You know...it's been a while since we've thanked Hoops for, not only, his excellent contributions to the site but the F*&$ing fact that he foots the bill to host this site...as everything else drops away due to the relentless profiteers, here we are being able to mind-meld in cyberspace.

Hoops, I heard a bit of your human cry with the concert-thing...my sincere "thank you" for being there for all of us lesser-so's.

I remember listening to HATWW about 1.5 hundred times when it came out while shining that late '70s silver bowl...sublime. For what two of my coppers are worth, it's more about the places between the ears than any specific place...BTW revisting Van's "Common One" tonight...they broke the mold when they made that Mick.

Absolutely agree with you about the new Dylan CD ....Great stuff !!
and the current edition of Rolling Stone is pretty much "all Bob Dylan, all the time".....lots of good stuff about Bob, his music, and his artwork.
Not too bad for an "old" guy who turns 68 next month :-)

I rarely delve into trying to decipher SD songs...just don't have the time. But since I referenced WesternWorld earlier, and now researching it due to, nothing better to do, I found the following:

"The Lido Shipyard Sausage Company is a restaurant in Newport Beach, CA.

I think Western World may be referring to the play "The Playboy of the Western World." It could be a loose metaphor for the Playboy mansion in LA, since for a while in the 70's there were two Playboy mansions, the original in Chicago and the one in L.A. called "Playboy Mansion West."

It's hard to imagine Donald Fagen and Walter Becker not going to the Playboy mansion, being huge rock stars in the 1970s. "

Help please?

Greetings and salutations...This is surely great news, brought to me in my in-box by Ticketbasturd this morning! I might even be in Florida for the Ruth Eckerd delight! ( I go home for my b-day, end of May, already have Mathisyahu+ Les Claypool lined up, WANEE festival has a sick line up in Florida this year, then the Dan? Bestill my heart!)

I wanted to say, this album format is quite popular....I recall seeing Rush perform "2112" in it's entirety, circa, 1994-96 ish. Another big name is doing the same thing, but it escapes me now...

I think Here at the Western World, might be one of the greatest songs ever recorded? IMHO...

Long may you Dan,

In terms of concert going I see that a lot of the "big acts" are still up there selling out at least the first show of a two show night and so forth.

At the same time I look at what shows I'm considering this year. If this were past years, I would have likely attended shows by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Dead, Elton John, a few different things at the Jazz Showcase (in Chicago) and perhaps some other major arena show just so I could have had the chance to see certain players that I had not before).

Due to finances, job situation, etc. I only plan to see Leonard Cohen next week. If things were like past years, I would have seen him both nights that he is playing Chicago: it's been 15 years since he was on tour and who knows if he ever will again.

It would be great to see those other acts even if they play much the same thing, but I cringe to lay out that kind of money with things as they are. I simply can't do it.

Most all of us here are intense fans who make up a fraction of a percentage of Steely Dan fans. For those other fans who aren't quite as intense, I'd wager enough are in the same mindset as I am about seeing Bob Dylan, etc. There's enough of that to even chill sales at the kind of 3800-seat theatres that SD will be playing.

I get a kick out of SD's humor, calling it the "Rent Money Tour". But I can't help but wonder if that tour name doesn't inadvertently cause casual fans to think twice about the expense.

----

Sorry I'm not up on this but what is the exchange rate between Ł, $, Euros, etc?

----

The new Bob Dylan album has got me hooked the most since "Time Out of Mind" from about 11-12 years ago. Great!

Now if they could only get their dates set up and post them all instead of this trickling in crap.

I think it’s two-fold: the hard-core fans want to hear deeper cuts, not the same old show; the casual fans who went expecting to hear the radio hits left disappointed and won’t go see them again. Where does that leave us? I don’t know, smaller venues with hard-core fans, which would be GREAT, but only if they actually mix it up!

Posted by: hank,

Casual Fan - I think that people have caught on. Yes, the economy is bad and the show is on a Monday. I'm sure that doesn't help with selling tickets. But lets face it. What are you getting for $250? A one set show that lasts about 100 minutes. The same set list with one (maybe two) song changes. How many times are loyal fans going to support any band that operates like this?

And this whole gimmick with playing "full albums" is an illusion. If they choose the first three albums to play in their entirety give me a call. If it's Aja, Scam or Gaucho? Well, wouldn't that just be "déjŕ vu all over again"?

250 bucks for two tickets? in london they're about 55 quid each. i got 2. in paris 78 quid each (also 78 euro), minimum, 115 quid max. i got 3 at 78. but it's a bit steep. i wouldn't want to do 78 too often. in monte carlo theyre 125 euro/quid but they throw in dinner "and the way karen was that night she was literally going to throw in dinner" (quote from Dirty Tricks by Michael Dibdin. funniest novel ever). we only get to see SD every two years, sometimes longer. u folks r lucky!

The three main things that could be driving lower ticket sales?

1. The show never changes and they tour every 20 minutes
2. The show never changes and they tour every 20 minutes
3. The show never changes and they tour every 20 minutes

Don't worry--the tickets will sell out, just like...

Casual Fan, as for me, I'm waffling on the St. Augustine gig. A few friends from here are going...but I'm in the camp that is a bit hesitant to shell out the money for what I'm fairly certain is going to be the same show I've seen roughly 11 times now (with few variations). I'm sure I'd love it if I went, but then I skipped last years tour and the only thing I regretted was not having seen "New Frontier".

On the other hand, the Boston show with the 3 album deal has a ton of appeal. Since my girlfriend lives up there and the setlist would have to be different, I'm seriously considering that one.

Still may end up in St. Augustine though. It's only 1.5 hours south. We'll see!

Posted by: Whistlin' Past the Mable Orchard,

Maybe it's the fact that it's essentially the same band and tunes since '00 (despite Walt's less-than-coy marketing scheme). I guess most folks are just sayingto themselves, before plunking down the hare-earned beans, "been there, heard that (them)". Perhaps the boys need to see some empty seats to sharpen there touring acumen (I'm just sayin').

Posted by: Casual Fan, I'm concerned

Two years ago, when the Dan came through Orlando, they sold out in a day. Less actually.

Dan tickets have been on sale now for the show here this year, in a place half the size of the '07 locale, and if ticketmaster is any guide, they haven't even sold half the seats there, yet.

Curious as to people's thoughts? The three main things that, to me, could be driving lower sales are the general economic conditions, the fact that the show is on a Monday, and the fact that they've been here (or in Tampa) quite a bit in the last five years.

I'm just thinking that, overall, there aren't as many folks willing to shell out $250 for two tickets to an act they saw in the last two years on a Monday night. That's not me, of course. I'd pay more to catch them at 4 a.m. Sunday morning. But there's less of me than there used to be, it seems.

Wondering if anyone else is noticing lower sales for shows they are looking at.

JJ - yeah you're right... I was trying to calculate the result based on % of songs played from each album during 1993-2008 but I relied too much on mental arithmetic and hazy memories of what tracks are on each album.

Maybe I'll adopt Mark and Johnson's (from "Peep Show") approach and do a fucking kick-ass spreadsheet.

I'm very surprised that no one has yet mentioned Don & Walt's old buddy Chevy guest starring on "Chuck" the last couple weeks. And apparently everyone must have completely missed the fact that Chevy pulled some strings to bring D&W in for an uncredited guest appearance as a fictional musical duo in last night's season finale.

Hutch - they did Reelin' last year in a hybrid arrangement which started with Donald's AIA piano intro, then into the original Elliott Randall solo (well played by Jon)i nplace of the horns, then stuck close to the AIA version. Don't think they did it very often.

>Reelin' is probably the most well known song by SD and yet they only played it on one tour and even then it was a re-worked arrangement.
It's likely this could be the most requested song on the "takin' it to the seats" thing.
Doing the original arrangement with the guitar intro may be interesting. I think Jon would almost HAVE to play it note for note for it to be effective.

Even if it is Royal Scam, Aja, and Gaucho, and we've heard it all before, it seems like it would still cool to go to a "Royal Scam Show" (or whichever) and hear them play that album AS that album. Couple that with the subsequent release of a "Royal Scam Live," "Aja Live," and "Gaucho Live" trilogy (I know, I know, it will never happen), and you've got something even the cynics could love.

