mezz.
Ebay sellers are asking top buck for some decent seats. Front Rows up in the Mezz and Orch seats that seem to be 20 or so rows back.
For a little more, whether you go the 4star or 5star pkgs, seems a better deal at this time. From the looks of the website the packages are still available. Just trying to help out.
Looking forward to March.

Chuck Rainey is a brilliant musician, but slightly inaccurate.
For example, he says his favorite SD track of all is New Frontier from Gaucho with Anthony Jackson replacing Chucks' original bass part. But of course New Frontier is from Nightfly with Abe Laborial on bass. Chuck also calls Elliot Scheiner Elliot Caesar or something.
But Chuck is right about a couple things - the arc of great feel">due to players such as himself), especially from Katy to Gaucho and much of Nightfly has never been equaled.
And SD have alienated lots of important people: Chuck himself, Gary Katz, Roger Nichols, Jim Keltner, even each other. Elliot Scheiner was on the outs for several years, but he seems to be the rare person coming back.

"What was one of the most memorable sessions you have been on?"

"When I worked on Steely Dan's Gaucho album, I was just getting used to the idea of completely obsessive-compulsive studio guys making themselves crazy in pursuit of perfection. We were trying to do the title track. Most of it was written out by Donald. I was playing piano, Victor Feldman was playing electric piano, Steve Khan was playing guitar, Anthony Jackson was on bass, and Jeff Porcaro played drums. We worked on that one song for about 12 hours starting at noon. The track is complex and long -- six or eight minutes. We had gotten four takes.

To the players, all four sounded perfect; none of us could hear anything wrong with any of them. Donald and Walter were sitting in the booth looking like they had just tasted a rotten egg. They felt it wasn't really working. It was frustrating to us. All of the players loved Steely Dan's music so much. We were really happy to be on the record and were working so hard and being so patient. At midnight, Becker and Fagen said, "We're just not going to get this one. We're going to throw out the song." Then they split.
The band was depressed because we hadn't made them happy. [Producer] Gary Katz stayed and Victor went back to his hotel. The engineer, Khan, Anthony, Porcaro and I stayed from midnight until 4:00 AM. We did seven more takes, and all seven sounded perfect to us. We were exhausted and went home."

Becker and Fagen came back a few days later and listened to all of the takes. They called us to thank us for staying and doing all of the extra work and said, "I think there might be something here that we can use." They sat with Gary and started cutting the two-inch multitrack tape. According to Gary, there were at least a dozen edits between the various takes. Once they had done that and they had this two-inch analog tape with all the cuts, they erased everything but the drums! All of this was to get a drum performance that they really liked. Walter came in and replayed the bass part and I came back in and redid the acoustic and electric piano tracks">Donald later redid the electric piano). Steve Khan came in and redid the guitar tracks, and they were on their way."

"That sounds like such a painful way to make a record."

"Very painful. After Gaucho and Nightfly, Donald took a long break. This process was the only way he could satisfy himself, but it was so painful to go through that he couldn't stand it. Maybe there's something wrong with the picture when it gets to that point. I don't think it's supposed to hurt that much."

I've heard Rainey had issues with Fagen. It really came to head during the Nightfly sessions. I don't remember where I read it, but he was not happy with how he was treated. I think he was brought in and things were not ready to go. If someone remember where that was, please put a link up for it....very insightful.

Er, so I've got bad news. I won't be coming to Chicago for the DF concert...it turns out I'm moving to my own apartment. And about at that time, the concert would just be too much of a detour/expense from the mundanities of life. But um, if somebody gets ahold of a soundboard or something.... um....

Been listening to "H Gang" and trying to refine my lyrical perceptions. Below is my best guess at this time. Choruses are sung in harmony by backing vocalists with the parenthetical bits added by Donald alone. There are a few subtle differences between choruses...

And speaking of Florida Room, someone mentioned that they heard some resonances of H-Gang in it. I hear it too, it's the trumpets bussing by with their "baa-daa 2-3-4-and-baa-daa 2-3-4" behind the 2nd set of quatraines of each 8 line verse. In Florida Room we get them most forcefully at the bridge but really all through the song. The trumpets give the impression of movement, they pick things up and move things along. You hear them a lot in Gershwin whenever he makes musical reference to an urban setting, Rhapsody in Blue being the obvious example, people bustling about, traffic wizzing by. Nelson Riddle and Billy May used them liberally and with great effect with Frank on his great 50s records. Donald also uses them in H-Gang to fill in and support things whenever the guitar solo wanes between 2 bar or four bar passages.

