The amazing thing about the Fall of '92 is the live recording. Bernhardt was spectacular, as was the arrangement. I may be in the minority, but frankly the studio demo is pretty marginal which is why it never showed up as an 11th or 12 track of whack...

Posted by: Cosmic Wow,

Is there a studio version of Fall of 92 as b-track? It is amazing that we now have had the Fall of 00.

I like Fire Side Story. You could even work in a reference to those Santa Anna Winds again.

It's clear why some of us are obsessing bout Wet Side and Fall of 92 and other oldies that never came out on an album. We're all excited about the new album and it's all we have to go on in terms of what it will be like. We'll forget them when those new song titles start surfacing.

Ditto on Michelle's comments about Brian Sweet's book. Too much opinion as fact. Too bad Michelle doens't dig my Glamor Profession idea.

Happy Labor Day weekend

"Fall of '92" rules, both vocally and lyrically. Walter sounds so god-damned pissed when he sings it, bummed about pets, women, cars, and politics. It's like the anti-Chevrolet theme song.

And the sudden interjection of politics with that fire-breathing line about "Bush and the Nazis" (who knew there'd be an even scarier real life sequel?) was a surprising touch after the blatant greediness of the Reagan and Bush years had lulled us all into a sense of ennui. Who even talked about politics back then in songs. What was the point?

I know what CD I'm going to listen to when I get home tonight.

Here's another meager attempt at helping with The Next One. It's a song that unites a couple of important current news events with characters and lines from past Steely favorites. In this little number, which takes place in Northern California, this aging acid freak has an at-home, down on the farm, crystal meth still. Some babe, not-unlike Cousin Janine, walks in, and the principal character is distracted, causing his crystal meth plant to E X P L O D E and, in a hilarious chain reaction, a massive wildfire is set(!) After a searing guitar solo, we come back to the final verse, in which 278 acres of prime, federally-protected virgin bush are burned and the protagonist is indicted on several federal counts. In fact, I think this was a story on today's news. See, the virgin bush is symbolic of the babe. Not sure what the crystal meth means. Could be funny, but not until D and W add their magic touch, assuming the idea was even slightly worthy.

I'd would call it "Kid Charlemagne's Last Stand," but in a compromise to those hell-bent on resurrecting "Wet Side Story" it could instead be called, "Fire Side Story." Then we could never hear of "Wet Side" again, right?

Just trying to help <sniffle>; 4-20? How long must we wait?

After the last Digest, thought I would make it over for my first visit.

Genitals on the cover of 2VN? HUH?????? The shadow in the center is clearly Cousin Itt, after finally getting a slight cut from David the Barber. And of course, that shadow on the left is a skinny little man with a funny head wearing an over-sized turtleneck sweater. Wait...that's the same line my wife used on our wedding night ...what the...

Why the blur where the gravel trail meets the grass? I think Mr. Subliminal is calling.

Fall of '92 is a historical footnote properly-placed as a rare b-side, available to those who genuinely seek, but not too available for those who don't understand the re-birthing of Walter as a vocalist. Me? I was glad to be at the first public display.

Wimpmeister lyrics from Fagen? Howz about "Countermoon," eh? Pretty wussy if you ask me. How come no one's doing drugs and no one's pregnant with only-God-knows-who's baby in that ditty? Maybe an alien baby from Mizar 5? Mizar 5 is a Countermoon, get it ? <wink> That's what C-moon needs, that's the difference between a Fagen song and a Steely Dan song.

Which leads me to the next item: Donald & Walter, how about a song on The Next One where these lab assistants in a fertility clinic have a wild lab orgy (opening verse), all the clients' test tubes get mixed up with surprise body fluids and proteins (middle verse), and then the resulting grab-bag chillun' end up on The New Jerry Springer Show (Third and Final Verse). Funny stuff......maybe. You could then have Chris Potter take it home for a few days and add an incredible 12-minute solo at the end, suggestive of these kids' anguish and confusion. Heck, in what could be your first Bacharachianesque reference since "Almost Gothic," you could incorporate these tasty, award winning lines as a post-ironic outro and have them cooed by the Midriffs:

---

On the day that you were born

The angels got together and decided

To create a dream come true

So they sprinkled moondust in your hair

Of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue

---

For the video (and you need a video, you know), Donald could even put on a sexy Karen Carpenter wig. ( See http://www.thecarpenters.net/lyrics/pictures/closetoyou.jpg) Not too much of a visual stretch from the pre-Thrill days, if you ask me. And everyone just loves retro.