More great news, Thanks Jim. I saw one show at the CT, and forgot about missing the other. When the NYC folks took over our nice little world we had at CT came to an abrupt end. Used to be for $100 yearly membership you could e-mail your ticket requests (i.e. front row, dead center, Loge) for shows, and provided that they were being offered, you'd get them with no service fees. Then these guys took over, put you into a Ticketbastard pre-sale pool(although the TM charges were waived) and you took whatever popped up. Now, the membership isn't offered at all, only a newsletter type affair that alerts you to pre-sales. For my money, it's hard to beat those front row seats in the Loge, some of the best seats in the City I'd say, and now, a whole lot harder to get. Thanks again for the inside info.Maybe an AMEX or Citi pre-sale?

SkokieBob--

Just a quick update since it looks like you have been out of "The Loop".

The show at The Auditorium was two years ago and Steely Dan has since played on two separate occasions at the Chicago Theatre. For something like the past 18 months, the Chicago Theatre has been owned by a business partner of Steely Dan's manager who is also the owner of The Beacon in NYC. The Beacon is where Steely Dan has been playing many, many shows. (etc., etc., etc.)

For reasons involving those facts, I wouldn't look for Steely Dan to play any other venue in Chicago other than the Chicago Theatre this summer or for the foreseeable future--unless of course Steely Dan changes managers or there is some shuffle in venue ownership or the like.

Really great news, missed the show at The Auditorium last tour. My biggest worry is that they play out in 1st Midwest Ampitheater, Worst venue in Chicagoland IMO, would taint the luck of being one of the "big city multi night stand" locations. Here's hoping for downtown shows, say, Chicago Theatre?

What I'm hoping for is that either Don or Walt develop a bladder control problem and are forced to take a break after 90 minutes. A proper rock and roll show has an intermission. Good for concessions, good for my own galloping bladder control issues as well.

Next time I see a Pat Metheny concert I plan on wrapping a man-diaper around my nether regions.

Realistically, the best we can hope for is maybe a song from Walty and maybe a ressurrected chestnut or two.

Drew, I don't think we got 20 at Ruth Eckerd Hall last year, but I could very well be wrong about that. Regardless, whether it was 14 or 20, if there's no opening act, seems like maybe we might get a few more.

The last tour had closer to 20 songs (including opening and closing instrumentals) in the set with shows nearing the two hour mark. I actually prefer that to the two sets because there is more momentum in the show.

An observation: no supporting or intro act so far, it would seem. Hope this means two sets and a half dozen more songs, or at least a longer single set, with maybe 3 or 4 more than the standard 13 or so they have been playing the last couple of tours. Might be the room they need to add in a single from each.

Just a thought.

of course, Walter did Gaucho in 2008. the year was so crappy i've pretty much blocked it out of my mind but i do have hazy memories of watching Walter's take on the tune via YouTube. much prefer him on "Haitian Divorce"

but to be a true track to track album cover doesn't the original lead singer need to be performing it live?

Dean - I happen to know Walter's Doppleganger and that wasn't him.

Moray eel - Very funny about Martha Wainwright coming out to sing Dr. Wu. That is definitely something DF would do. Or maybe since he feels that "Wu" is outdated, he'll rework it like he did "Here At The Western World". And wouldn't that be a shame?

I came across this page: It's a tribute to Manny's Music store in NYC. It's closing after 50 years in business. This site has a bunch of videos of famous musicians giving their reaction to the closing of the store. In this particular video, bass player Will Lee gives his thoughts. If you notice, the interview was held at the Bitter End in NYC. And if you listen carefully, you'll here "Black Cow" playing in the back ground. Doesn't Pete Fogel work at the Bitter End? He's always representing!

Nice to see the Dan Fans are properly jaded.

Despite the positive news from SD.com, it seems to good to be true. I feel like Charlie Brown... and Lucy is getting ready to pull the football away again at the last second.

I have a feeling that even if Doctor Wu ends up getting the most votes, Fagen will probably bring out Martha Wainwright to sing it.

Wonder if the band ever gets tired of of playing Peg, Josie and Hey 19 at every show?

Well... anyway... kudos to Donald, Walter and the rest of the band for giving Dan Fans a reason to believe that they will be able to hear some of the deeper cuts in their catalog.

Fezo,

Gaucho (the song) was a staple of the 2008 tour. Walter sang it.

BTW, I didn't mention, while in line to buy my Dan ticket, I spotted Walter's Doppleganger. Not sure if it is the one who posts here, but this guy was the spitting image of Walt.

when, if at all, have our heroes done the title cut from Gaucho live?

It's no secret that Scam/Aja/Gaucho have been well covered live. This whole classic album thing is nothing more than a contrived gimmick if they don't use it on ones that have has a good number of songs yet to be done in concert.

they're just fucking w/ us.

They must think we're really stupid or somfin'.

It seems pretty obvious the 3 albums that will be played are Royal Scam, Aja & Gaucho. I believe the only song not played from these, or lost in my memory, is My Rival. It has been a long time since Sign in Stranger was last performed. With the recent addition of I've Got the News, the Aja album was completed live. Everything You Did completed Scam. I figure the album playing will be the 2nd half of the gig. 45 minutes of cuts-album-2 encores. As posted elsewhere, the other gigs-request format-if DF &/or WB are not comfortable playing a tune, they will not play that song. It would be cool if this was a call-in or pick-fan-from-crowd request gig. I think VH-1 (?) had this format a number of years ago with several artists. Regardless, as usual, I will attend several if not all NYC concerts. And again, I will request, should this forum in any possible way be read by those who can make a difference, the following songs I have not heard/seen performed live in the nearly 20+ years I've been fortunate to witness this great band/vocalist, starting with those Rock & Soul type gigs at the Cat & China Clubs & the Lone Star Roadhouse etc. etc.

Dr. Wu, Kings, King of the World, Throw Back the Little Ones, Almost Gothic.

There, I said it. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Posted by: The Power of Blue,

1. Boston Rag was sho' nuff prophetic. But it still took the recent, persistent, pointed, knife-edged complaining about the setlists to seal the deal to initiate and create change to the setlists, or at least the implied intent for the Dan to do so,

2. best jazz lp: YEAH, and Kulee Baba, Come Back Baby etc. That early/unreleased stuff has potential.

3. Entire LP sides would be cool, and I do think CTE would be the BEST candidate. It has several cuts such as King of the World and YGT that can be milked and improvised like the Phish and The Dead style. If you listened carefully at some shows last year, Show Biz Kids was tweaked with some improv.

4. I fugging ABHOR the idea of the "average" fan "voting" for the setlist. A few of the previous posts were correct in worrying about this voting actually making the setlist WORSE, by dominating it with Greatest Radio Hits. This setlist voting is best left in the hands of individuals who know better. You don't hand a three year old a loaded gun, or other than a knowledgeable Danfan the right to vote. My posse and I will will be watching these initial setlists CLOSELY, and will choose carefully whether or not to attend if and when the tour gets close to our town.

5. I have NO problem whatsoever if Solo Don and Solo Walt are added to the setlist mix. This would provide material from 14 LPs instead of the original 9 from the Dan, and much of which has NEVER been performed LIVE. Now THAT would be The Shit. It might even provide the impetus to follow the Dan around from venue to venue like Girl M., LWO and others. Well, maybe....don't want to get TOO carried away here....

6. Bottom line--the squeaky wheel GOT the grease, we are going to see something different. And as much as some do not want to admit it, we must give a big thumbs up, thanks, and "proper propers"-- there can be little doubt that the good suggestions, bitching and whining about the setlists here on the Blue, the past several years was heard and caused at least an attempt at change by the boys and their handlers to the Steely Dan Show.

The POWER of the Blue.

From my January 1, 2003 post. You can thank me now, although it did take Don and Walt 6 years to implement, sheesh:

Boston Rag, 2003 Tour Wish List

Happy New Year Dan Fans!

Wow! 2003 to bring a new CD and a possible tour!
I can't wait and I'm now in the habit of checking the ODP at least
twice a day!