Funny how a the sound of an instrument can remind you of so many other songs, like the guitar in H-Gang does of Haitian Divorce or how the entrance of the sax solo here reminds people of Pixeleen or the bump and cadence of WASAM. We begin to hear the continued contribution of Walt Weiskopf to Donald's material, we begin to discern his voice, we remain keenly aware of Donald's musical lexicon, the well-trod paths that he somehow keeps fresh, his signature sounds, old but new, his musical character through all these years. Which is why the guy down the hall from me stuck his head in my office and offered, "that's Steely Dan, right?" when he heard the opening strains of H-Gang.

Now how about that melodica in H-Gang?

Yes did a 5.1 show a few years back which was INCREDIBLE. Best live sound I ever heard in my life - it was in a dedicated music hall too. Even Chris Squire was just standing there with a giant smile on his face at a few points between tunes ripping his bass just to enjoy the low end slam capabilities of the system. It wasn't just the 5.1, but the incredible dynamics and headroom of that particular system they used.

My source says that it will just be top notch equipment for the DF tour.

But, again, we'll all enjoy a treat - hopefully....

John, NYC: Interesting news... Green Book is a good track, very complex, to complex actually. The same with the title song from The Nightfly. They are to rationel created, and not very emotionel. No flow at all. So I certainly don't hope Morph will be like that. Hopefully it's full of complex material with a flow, a beat, something you like immediately, that touches you, and still lasts for years....

P.S.) North Fork Theater at Westbury has a capacity of 3000 people when the show is in "full round". This show is in "the half-round". So approximately how many seats is that? It can't be 1500 can it? Nah, probably more like 1800 seats, but WOW is that an intimate setting for a Donald Fagen show? This is shaping up to be something exceptionally special.

I have to laugh at myself for being so incredibly obsessed with this tour (and this band) - it's all I've been thinking about on my off hours all week - looks like I'm in good company!

Big Fan - only doing a quick trip to NYC - no side family trips or other nearby facilities. Perhaps we can hook up in May?

Gretchen - I think that purse is a must have - nice find. Looking forward to meeting up with you on both coasts - NYC & Penchanga I think - we'll have to coordinate our accessories

I see a coordinated effort to on the individual websites out nearly at the same time as a good sign. I believe that the freedom to do a variety of projects - like run off to NYC or create your own music - helps to make it more funn when you do get together.

Congrats everyone on getting tickets no matter where they are - these small theaters will be an unusual treat. The bonus is that we get to hang out with those of our kind. I also think that the tickets offered up at presales aren't just the best ones - they hold some good seats back for the regular sale too...keep your timer set and your fingers poised.

Just out of curiousity I went to Ticketmaster and looked for Wiltern tickets. When did these tickets go on sale again? They're damned near sold out! I think I was looking at Level4 Row R or something like that. Probably not bad seats considering it's a small venue but DAMN can these tickets really be selling out this fast???! By the week of the concert people will be offering you thier house and both cars for those "so-so" tickets you bought today... LOL!

Well, I bought a few seats. None of them spectacular. I repeatedly "rolled" for different seat selections and nothing came up that was better than Level 4 Rows R, S, and T.

I ended up in the balcony, Row EE in Loge, which I think will be a better sight line than being under the balcony in Level 4 (or should that be sub-level ChroMagnon SeaMonster 27 ?)

The venue only seats something like 2,300 people and it's right in the center of Los Angeles, not to mention that so many of US around the country and around the world (HELLO TO STILL SPARKIN' - look forward to meeting you !) sat at their computers at 10:00 AM PST SHARP ! trying to get SOMETHING/ANYTHING good.

TicketBASTARD !
Make a note of it.

(Time to start calling in favors from those in the "industry" with juice ...)

Crazy news..just found out from my intern friend at Reprise that some of the New York shows will be filmed for a possible DVD release in conjuction with the fagen boxed set.

ALSO, AND THIS IS A BIG RUMOR....."MUNCKMUSIC.COM, WHICH DOES THE DIRECT TO DISC LIVE SHOWS FOR THE DEAD, BRUCE HORNSBY, LITTLE FEAT ETC..HAS SHOWED SOME INTEREST IN FAGEN'S TOUR. Heads up for fans from overseas trying to get tickets.

I just had a pair at the Wiltern Theatre in LA fall through my hands...and I'm not sure exactly why yet.

I never put much on my Hong Kong VISA card, and had a properly registered account with Ticketmaster...yet when I got to the final hurdle it kept telling me there was a problem (unspecificed) with the credit card.

I mentioned the account was properly set up...that's only as far as I know, because prior to trying to purchase these tickets online, I had never used the account before.

I have at least one more show I'm trying to use this account for...so if and when I get this worked out, I'll post again to alert anyone else to whatever it is I find out.