Maybe call the song, "Test Tube Biz Kids."

Was just trying to help. <sniffle> Your honor, I'm guilty but another 4-20 years is a long sentence for a middle-aged Steely Dan fan like me.

First time here.

To Paul M who asked about the 1993 tour and the instrumental of Royal Scam/Bad Sneakers/Aja. I picked up a CD called "Doing it Live" recorded in St Louis. It's on there. Pretty sure it was an Ebay item but reasonably priced.

Fun place-guess I'll need to find more time to get here.

OK Sam, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, like when Shecky Greene or whomever, says, "Ladies and Germs" or "Ladies and Genitals."

Lots of trivia I didn't know in Sweet's book. I have 2 complaints tho-no index and too often he passes off his own opinions and hyptheses as fact. Are there any other bios of Steely Dan? Whenever I check out his web page, it's blank. Is he still in Dan circles?

Time to go home.

Sheesh, yes, "Genitals" is a joke.

Two questions as a result of checking the Gaucho LP in Sweet's books.

One, what happened to Gary Katz?

Two, was Gold Teeth really inspired by David Palmer's bridgework? I don't believe it.

I do think it's plausible that Purdie was a session guy for the Beatles at least during rehearsals. Then again, why doesn't he name specific songs?

If you look at D and W's shadows on the cover of "Two Against Nature" some will say BOTH are genitals, one Gentile and one Jewish. Maybe Dave the Mohel will settle that argument once and for all.

Between Dave the Mohel and now the yiddish cover bands at the piss pages, we seem to be having a yid fest. Are you really a Mohel, Dave? Thankfully no P.C. types find this offensive yet. Isn't a P.C. Steely Dan fan an oxymoron anyways?

So I've been wondering. Fagen is Jewish. Is Walter Jewish or is he is a Genital? If they were celebs instead of top-notch musicians, the NY Post would have answered that question a long time ago.

I've seen the question "who or what is Aaliyah?". I didn't know myself but just found an article in the media. She was a 22 year old soul singer and entertainer ("we need a resolution"), native from New York, who together with all 8 other passengers found death in a plane crash after takeoff from the Bahamas where she'd been for a video recording session.

Reading reading reading...glad to see discusion on all topics Dan related. I keep thinking I will add something - anything - to my little Steely Dan corner, but I've not had anything remarkable to say, really.

I do have one question...does anyone know what model of sunglasses Donald was wearing on last year's tour? I need a new pair, and I mean really, who's cooler than Donald?

Also, have any soundboard reacording of the last tour leaked out? I'd like to have a good quality recording of just one show I was at for posterity's sake.

That's it for now.

No Cosmic, I can't see WB singing lead on Glamour Profession. Not with the changes you mention. No.

Thank you for the info on Gaucho. My LP does say "Masterdisk"

Cosmic, a new hits compilation of Steely Dan and solo 90s hits? How come no Almost Gothic? That is perfection. I expect it to be covered by someone, soon. I think Donald might have been inspired to write Almost Gothic by Libby Titus. Why not a Steely love song for his wife? Let's hope the cover of any future hits album isn't a crumpled tin can.

Speaking of song intros, Major Dude has one great intro. It's one of the few that from Steely Dan that opens with an acoustic guitar. What a great mellow song. Reminds me of the sun streaming through my window on a Saturday afternoon in Autumn. Warm and mellow. Another Steely love song.

Hoping to have missed some of the traffic for the commute home. Bye.

Continuing the Walter on vocals thread. Glamour Profession is a song that is written and produced with Fagen's vocals in mind. But what if it were sped up, given a fatter groove and made more bluesey? Yeah, I can hear Walter's version of GP being as different from Donald's version of GP as Walter's version of Jack was from Donald's version of Jack. But you couldn't have Walter singing to the arrangement, tempo and key that Donald performs GP in.

2VN is moving to our review mirror. I see Shame, Janey, Jack and Dupree as the big hits that should make any future hits compilation.

Never knew that about Purdie. Oh, whaddaheck! Did Purdie ever play on an Aaliyah album?