Although it's great that there will be a possible tour this summer, I have to say the novelty of it has worn off a bit. After being starved in the 70's to see them in concert and then in the 80's to get a product out, the 90's, it goes without saying, was much more satisfying being a Dan Fan. I never thought I would see 4 Steely Dan tours in a 7 year span. So where I am I going with this?

Well, I want to see something different this time around. Something to spice up the Steely Dan live show. I remember about 10 years ago seeing an Elvis Costello show and he brought up a giant roulette wheel and invited audience members to write song names and post them up on the wheel. Then he pulled someone else out of the audience and asked them to spin the wheel. Elvis and his band broke into the song the wheel landed on. It was pretty cool. I can imagine the laughs that Donald and Walter could get setting this up. "It's time for the Wheely Dan portion of the show!".

The band Phish used to do a lot of cool things during their live shows, including playing a large chunk of one of their albums from start to finish. I'd love to see "Katy Lied" played in it's entirety from "Black Friday" to "Throw Back The Little Ones". Then in the next town, they could do the complete "Royal Scam" in the 2nd set. You would never know what you would get from show to show.

Just a couple of suggestions to punch it up a bit! However, they could come out and play anything and I'd be there drooling.

See you there this summer!

i agree with deano boston has to be extra special: katy lied and everything must go. then they can have a special release of katy lied to have the world hear what it should have sounded like.

if they really wanna freek people out (a trait they DO have in them - hey dan have some fun for once in your life!!) they should do freek night in boston (of course they gootta find anton to intro)

sail

dallas

fall 92

bear got you

kullee

cant write home

megashine city

etc

<<Don was never happy with the way the sound on Katy's final release...here's an opportunity to let the fans hear it the way you intended. One of the new ones would be great, but they probably don't qualify as "Classic" to the average fan.

Another stunt setlist I'd love is one featuring the solo work of Walt, with some Dan favorites thrown in as a bonus.

Well, if they bring out some of the oft requested songs (like Dr. Wu) for one night, they may include them on the sets in other cities. One would think that if they have the band ready to play all of the songs from three albums that they might play any of the songs from those three albums any night.

That being said, if they do Katy Live (that's what I'm calling it), I wanna be there. How much is a Greyhound ticket from Tennessee to LA?

Good point, SS. Also, don't forget Van Morrison is out there playing Astral Weeks live, speaking of quirky.

I'd love to hear Countdown, or Katy Lied. Don was never happy with the way the sound on Katy's final release...here's an opportunity to let the fans hear it the way you intended. One of the new ones would be great, but they probably don't qualify as "Classic" to the average fan.

Playing an entire album live might be in vogue right now.

Ben Folds Five reunited last September to play their final album, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner(1999). It was meant to be the first in a series of live shows by different bands doing one entire album called 'Front to Back' for Myspace.

On the album, one of the songs was a telephone message left on Ben Folds' answering machine by his father, mixed with the band playing some jazzy background music. Sure enough, to do it live they brought out Ben Folds' dad and he stood there and read a transcript of the lengthy message he'd left that morning on the answering machine.

Let's hope SD takes up the challenge and goes for something quirky.

I'm starting a "vote for The Boston Rag In Boston" campaign early. Remember 2000? I mean, they opened with it every night, but remember how fuckin' awesome it was to hear it in (near) Boston? Given the fact that they no longer play the big-ass sheds, this year will probably actually be IN Boston, making it even more appropriate.

So, I implore you, VOTE FOR THE BOSTON RAG IN BOSTON!

(This will be the first of several posts expressing how strongly I feel about this, apologies in advance.)

How about the fahkin' weather in New England, eh? I'm going outside.

Posted by: Hutch,

Reelin' is probably the most well known song by SD and yet they only played it on one tour and even then it was a re-worked arrangement.
It's likely this could be the most requested song on the "takin' it to the seats" thing.
Doing the original arrangement with the guitar intro may be interesting. I think Jon would almost HAVE to play it note for note for it to be effective. It really wouldn't be a problem to do that since his intro to DTMA is pretty much note for note.

I just noticed that the back up choir has a new member for the Europe shows:

I hate to be the one breaking bad news in room 18A but...

Hoops makes a very good point. Steely Dan has played 99% of Aja, Gaucho, EMG, 2VN and the Royal Scam over the years. These will be the five "whole" albums that they will choose from. So if you've seen this band a ton (like most of us here) you still won't be hearing anything new. I mean, if you really think that they're going to play Can't Buy A Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic(or even Katy Lied) in it's entirety, you're nuts!

Dean, interesting take. I'll add a couple of thoughts here about the voting scenario.

First, it might end up being sort of like the difference between polling voters, and those likely to actually vote. A large number of people going to one of the select Dan shows probably won't even know or bother to understand the voting option. Of those that do, a significant number will opt for the songs they know, which will be of the radio hit variety, I suspect.

Second, I wonder if the ticket brokers will bother to vote? Or give the option to the person buying the tix second hand? Wonder how that will work.

In the end, my suspicion is that the internet voting shows will most likely end up being greatest hits shows: Hey 19, Peg, FM, Deacon Blues, BB Sisters, Black Friday, Rikki, Kid C, Do It Again, Aja, My Old School. That's eleven right there.

But one can always hope that folks will hit "Third World Man" and the like by accident, right?

Very interesting stuff, fellow Danfans.

Very cool news, although I am sure some will use this as an excuse to bitch about something new, "We got screwed in Florida!" (fill in your city, state, region, etc.) or some other like nonsense.

I have to buy my tickets for St Augustine, tomorrow morning, and it did make me pause for a moment. But, I know I can't miss the show down the street from where I live, so I will happily go early to the box office and buy my ticket for the local gig. But, I am going to have to make a major effort to see one of the themed shows in one of the major markets, too. LA may have to be the themed show, for me.

Anyway, many of us here have been looking for a deeper cuts show, with some songs that have yet to be played, or have been rarely played. But, it is funny that many fans (and some critics) who go to Dan shows are disappointed they don't get to hear all the "hits".

The differentiated special set lists may work to appease both ends of the spectrum.

Classic Album (Plus) Night will be a deeper cuts show, at least in theory. But, given that Scam, Aja and Gaucho seem the likely candidates, plenty of hits, and much of the stuff they have been playing, will be part of the show and what sounds like a night for those looking for a deeper set list could end up being about the same mix as in past shows. The X-Factor is the "plus" If the Dan includes deeper cuts from other albums, then this really could be the show many have clamored for. X-Factor 2 would be if they played a different album than the ones mentioned.

Takin' It To The Seats" Internet Request Night, on its face, would look to shape up as the "greatest hits" concert the radio dan fans have been missing. Certainly Reelin and Do it Again, Riki, Hey 19, FM, etc will be the popular choices...right? Or will they? I think some certainly will, but that brings us to the X-Factor for this theme: This could be the test market for what Dan fans REALLY want. If there really are more closet Dan-heads that are looking for some of the little/never played tunes, this has the opportunity to turn into an "obscure fest". Remember, fans drive these kind of Internet polls. But, assuming they will tie it to a ticket sale, and there is no chance to vote multiple times, then I can't believe many of the obscurities will garner enough total votes to break into the lineup. (I wonder how many requests you get to make?) Anyway, even if it doesn't result in many "obscure" songs, if these songs gain enough votes, in total, it might send a message. What message, and to whom, is anyone's guess.

There is a possibility that both of these special set lists seem fairly similar to each other and pretty familiar to those who have been to past Dan shows.

Needless to say, tomorrow is Dan ticket day...and the NFL draft.

What a news letter! What a way to
start the weekend! I'm with you
hoops, "Katy Lied!" "Rose Darling",
"Wu", "Bad Sneakers". Hell, I'd even
take just side A. We have a radio
station here in LA that on Wednesdays
plays sides from LP's all day. Real
vinyl. You can even hear the needle.
This week on the veranda I heard,
Side A from "Katy Lied" followed by side
3 of "Quadrophenia", followed by side
B of "Breakfast In America" closed off
with "Johnny Cash Live At Folsom Prison"
side B. What a hoot and thought to
myself I would love to see a Steely Dan
show with complete sides of records.
And now this. I'm not holding my breath
for "Katy", but this will be blast this
summer. Last year after all those years
playing that horrific "hole" out in Irvine,
Steely Dan finally came back home to downtown
LA and what a reception they got from that
crowd. Remember, they played everything
from "Gaucho" that night sans "My Rival".
LA for sure and either Chicago or NYC
with my "Mad Money". This "Internet Request"
will be a hoot also, reminds me of when Elvis
Costello had the "Wheel Of Songs" night when
I lived in Chicago. Pure bliss. I'd still
love to hear Jon @ Walter have a go at "King
Of The World". On "Aja" nights they will
have to play "Deacon". Don't worry Bamma
& Florida, I bet you are going to get some
fun warm up shows before they hop the pond.
"Promotions, packages, and other sundry goodies"?
Can't wait! But spill the beans! We need to make
plans!