I'm still not so sure when Beckers albums coming around myself, although I'm guessing, and hoping, some time soon. However, all this Fagen-related noise, and the silence from Beckers end are freaking me out.

I got three sets of 2 tickets all on the main floor center sections, but in the single alphabet seats. Gonna keep checking to see if anything better gets released though...

About eight or nine listens now.

The WASAM horn sound is there, as others have said.

The chord changes under the sax solo are really unpredictable, almost jarring....a bit like West of Hollywood.

Funny, after a few plays parts of H Gang started to remind of Dionne Warwick's Love Power, written by Burt Bacarach...especially near the beginning.

So great to hear that guitar. I hope there's a lot of good guitar playing and guitar sounds on the album.

Tagging on to NYBs earlier post - the other cool thing about seeing the early shows withDF or The Dan is you often see material that is droped later - sometimes even pretty immediately. If you are able it is often fruitful to see the first few shows and then some towards the end of the tour.

One source is telling me that we may be in for a treat regarding the PA system - I am hearing that they are not going to be using the house PAs, but something "special". I do NOT have that confirmed as of yet, but am praying!

My Mu Mu - yes, the key change at 2:20 or thereabouts essentially ramping the pitch up to the instant classic Jimi Hendrix-flavored electric blue solo at 2:30, as crisp and on the attack as that immortal Phil Woods' sax in the middle of Dr. Wu. Weiskopf is no slouch here around 2:00, recalling again Phil Woods in an even more pointed manner. Recall that the Pixeleen solo was also great by Weiskopf, it's a similarly constructed and excellent example of how special he is here on H-Gang.

Donald's horn charts are sturdy and predictably funn as ever, giving nods always to the Bebop Days always on DF's horn arrangements, it's not even his instrument, on H-Gang I hear Nelson Riddle.

This may seem like a really stupid comment and I don't mean to insult anyone's intelligence or single anyone out, but I seem to recall (I could be wrong) one or two folks having ordered tickets and then asking here "Are these good seats I got?"

Well, I only just thought to do this myself in preparation for efforts to get tix to the two shows I have interest in (I'll only do one though) and that's...

In advance of the sale (or presale) go to the venue's website and try to find the seating chart. Once found, either save it to your hard drive (right-click, save picture as) for easy access (or printing) later---or print it out directly from the web page, your preference.

This way when TicketMaster offers seats X, Y, & Z, in Section D, Row F, you'll be able to quickly look at the seating chart and decide whether to accept the offer or reject it and try again.

As others pointed out earlier, though, I wouldn't reject too much/often or you may get locked out.

Just thought I'd mention that as a helpful strategic hint for anyone who may not have thought of it already or anyone who just doesn't order tickets online a lot.

Saw a post that mentioned a date for HGang on I tunes. Is that confimed? When is it? Any way to get it earlier? Got my 4 star package last night, now I have a huge issue, who to take? I have been to every Boston area Dan show including Manchester since the first Tweeter (then Great Woods) show in 93. Aja T-shirt from that one in tough shape now. I have been with the guys, the wife, couples, friends wives and couples, have hosted parties at hotels before shows, done the limo thing etc. This could be the perfect show to pass the torch the 16 year old son. He loves the Dan and perhaps it is his time! I would have to be on best behavior but it may be the way to go. No scotch whiskey all night long, no smokin with the boys upstairs, no rolling out the bones and raising the pitchers, no test tubes and scales, no fine columbian, no cuervo gold. I may have to rethink this.

Rajah: Good analysis. I have to run home and cook pasta, but the delay at the 0.22 sec mark is more Fagen moving the Rhodes from the "2" beat to the "3" beat... along with a little slowing of the drumming and snare...very jazzy, very vaudeville...shifting from emphasizing backbeat and offbeat "3"


similar "mu-like" chords before the first verse...a way of breaking up the song and introducing introducing...same chords I think underneath just before the beginning of the guitar solo

H-Gang does a little somethin funny at about 4:00, it's like Carlock and Washington slow up just a tad after the last chorus, they kind of pull back a little and wind up, then they come cascading back into 4/4, a retard is what you might call it and it causes a kind of slingshot effect for the guitarist's final blow. This song screams out, "I was produced by a experienced recorder of music, a major dude."

Other random observations:

- 3 other much more subtle retards at :22, 1:00, 1:58 always at the end of the chorus,

- mu chords between both the quatraines of the verses which also serve to dampen and give the aural effect of slowing things down,

- this song is in A minor

- Donald's voice gets slurred on the words, "Denise got hitched and she living in the mid-west," on the words, "hitched," and "mid-west." It makes it funny, it's that "uh-oh," kicker in a lot of steely Dan songs which we've discussed upon many an occasion.