Have a safe & "warm" weekend all

BTW:

I think the three albums will be Gaucho, Aja and Scam. I believe that the only tracks they haven't had in a show off of these albums are "My Rival" and, arguably, "The Fez" which they have done as an instrumental.

So I am excited, but given those are probably the albums, I don't think I would go as far as to say HFS.

I'd love for them to do my favorite Dan Studio album live, "Katy Lied", but I don't think they will.

hey, i like this!

I wonder how the shows will turn out. Will most ticket holders vote for a greatest hits show?
That's probably what the majority of them will want.
On the other hand, how many people will actually take the time to vote? Will it just be the hardcore fans?

Either way, kudos to Steely Dan for changing it up, and for giving Boston some love (although Boston is by far the most deserving of those cities for having the best crowds year after year :) )

I also wonder which three classic albums. My guesses based on past playlists would be Scam, Aja, and Gaucho.

My computer crashed a few weeks back and I lost a lot of rare mp3 tracks including SD's "Sail the Waterway". I managed to recover "Dallas". I've been scouring the net looking for copies of the single or even that European EP that both were on. Does anyone here know of any way to legally obtain a copy of "Sail the Waterway"

I'm sorry if it's mistaken for Steely Dan. I mean let's face it, they ain't never gonna be that good no matter how they try. They could get Jeff Baxter and wire his brain to Larry Calton and it gonna be that good!

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll give StAlphonso yet another reason to run down to CVS Pharmacy for a bottle of Excedrin.

they shall live off the fat of the land, the hay in the loft.

never more to sow and grow, in the studio.

what does this all mean?

Hi Hoops and Dantastic Folks,

I'm a long-time Dan Fan, first-time Blue Booker. I'm planning on grabbing 2 or 3 tix and making a roadtrip around the Durham show. If plans fall through, what's the best way to sell my tickets to real fans (for face value of course) or anyone else? Has anyone dealt with Stubhub or similar sites with positive results? It would stink to miss the show, but also to eat the tickets!

Thanks

http://crawdaddy.wolfgangsvault.com/Article/The-Return-of-Spanky-and-Our-Gang.html?page=2&cpage=1

In September, Spanky and Our Gang performed a house concert for her friend Kelly Carlin McCall. Kelly is George’s daughter, and Spanky and George had been close since her Chicago days. When the iPhone was released in 2007, George made his first call to Spanky. The house concert was the first time Spanky had seen Kelly since George’s funeral. Using the driveway as a stage, they sang and played to an enthusiastic crowd that included Denny Dias, from Steely Dan, and his wife.

Just finished reading this and came here to link to it but found that someone (calling himself Dinky) had beat me to it.

"WTF is up with the trickling of dates?"

Huh?

This is all pretty much the same as some other spurts of touring since summer 2006. Unlike 1993-2003, I hold that Steely Dan has just been on one big long tour since Milwaukee 2006 with breaks in between. So if they don't hit your town in the coming months, they will sooner or later--even if "later" slips into 2010.

As you maybe have read in the news stories about Irving Azoff and his plans for Ticketmaster, etc. Music acts don't make money from recordings anymore. They need to keep touring to make money.

Sooo...

The dates appear as contracts get signed, as venues know the holes in their schedule, etc. They see how the tickets are selling to see if they should do a lot of shows in one area or only a few. This is usual.

They can start by doing a short leg in one area as a warm up. Examples: in 1994, this was Japan. In 2003, this was the California wine country and state fairs.

Then they hit a big area.

Maybe they switch continents.

As alluded to in recent items here and in the Dandom Digest and elsewhere, here's the way I see it, likely what's happening and probably what will come.

They will do some warm up dates "touring the Southland" in the first part of June--the equivalent of the Wine Country/State Fair thing, for example. AL, NC, FL, etc. If you can hit a date then, then you will probably get to hear something on those early dates that will later get dropped.

Then for late June they will go to Europe. (Dates already showing up.)

They will probably be done with Europe after three or four weeks. (I mean how long can they stay there?)

Mid-July, they come home to the USA, rest up a week or two, then they hit the main USA part of the touring late July or Early August. If they make it a two-month tour in the USA (and Canada), look for them to take a week off in late August or around Labor day, hit the road after and wind down in mid September or so. If there's only one leg, then they wind down around Labor Day. So far we have the mid-August date in Atlanta. Chastain always has to get their season ticket holders the advance info so that's why we are seeing that date now; we'll have to wait for the rest. Ditto for the fests.

With the Beacon rehabbed, I'd place my bets on another stand at the Beacon around late July, early August. If they play dates in the midwest, I'd wager they will play the Chicago Theatre.

That's how it's shaping up. Not too different from previous years (since 1993-1994). And I will say it again, 1993-94 was basically one tour. They did mostly the Northeast and Great Lakes in '93, revisited some of those in '94 and finished on the West Coast in 1994.

The one thing I dislike is when some get all whiny and disturbed that they are being "fucked over" (the words used last year by some) because no date in their area has been announced YET. (No one has done that hereon the Blue yet, but others have in private emails send to me via the Dandom Digest--so please don't think I'm talking about anyone on the Blue, etc, etc.) Be patient.

So geez...relax and chill. When I buy tickets I wait until right near the event. That's the way to go in a lot of situations.

I'm very pleased about one thing. They WON'T play Milwaukee Summerfest! (Nothing personal, Kid Clean! In fact you have made it worth while in the past.) At Marcus Amphitheater, I simply hate the shed, hate the crowd, hate the sound, hate the management, hate the seats and hate the security. I sure hope they don't pick up Marcus later. Absolute worst!

Fly low and be cool,

Jim

WTF is up with this trickling in of dates?

One date here and another there. I don't think I've ever seen that before. I know the last tour they added dates toward the end that brought them around these here parts more times. But this one date piddling in is getting on my nerves.

Get the bulk of the tour dates down and post them. Cut out this crap they are pulling now. Very unprofessional IMO, despite my being a DanHead.

Any rumors on more of the us dates? I hate to blow the wad going to see them down south if they're gonna be doin' at least one midwest show.

Recently 'revisited' the DF solo tour from March '06. Krantz really was a perfect fit for that band. Much more so than when he toured with them in '96, although I have to admit, most of my brain cells were stompin' down the avenue back then.

When you go to Bard College take rte 103 south out of the campus for about a mile and you will come to Barrytown Rd. Turn right and go all the way down to the railroad tracks (1/2 mile). There is a tiny RR station in the woods with a bronze "Barrytown" plaque on it. The columned structure makes for a great picture.

You can see by what they carry that they come from Barrytown.

Lee, I completely agree with you about Ruth Eckerd. I've also seen them at Ice Palace (yuck) and the Ford Amphitheatre (double yuck) and Ruth Eckerd is infinitely better. Saw them there last year and they seemed to genuinely be especially enjoying themselves. I live in Orlando and may choose to go to Ruth Eckerd over seeing them literally just up the road from where I work, its that nice a place for a show.

One more date for Florida, at Ruth Eckerd in Clearwater, on Friday, 6-12. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, 5-1, and facility members can buy a day or two sooner.

By the way, I've seen all three SD shows at Ruth Eckerd, including two nights in a row in 2007, and I've seen all the other 6 or 7 shows in the Tampa Bay area, and the sound at Ruth Eckerd is as close to perfect as it could be. SD sounds AMAZING in that place!

on the sublime Soundboard recording of Bonnie
Raitt doing "Dirty Work" at Shorline in '06!
It's definitely a soundboard and not an audience
recording. Pehaps an "ALD". I hope that means
that perhaps soon we will get the entire show
from the sondboard. That night's version of
"Deacon" is one of the best I have ever heard.
And I have heard alot of live versions over the
years. What a trifecta that was in 2006 -

Soboba - Two sets and "Dr Wu" at soundcheck
Bayside - Last two show set ever? By the sea
Shoreline - Bonnie! - Those San Fransisco nights

I see it's not looking good for SoCal shows this
year. But then again NY flights are dirt cheap!

Here's to that Shoreline Sounboard seeing the light

PS- Thanks to the "b-mann" for all of the goodies.

Regarding the Danfests in Orlando--or elsewhere:

Still waiting to hear back from a couple of people on what will hopefully be a unified communication method that will keep the Greater Dandom in on the loop.

There are a couple of dozen people last counted on the Orlando Danfest list. The Blue isn't the best place for Danfest discussion since you only get a handful of people headed to one show or another. I'd save your Danfest discussion for a week or so from now when things get finalized in general.

In the mean time, here's the latest from the Dandom Digest for April 12-17 which just mailed a few minutes ago.

Interesting note on the Orlando show:

The Bob Carr Theatre has a max seating capacity of 2518. Tickets are $55 to $110. Assuming they sell out and that the average price is around $80, the most they can generate is just over $200,000. I guess they could sell some swag and maybe get a chunk of the concessions, but that just cannot be that much, especially in Orlando on a Monday night.

Its not bad, I suppose, but I would have figured they need to clear a bit more than that to make it worthwile.

Okey dokey, time to pokey.

The Dan visiting Orlando again and this time at the more low key Bob Carr Theatre. Seen Swan Lake there, but it blew because they used recorded music and the staging was poor. Still, a good place for a Dan show, IMO. Expansive seating -- not as intimate as Ruth Eckerd Hall, but way better than the sports arena notion.

Beersy - so nice to hear you once more...of course I'm still bangin' on...what, me leave the Blue and give up showbizness? Unthinkable.

I have witnessed many instances of great spirit here in the last 10 days in my earthquake-ravaged Abruzzo, especially these courageous women have kept their families together. Without homes, without those small possessions and comforts, without anyyhing but the tired old housedress dress they fled their houses in...these strong and gentle women have kept this little town of mine going, cooking over open fires, washing clothes in the ancient fountain basin, overcoming their own fears to keep these little family units together. I'm not a religious man, far from it, but when I see them saying rosaries at night in little groups after everyone has gone to sleep, well, it makes me wonder...

Posted by: Rajah,

The piano intro on, "I Idolize You," has got to be James Beard, witness with your ears if you will the touch on his entrance to, "Door Number Two," in comparison. The keystrokes are unmistakable. So, let's place it circa 2006 or so. It's obviously Keith on battery, Walter doing his best Grant Green on guitar. I like Donald's wide open and snide vocal rendering, yes, akin to, "Rhymes," in that sense, which I thought was quite a refreshing departure from his controlled Steely Dan and solo work. If Jelly Roll Morton is indeed one of Donald's great influences, he shows the chops on this one.

I don't know if you get anything but BBC America in the U.S. but there a singer I think Steely Dan should consider as a substitute back-up, she's a dowdy old maid from Scotland named Susan Boyle. As unfortunate a face as the Creator could fashion but when she sang the other night the few hairs I have left on the back of my head stood up. She does need a serious makeover however...

Madman,

Good job.

For what it's worth, here's Mel's version of Walk Between the Raindrops:

http://mp3.rhapsody.com/mel-torme/in-the-studio-and-in-concert

Pretty funny shit.

Casual Fan, I had a brief conversation with my "kind of" contact for the Amphitheater. Her real connection is she works with a sound company that often does the sound (or handles some aspects of it) for many local concerts. It isn't likely that the company is involved with the Dan, who I would guess do all their own sound (she's checking, though). But, I have one more (very minor) card up my sleeve, that I will play soon.

I'll do what I can.

As for a mini-meeting of Dan Fans, I don't really have the time, or inclination, to host a real Dan Fest, but there are a few bars/bar restaurants, within a short drive from the Amphitheater. If anyone is coming, I can make recommendations and would love to meet for a drink, or several.

My email address is where it should be, on this post.

Levon Helm is bringing his band to the Chicago Theatre on June 9. The Chicago Theatre is run by the same folks as the Beacon, so it's not surprising. Of course, I certainly won't expect Donald to be part of the show in Chicago.

There's a pre-sale tomorrow for those registered with the Chicago Theatre and MSG entertainment's newsletters (covers the Beacon, MSG, WaMu (or whatever) Theatre, Radio City, Paramount, Chicago Theatre).

All points bulletin (APB) to those in the "know" (and again, Hoops, thanks for your sole response); why is it that Atlanta is the "put-upon" concert site (does not matter the venue) whereupon every frickin' year, one has to buy the "package" of concerts to get dibs on the early tickets?...in the realm of things, the St. Augustine date conundrum is a minor annoyance...capice? I'm assuming Hoops simply took the opportunity to give the community a reminder. I would certainly NEVER ask for anything more than what I paid from a fellow Blue contributor. I'm fairly sure Hoops knows that.

BTW, back to the confusion on the sale date for St Augustine tickets. SteelyDan.com still says tickets are on sale Friday, April 24th.

Staugamphitheatre.com says tickets are on sale Friday, April 25th (of course April 25th is not a Friday)

I went to the Amphitheater ticket office today, and they told me tickets go on sale Saturday, April 25th.

I will continue to try and solve this mystery.

But first, another cocktail!

re: Donald singing I Idolize You, an Ike and Tina Turner track.

if SD would cover whateva pop tune and record an entire L-bum, I'd be game.
because they twist it so it sounds SD, which means an extra dimension for the tune they are covering, and a fresh angle from SD perspective.

hell, I can ever hear Donald sing "on a dark desert high way....."

has it been done here before?
guess so.

a Top Ten of songs you'd like to hear SD (and or the Breadline Orchestra) do on stage or in studio, preferably both:

(random order)

• Hotel California (Eagles)
• Can We Still Be Friends (Todd Rundgren)
• I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2)
• My Resistance Is Low (Hoagy Carmichael)
• In The Ghetto/Always On My Mind (Elvis Presley)
• Georgy Porgy (Toto)
• Minuano (Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays/Kurt Elling)
• It's Different For Girls (Joe Jackson)
• Song For You (Leon Russell/Ray Charles)

Hoops,

Just in case there might have been a miscue, I think neither Dean nor I was speaking in terms of ticket resales or anything of the like. I just got the impression that he, living in St. Augustine, might have some sort of an "in" to get great seats as they became available. I dunno', maybe some person working there having first choice or something similar. I was only saying that if he did have such a connection to get good seats then I'd love to be included for me and whatever date I can scrounge up that evening. Didn't mean to imply otherwise and sorry if I was unclear.

This time of year, when tour tickets sales start, we always have a routine reminder that selling, offering or otherwise explaining or suggesting how to buy scalpers tickets is not allowed on any internet resource associated with Dandom.com This includes the BlueBook, the Dandom Digest and the Danfest Lists All are welcome to sell and offer tickets at face value plus any fees from the official ticket sales agency (typically Ticketmaster and the like) for a show. Exceptions are made for tickets sold for legitimate charity fundraising purposes. I don't charge over face-value plus box office fees and in fact, that's one of the motivations behind this site. This place is out of friendship--not making a buck. Thanks.

Alternately, seriously consider the other Rodgers, Nile Rodgers of Chic fame.

2) Jeff Lynne - can't really go wrong trying Jeff. Anyone who has worked with various Beatles, Dylan and Roy Orbison knows a few things. He might be able to get Keltner to go two drummer with Keith. I'll bite my tongue re: the whole ELO thing.

Hey Danners,

Donnie and I have picked up on your recent conversation about Klein and/or other producers "doing" our new studio work, if we ever get rythm tracks and such figured out...

The three we're gravitating towards at this point are varied, and and diverse. Give us your take on what the new Dan record would sound like if produced by one of our final three:

1) Prince Nelson Rodgers (thank Goodness and Brubeck, he's given up that crazy "symbol" thingy...How the Hell do you SPELL that?!)