- behind the last word of "and a voice and a dream and a soul on fire," (beautiful imagery, heroic) he hits his usual, "fiyah," and then the guitar trills in a complimentary fashion immediately after.


Masterful down to the smallest touches, how can you not admire a person who takes this much pride in his work?

The tickets that went on Pre-sale today are only a certain block of tickets, right? In other words, the sponsor is permitted a certain block of tickets to offer up for Pre-sale, but these AREN'T all the good seats, correct? What I mean to say is that when these tickets go onsale to the general public on Monday at 12:30pm there will still be some excellent seats left, maybe even some front row seats, no? I could be wrong about this but I'm pretty sure that it works this way. Does anybody know if I'm right or not?

Just caught the last 1:30 or H-Gang on XM - it's way polished, yet immediate on higher Q stream. The outtro is very tasty.

Indeed, The production is well oiled and flawless. Donald has given it an open sound that does harken back to Nightfly/Aja days. Even more alive if possible. I don't think I've ever heard better instrument separation. Smooth but as hot as it is cool. Sexy - yeah. It may turn out an album about death is the most alive thing Donald's done. I felt sorry for Rosanne Cash's Black Cadillac - she's an excellent and creative artist - which followed H-Gang...sounded like crap in comparison...

Now Sheryl Crow's on - sounds like it was recorded in a tin hut ...

I had an easy time on Iloveallasskiss yesterday getting VIP tix for Boston show. Are many of the veneus sold out at this point for VIP seats?

Anyone from Boston thinking about hooking up for a pre-pre show party at a local bar let me know, maybe we can all hook up.

And I STILL haven't heard the single. However, I am extremely excited, knowing that I have two shows to look forward to. I did really want to go to the Chicago Theater show, but I can't manage the flight and tickets right now, especially since I VIP'ed Beacon.

Nonetheless......I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and putting faces with names at the shows.

- used the usual "morph" password

and saw indications that all venues would have the VIP treatment option, although details on most were yet to come. I am assuming (and we know what happens when one assumes from time-to-time) that if information on the VIP event at a given city is "coming soon" that it really will happen at some point.

Still locked out of Ticketwasted, and hoping I will get unlocked by the time the Minneapolis tickets go on sale

If you are locked out, you could try flushing your web cache, remove any TM cookies or renew your DHCP lease, if your IP is configured that way. Or at least go to another computer if you can. Just some ideas to get you running. What a buzz I got going about all this!

BTW: I haven't been to all the venues but sounds like the Beacon and Chicago Theatres are sorta Roseland like in terms of fan get togethers but these places have seating. Still, the Chicago is a gorgeous Beaux Arts theatre from the '20s and considered one of the best types of it's architecture in the world. (That's the American Insitute of Architect's opinion.) So it will have a great vibe.

Just before 7 am this morning, Chicago Public Radio, the local NPR station, had an announcement from the DJ as a commercial that "Donald Fagen Band '06" was going to be at the Chicago Theatre on March 18 and tickets were going on sale this Saturday at 10 am through http://www.livenation.com I'm not familiar with http://www.livenation.com -- can someone fill me in? They seem to connect to Ticketmaster but don't offer the pre-sale.

ALSO: The "Chicago Reader" (for you non-Chicagoans, it's comparable to "The Village Voice") has a quarter page ad for DF show, including the album cover, on page 30 of section 3 (the Music section). Chris Potter's gig in a couple of weeks at JazzShowcase is also listed in the same section. Haven't checked the Trib and Sun-Times yet. The ad also lists livenation.com and not Ticketmaster.

When Donald says "Apocalypse wow!" I think of all you folks here! Special shout out to Lady Bayside, SueDave, Matt and the rest!

Thanks for the info on Potter although I disagree. What serious musician (jazz or rock) would turn down a gig with Steely Dan? The only people that have ever heard of Paul Motian are jazz fans that read Downbeat. The rest of the world has no idea who he is yet everybody loves the Dan. I think Potter is nuts! Bad choice.

fp yes someone did, although we discussed it in great length on the Yellow. It's posted yesterday at 16:10:45 EST here. Long and short of it was Paul Motian also asked Potter to tour at that same time. No serious jazz player is going to pass that chance up. Potter said in the article,"It was the right move."

I seriously think that Ticketmaster blocked my ip address from accessing their site! I continued to dip back into the ticket pool soooooo many times for the Beacon show to see what might pop up (after I had secured my seats, natch...) that I really think they blocked me...I'm currently SOL for CHI, as I'm working and can't get to another computer...

Anybody ever hear of this happening or have any trouble similar to this?