2) Jeff Lynne (before you judge, both Herington and Krantz say we should give this cat a chance...both of them are old friends of TPetty, of course--ever notice the resemblance?)

AND

3) Ray Benson (His arrangements of a big ol' 14-piece swing band, albeit a "Western" variation of style and instrumentation, has certainly caught her eye; we also noticed that he recently bought the rights to both "Trouble in Mind" and "Bring it on Down to My House", and we're intrigued, y'know.

Thanks in advance for your input, and don't forget: but lots of beer and T-shirts at our deal this Summer, eh? Don needs new glasses, and I've gotta buy little Kawai a new board...big waves off the West Beach this Fall, for sure.

Posted by: Rajah,

You're kidding about pre-recorded tracks on tour. This would be the end of the world as we know it...

Steely Dan made their bones in L.A., they wrote great travelogues of the environs. They lived in the valley at first, a squalid little apartment complex, hung out with the Laurel Canyon people with whom they never really quite fit in. They weren't hippies, they weren't into country, folky rock. They were bebop kids. Then they lived at the beach, something everyone should experience for a time. They split the town when it was time but the period of readjustment to NYC wasn't an easy one. They lost their center for quite a while and when they came back, they continued to write about L.A., a place few can endure for a lifetime but a place where few forget their experiences. Southern California audiences still love Steely Dan but the feeling isn't quite mutual.

Posted by: crystal Blue persuader, every green field, in every town....

You know something. We should not give a whit whether or not there is pre-recorded music used at the Steely Dan Show. You are there for a "live" Dan experience.

What F-ing difference should it make? With the Dan's tight precision and adherence to their studio records, lack of improvisation etc. during their live performances, "pre-recorded" material would be almost imperceptible. And I would especially welcome it if it would help the Dan to vary the setlist and do MORE songs. The set list repertoire might approach 50 songs which could be plugged in and out, interchanged etc. on any given night. A "modular" approach to concert. Yeah.....that's the ticket! I say, Bring IT On.

They just MIGHT be able to do Kulee Baba, 2nd arr, whatevah. Think of the variety and musical power the Dan could unleash on stage, while making more profit for themselves. It's a win-win proposition.

BTW, the reason the Dan does not go West, is that there are few profit-centers out there. Conversely, they can still nearly fully pack most venues in the East, and they sell-out four or five shows in NYC every year.

It has been said by no less an authourity than Rajah and others that Steely Dan is an "LA" band. Well, musically that may be so. The truth is that Steely Dan's BREAD is buttered EAST of the mighty "Mississipp".....

In the March 2009 issue of Performing Musician magazine is a nice interview with Walter Becker and Jon Herington.

Pages 32 to 38, nice photos.

Couple good Walter quotes:
On touring -
"I don't go sightseeing anymore. You can go sightseeing anytime, but you are only ever going to have so many shots at playing to a big audience. I try to conserve my energy and focus on that."

On future plans -
"It's like they say in Japanese politics: 15 minutes into the future is total blackness."

And it seems from the bands perspective they are mixing up the song list a lot during the tours. They are not bored.

Posted by: Inge N. Sanning, Inside info turned outside ditto

The "some very exciting developments are in the works" on the front page of steelydan.com as well as the latest official newsletter might point in the right direction, but on top of the info here on the Blue that

a) The Steely Dan tour '09 will be using pre-recorded music instead of live players. (See post dated April 12, 2009, 22:34:07 ET)

b) The band walked out and now a roadie is just going to play cuts off of the original albums from an empty stage. (See post dated April 13, 2009, 08:16:59 ET)

I also have to inform you that the worries about Steely Dan not making it out west this time around might turn out to be very, very real. Sort of.

In these days of maximizing the concert revenues in the shortest time while ducking the sharps and blanks fired by the crashing music business, there's supposedly a SECOND Steely Dan taking care of the places west of the Mississippi.
It's made up of a bunch of good but not great musicians handpicked by a distant cousin of the guy working as apprentice over at a sub-management whathaveya somehow connected to Donald & Walter.

This second "Steely Dan" is named Stole 'N Dun and fronted by onetime aspiring studio musician Dun Matthews thanks to having a short and scary affair with a seamstress named "Anita", who in turn said "hello" to either Donald or Walter or both in an upmarket bar in downtown Atlanta back in THAT summer of 1989.

Hey, it's only Rock N Roll!

Cindy's switch from SD to Broooce of course has all to do with what's been reported here on the Blue. Cindy = integrity = respect!

See you at the shows!

Hey Panera boy, I guess people by their writing style. You get that from teaching all that. That said, perhaps I've narrowed it down.

You are either

1) a rock impresario known best for his 50s and 60s work, and, in recent years, for wearing large Afro fright wigs and increasingly bizarre behavior.

OR....

2) you are some middle-aged guy who sends Steely Dan fans custom CDs mailed with shipping labels that are computer-printed, hand-cut, and trapezoidal or even tetragonal in shape.

Hoops - thank you for your response.

re: ATL "package" deal for SD concerts, it's been the same nonsense for who knows how long; ATL and a few other places are held hostage by some apparent a-hole promoter (whatever) who holds exacts an "Eagles" type of deal...early tik thingy of having to buy tiks for muy concerts to get early pickens. Puhleez, can someone shed some light on this? Would someone with the "inside" skinny on the tik-biz tell me why ATL is always hood-winked into this pack-deal (I have a small "package" so I'm particularly senstive to this).

Alright, so I see they have a show scheduled for St. Augustine. I'm hoping that means that another Ruth Eckerd Hall show is in the works. Saw them there last year and its just a great place to see a show. Having caught them in the amphitheatre setting, the domed sports venue setting, the big house setting (Hard Rock in Orlando), and then the what I will call arts-house setting (Ruth Eckerd), I have to say that the smaller arts-house gig from last year was by far the most entertaining.

But if St. Augustine is it, then I shall brush up on my 16th and 17th Century Spanish and trudge on up.

I am outraged to hear that the SD tour will be using pre-recorded backing tracks instead of live musicians. Why should I part with my hard earned cash to sit through what is virtually 'Don and Walt do karaoke '?
And now apparently they won't even be leaving their 'rock star' mansions but will be feeding their 'live vocals' via the internet to be blended into the pre-recorded backing by a member of their management team with no sound engineering experience whatsoever.
No doubt if they are feeling a little under the weather there is also a chance that the vocals will be passed through 'pitch correction' software.
And somehow, in their absence, the audience is supposed to be happy with giant cinematic images of their heroes SEEMINGLY YOUNGER THAN THEY REALLY ARE NOW.
First digital music. And now this.

Found a DVD of "Bright Lights, Big City" at Big Lots for 3 bucks! Something to add to the collection. Actually I was pretty excited to find that.

Quite a bit of SD is played on "Morning Joe" on MSNBC. Reelin' is played a lot when they go to commercial break.
Maybe rush should play some SD on his show. You know... add a little class to the show!

I got the same scuttlebutt that you did about using prerecorded accompaniment this tour to reduce cost. Word I got, though, was that the entire show was going to be recorded with only cardboard cutouts of Donald and Walter on stage, and that the band got pissed when they realized they were laying down tracks that would put them out of a job so the band walked out and now a roadie is just going to play cuts off of the original albums from an empty stage. The good news, though, is that ticket prices are being cut 10%.

Why would anyone be offended if a SD song is used in a radio show?
It's really good exposure.
If it's the "wrong" show for this unlucky perp, it may well be the "right" show for others.
It takes a really small mind to fish for support here, like SD is the property of movealong.com? What a pea sized brain!

B Federer: The Breadline Orchestra '09 offended????? My understanding is that in order to maximize the rent monies raised this tour, SD will be going the route of many Broadway productions that have dumped their pit orchestras: SD will be using pre-recorded music instead of live players. How can recordings be offended?

The Arts section of today's New York Times had a long piece about which show long time Deadheads consider to be the best Grateful Dead show ever. Now even if you aren't a Deadhead (and keep in mind this forum traces its lineage to rec.music.gdead), the piece is very interesting and much translatable to the context of the loyal Dandom. The reasons given for why various shows were chosen were amusingly interesting, with the band's tape archivists and engineers begging to differ from the fans and the band's *surviving* members saying they only remember periods and tours and not any particular show. Of course, there is Walter's famous quote from the second Roseland show in 2003: "This could very well be the best Steely Dan show ever."

"Circus Money" is still coming? Of course! I STILL get off on it big time!

Our boys are playing less than a mile away from where I live, at the St Augustine Ampitheater.

I was there for the first time, last weekend, when I saw Chicago (decent). Nothing special about the venue, except that it is small, for an ampitheater. I think capacity is 4,000 total, maybe 3,500 seats. I may see Joe Cocker next week, if so, I will scout it better. (also saw Leon Russel last week, at a Rhythm and Ribs festival, for $5 Leon and band were pretty damn good)

Speaking of Al Green, i know this isn't all that impressive to some, but my brother was a studio guitarist on the album Back Up Train, and maybe one other. Old Al Green is awesome.

Hoops,

Now, THAT was a refreshing bit out of your everyday, brother. I agree, wholeheartedly.

After what David Foster did to Chicago, and Billy Joel's albums without Phil Ramone (Dan Kortchmar? PLEASE say it ain't so!), it's a good question.

I'll agree that Lundgren is not the guy; Larry Klein is good, but...am I the only one that thinks that he and Donald have never hit it off?

And so, in the middle of my moment of trying to get my friends here to check out my latest endeavour in cheap-ass Texas talk radio on 1230AM, Seymour, I'll go way out on a limb for this tidbit (and you can call in about this, too--let's make the show All About Dan, please!):

I think it'd be interesting to see what Prince, Jeff Lynne, or Ray Benson would do with a bunch of new Steely Dan tunes.

There, brother, stir that and shoot it back at me, eh? So lovely to read the Real You again, Jim. I love you, man! Selah...

Okay,

I broke out the DF box recently and have been playing it alot.

I've given "Rhymes" over a dozen spins in the past couple of weeks and I like it less and less, the only Becker and/or Fagen tune I can say that about.

Now I *am* thrilled DF gets to pay tribute to Al Green because clearly Donald thinks the world of him.

But aside from the idea of a nod, if you take away Donald's vocals, it's got little if any trademark Fagen sound. The music and production makes it sound like the theme music from the next upcoming edition of of C.S.I. It has all this oversize, artificial attitude to the production that it overpowers the real attitude in Fagen's voice. Even if it's a great C.S.I. theme, the over-the-top production dwarfs Donald's vocals? In short, it's like Donald is providing guest vocals to someone else's track. And what this track seems to try and attempt had already been achieved much more successfully on other Fagen and Steely Dan tracks.

Clearly Donald's proud of it or he wouldn't have used it to kick off the CD of bonus tracks, but I sadly have to say, there's finally an SD-related tune I don't care for.

Of course, I'm open to someone persuading me otherwise. Like I said, I finally persuaded myself that the right outside producer might be good with Steely Dan. But it's not Todd Rundgren.

As far as Al Green goes, I think "Take Me To The River" is musically a better version of "Rhymes". A little too similar in my book.

I'm very unfamiliar with the board, as John Wolfe himself usually does this duty, but he's too rich and unavailable in regards to tomorrow morning....

It'll be rough and no-good, by our "talk radio" standards here on the Blue, but I am tied-in, at this point, like that poor ship captain on the Indian Ocean this week, for good or ill.

THERE WILL BE NEWS ABOUT THE DAN TOURING BROADCAST ON THE SHOW. It won't be anything you all don't know about already, but I'll put it there to let you know that it's me, Bobbo, one of your own, flying my own Dan flag.

You can catch it online, at 'gowolfe.com' (just toggle around until you see a "LISTEN LIVE HERE" button), and we'll have a toll-free number, too. Yes, fellas, and girlies, you can call in for free. Appreciate your hanging about, for sure; thanks in advance. Out.

Hey this all sounds great. We can have our Steely Dan sooner AND later.

For a long time I've held that Steely Dan didn't need an outside producer because basically, through the years, Becker and Fagen are most of all about a certain kind of production. Fagen's "Rhymes" (produced by Todd Rundgren) didn't change my opinion, but "Circus Money" got me thinking Larry Klein would be a great producer to bring in for a Steely Dan studio album if there ever was another. I especially liked an interview where Becker talked about the relationship Klein and Becker had. Sounded very laid back and natural.

I prefer the Perrier Jouet Brut '89, an impertinent little vintage. Let's take out a few Euros for a case or two before we pass the bucks on down the line.

There are 1.6 people in the Abruzzo region. Its governor drags down a higher salary than the Governor of California, a state of more than 36 million but closer to 42 million counting all the unregistered guests. That's Italian politics. Americans complain of big government but what goes on here is heinous.

You guys should know that the massive and impotent government that rules in Italy talk a good game but rarely delivers anything on time. The hospitals have run out of supplies, it's been three days now. Silvio Berlusconi is a master at telling people what they want to hear. He said the other day in Aquila, "no one will be left behind." Sound familiar? He's George Bush with a better vocabulary. Then there's all the thievery in government. Before money trickles down to the neediest, six levels of government official have taken their slice. It's a crime.

My thoughts are with all the families of the victims and all those ones that lost their home and sleeping now in tents.

Italy's prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, compared the actual situation of the rescapies with " just a simple camping holiday ".

These words coming from from the mouth of a fascist is not a real surprise but what a shame!.

BTW: Hubby said to say Hi and he was glad you were OK. Stay safe.

Aw, shucks, darlin', you should know it's gonna take more than the Northridge and Abruzzo quakes to topple this Turban. But I'm gratified by your concern.

The populace is now waiting for another quake, the cu de gras. People here are so superstitious, Italians may be 97% Catholic but scratch the surface and their pagan roots show right through. Disease, disasters, accidents carry much more of a sense that they are being punished by the gods for some undefined wrongs.

Who me? Thank you for caring, sweetheart, I'm moved deeply, I figured you were hoping I'd be buried under a pile of 5th century BC rock by now. No, I'm fine, our 15th century church lost its facade though and the castle tower now tilts some but, naw, the Northridge quake in '94 was worse, although this one accelerated dramatically over 20 or so seconds. Whole towns are buried, gone, the death toll is at 100 which is already 25% worse than Northridge. Northridge hit 6.7, this one is estimated at 6.3 but duration, angle of the quake and this acceleration thing also figure in.

Natural disasters just seem to follow me around...

re- Becker production influence

I do think he might have added an edge that seems to be missing from Morph.....having said that I think they album was overly criticized when it came out ...particualry by Cromelin (once a big ally of the Dan).... bright Nigthgown is one of my favourtie Fagen tracks though...funky....and fuckin funnnny!

re- I have a theory about the Morph concept too- ie. it is an homage to cool dj's...ala Mort Fega etc

re- Bread, Pablo Cruise etc: the suck! just my humble opinion....I'll take Stevie, Jeff Beck, Stealers Wheel...Doobies anyday heck even 3 Dog Night.....but 70's pop is great...something about that nice analog production...even early Billy Joel is decent....
re-substance abuse-we've all abused something or other in our lives...but I can't recall any specific stuff on Fagen except cigarettes...and maybe he dropped acid circa '70...Becker appears to have had more serious trouble but appears to have made a big turn circa '83...and returned to the music scene with that great China Crisi album in late '84...alhtough becker's lyrics do seem to be more druggy than his Steely lyrics...Beckers almost a cross between Jimmy Buffet and Tom Waits....hahha

Posted by: Rajah,

Shoes and socks say nothing about performance. They speak to how well-heeled a man is, if you'll pardon the pun.

Pablo Cruise had a nice Latin groove, they were OK.

Well Rajah, a man's choice and condition of shoes and socks reveal much about his performance in the bedroom. Very important, not to be overlooked...

And perhaps I was prepubescent at the height of Bread's popularity. However, later hits like "Last Train to St. Tropez" also had an appeal. And I'm not ashamed to admit I loved Pablo Cruise.

Well, Hoopsie, thank you, but it's understandable, or is it understandible when the great and powerful Rajah shows his ass that folks wanna jump all over it. I know I would. [rim shot] Thank you. I must be coming out of my depressive state...oh, these are the jokes, folks, help a brotha out wontcha...

As for Bread, Ms. Erzulie, oh they were so weak, David Gates had a sweet voice but only a pre-pubescent could relate to Diary or I Wanna Make it With You. What righteous woman would wanna, "make it," excuse me here beforehand, withat limp-dick motherfucker singin' that song? Bread made America sound like NIN. Now, "I wanna fuck you like and animal," now that was a rock n roll lyric for the ages.

Yes, I has gots Bread's first two records...but I was 14 or 15, still pure, still innocent and still romantic if you can believe it.

The person who brought up this whole "definately" thread should be given a proverbial smack. When you nit-pick like that, it really cools anyone from having interest in posting anything of substance. As joke it's lame--and if you are serious go get a life--either way get a life.

About the same day, someone kindly sent me a private email about another European concert date that wasn't posted anywhere (not sure if it is now). When I saw the nit-picking about spelling, I sighed to myself and decided to skip it--why bother if people are going to discuss grammar instead of a the fact there is another delightful SD show coming up.

Email me if you are headed to Europe and want to know about the show.

If you really want to help the Blue, please don't respond to this thread in any way any more.

Thanks,

Posted by: Rajah,

Definately is definitely wrong. But it looked right. You live with another language for a while and you begin to lose the feel for your own. Those are my excuses. But like it or not, people do measure you by your usage and grammar. Like when a woman looks at a man's shoes and fingernails.

Don't and ain't have become accepted alternatives to doesn't and isn't. I am persuaded these changes have their roots in rural usage, both from black and white folks. I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. English is a lot grittier than it was fifty years ago. It's all good.

Morph casts a pallor over the record, lugubrious and eerie. Strange days indeed.

Hi there: I Saved Latin:

Three random responses to your post.

1. I am wondering, poster, what is YOUR relation to drugs? I really wish to discuss it in a public forum, in order to validate your existence. I think that it’s unfair that more drugs have not been shared over the years from the “haves” to the “have nots.” Don’t you think that’s the REAL issue?

2. We planted a mic on the persona in “Things. . . “ and overheard discussion that the whole band dabbles in mind-over-matter phenomena, and is highly concerned, in general, in all things spiritual.

3. I believe that if we revisit the metaphor that Morph is not unlike a giant Garfield balloon at Macy’s parade, ala Rajah I believe, then if the cat had been any tighter, it would have exploded all over the place leaving spectators communicating in helium talk for the rest of the afternoon. Security Joan is simply a master work and so funked-up that I wonder what would happen if it were even more concentrated. Should the groove be even more funked? No. Fagen didn’t cross the line to overfunking Security Joan. But you want more funk, yes? Bright Nightgown perpetuates itself, yes. It is symbolic of what may be an everlasting state of worry or concern that won’t go away; it speaks to the overall climate of society. The lesson to be learned is you can’t hide from them (or it) if, indeed, they have it in their plans to come and GET YOU! So have courage. --Jayme

I wasn't really aware of this link. Gary Katz co-produced Diana Ross's 1983 album "Ross":

It also looks like Donald wrote one of the songs ("Love Will Make It Right")... originally from the Nightfly sessions?

And that even Michael McDonald got in the game ("That's How You Start Over"): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YF_FHGUhOc

Three random things:

1. The Dan have obviously put out their fair share of drug related songs over the years. I seem to remember reading about Walter's abuse of various substances around the Gaucho era, but what do we know about Donald's relation to drugs? Any links would be much appreciated.

2. In "Things I miss the most" Maestro Fagen - as you all know - delivers the line "I'm learning how to meditate, so far so good". I was wondering if either of the guys have ever talked about doing meditation in real life, and if so; under which tradition?

3. Would "Morph the cat" have been tighter - as in more concise - if Walter had taken care of production duties, just like he did on "Kamakiriad"? I believe cuts like "Security Joan" and "Brite nightgown" have a bit of a watered down feeling to them.

Thanks for reading!

And "definitely" is the most incorrectly spelled word on this or any other board. Don't feel bad.

Think "finite" with a de at the beginning and an ly at the end.

It's not the melodica or the piano or the guitar or the violin that makes the music, it's the person behind it. Donald Fagen would make a comb and wax paper sound like gold. He has magic.

Greetings everyone ! I know , twice in one quarter- call it- renewed Spring Time interest in Steely Dan. What is mildly funny, is the Grateful Dead, well, just the Dead, are going on tour like the old days. A lot of my friends want to go. When they bring this up, I simply say, yes, I would love to on tour but cannot. And then I add- if I had my druthers, I would be in Europe touring with the Boys at some of the greatest music venues in the world...to which they all kind of go, oooooohhhh.

Anyways, there was an article on cover bands in the SDReader again- decent piece on the Steely Damnned with some interesting info. Also of note- I missed them play last Friday- doh !:

The Steely Damned are, as you’d expect, a Steely Dan tribute. Founded in 1993 by Bob Tedde of Rockola, Rolling Stone magazine once anointed them “San Diego’s Best Cover Band” (September 1994).

“When I made the decision to actually start rounding up musicians,” says Tedde, “the real Steely Dan hadn’t been playing live since 1974. I saw an opportunity for us to hold a semi-unique status, since Dan fans were pretty much convinced the real Steely were never going to tour again. The day we booked our first show, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker announced Steely Dan’s first tour in almost 20 years. I figured that meant TSD would get a year or two run.” That was 15 years ago.

Fagen and Becker are definitely aware of those Damned San Diegans. “They were interviewed locally by Madison on KPRI,” says Tedde, “and we came up in conversation. To which they replied they liked the concept of maybe having us go out on tour [standing in] for them, or the idea of a Steely Dan Mania franchise…both Becker and Fagen also mention us during an interview with Pete Fogel, in their live DVD for the Two Against Nature tour.”

Like the Cured and Stepping Feet, the Steely Damned have been fortunate enough to perform with actual players from Steely Dan recordings. “We played at Le Bar Bat, a Manhattan club that has since disappeared,” says Bob Tedde. “Bernard Purdie came in and played drums on three or four of the songs he originally ‘purdied up,’ stuff from The Royal Scam, Aja, and Gaucho. It was beyond awesome!”

Steely Damned guitarist Hank Easton says, “I’ve been enamored with their music since I first heard them at age 13. Especially the guitar parts, and specifically the guitar solos. They really opened my eyes up to the possibilities of electric guitar, mixing the intensity of rock with the melodicism of jazz. Of course, the songs themselves are works of art as well.”

Steely Dan being a mathematically precise recording unit, Easton concedes that there’s little room for improvisation. “I play most of the solos note-for-note like the originals, as I consider them the points of highest intensity in the songs. In some cases, I feel the solos are even more important than the melody. That being said, when I get a chance to enhance the song with little riffs or personal nuances, I’ll often take that opportunity, always being mindful not to overdo it or clutter up the sound.”

The Steely Damned also performs unreleased material. “ ‘The Second Arrangement’ was to be the title track of Steely Dan’s Gaucho album,” says Bob Tedde. “Almost completed, the multitrack tape was compromised when an assistant engineer accidentally wiped a large section of the rhythm section out of the song’s middle. Donald Fagen thought it was a magical recording and refused to attempt a rerecording.” Using a bootleg of the pre-corrupted track, and some undisclosed “inside information,” the Damned even worked up a horn arrangement for the tune, provided by local Zappa alum Mike Keneally.

Another unofficial track, “Mobile Home,” was Steely Dan’s set-closer for many 1974 concerts. “The Steely Damned’s version is an amalgam of three different live renditions,” says Tedde, “including the Live at the Record Plant version. We also added horns. Gently.”

I don't know if that is what he was playing Saturday, but during one of his solos I remember thinking "that actually doesn't sound bad" and wondered why I never cared for the melodica at SD concerts.

Good news, of sorts, for all you Melodica-bashers. Donald is apparently switching to a new portable, breath-powered keyboard made by Hammond-Suzuki: http://www.hammondorganco.com

The Hammond 44 Melodion has taken Pro Musicians by storm. Everyone wants to play this new and exciting instrument. Here are a few words from some of the greats who were the first to take delivery of the Hammond 44 Pro Melodion

DONALD FAGEN (Steely Dan): I loved the Pro 44 Melodion - nice sound, nice action --I plan on using it on stage this summer -- - great product.