Yo, Chevra;

Tom Barney played on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Some of you say Purdie's playing with The Beatles is nothing but bubbe mayses. Yet Purdie was over the big pond in the early 1960s. Other drummers subbed for Ringo on some early sessions. Geo. Martin would sometimes have guest drummers to get a certain sound. Or to "teach" Ringo, as some of his critics view it. Listen to Beatles Anthology I. "No Reply-Demo" has a great, mystery drummer that has never been identified. But was Purdie still in London by '64 when it was recorded? Ver veyst? Give those CDs a listen.

Flying Cowboys is still available, run it in a search engine and the webshops flow in alphabetical order? :-)

1989 was a very bad year for me and i didn't get to fully enjoy this particular album. I bought it on vinyl and gave it away as a present and didn't get the cd copy until two years ago .. but a friend had it taped for me to play in the car and i managed with that one for years :-) What struck me the most, ofcourse was RLJ and WB together, on one album. In my mind i connected SD and RLJ and some others as well, to see all your fav artists or musicians together would be like the thrill of a century? And now i learn some of WB's tough existence at times, i even see a connection between these two individual musicians/creative human beings. An impressive cast of musicians as well, a long list even!

Hoops-

I checked it and you're first impulse about the Gaucho LP was right; Sweet's book mentions the special LP pressing and Masterdisk is indeed the little, teeny word pressed into my LP copy. Yeah, the newest CD is great so who needs vinyl.

Oleander-

I'm not sure if it's good or bad as to you still using these Jazz terms but I bet that since you are familiar with them, you must be a goddess of understanding Steely Dan's lyrics. I guess that's what makes your posts and your site so good, so if it's good to you it's good for you and makes you good.

Ok Hoops, I am going to give this another try, but if it stays for more then 1 day, you had better bail me out and post. :-)

Steveedan: I listened to Wetside Story and it seems that the last note has reverb in it. Not like I can tell anything else, but that is how it sounded to me.

I prefer the version of JOS that is on the Album. That version on the PBS Special is so different, that I did not recognize it, at first. I find the bass line is much better on the Album. Just my opinion.

Walter's voice. The only problem he has is that it is not as powerful as Donald's. There is much more sadness in his voice and it's much more worldly wise. He has been to hell and back over the years and has earned that sound. I love it a lot, but it is different. Doing songs like "Monkey in Your Soul" is a perfect fit for him.

Can't check on the Tom Barney thing, The website where you might find the answer is going through major overload at this time, as one would expect.

Went through the Purdie thing on the Sign in Stranger Guest Book about

3 or so months ago. Including some links to pieces of "evidence". You might like to try the archives around the month of May.

I'm Aaliyahed out. Is that a verb?

Given what Steveedan explained about him, I guess we can expect "cutting" commentary from Dave.

I thought Walter was great on Jack of Speed but did not care that much for his Midnight Cruiser. But Walter sings as well as The Donald. It's just that a lot of SD songs were not written with him in mind as the vocalist.

Understatement award-Coltrane was truly great. I think more than that. Now his passing--THAT is a TRAGEDY. Love Supreme-YEAH!!!!!!

I'm up for Wet SIde on the new one. Can't say I like or dislike the lyrics as I can't remember them. I guess that means they weren't memorable. Jack of Speed's were.

Is RLJ's Flying Cowboys still available or is it out of print?

Hello Everybody -

First of all to Dave, may I be the first to wish you a L'Shana Tovah. I don't know how many posters and readers understand Hebrew or Yiddish, but I do enjoy reading it. I wonder if people here got the pun of yours about being a Mohel (pronounced Moyel), which is Jew-speak for a person trained to be a Rabbi and performs circumcisions. So when you see Dave post that he is from Circ. City, it is a pun on Circuit City - Circumcision City - got it my Mishpookahs !?!

Again, it's fun to read your stuff, by the way, can you get if for me wholesale ?

Someone posted about the song "Wetside Story". I have been into this song a lot lately. In fact, I just wrote a chord chart for that song, but I haven't cracked the code on the "mystery chord" that ends the song. I constructed my chord chart from my CD of their 7-21-96 concert in Manassass, Virginia. Pretty cool. Angel? Are you reading this?

And finally, about Jack Of Speed. I really like all of the versions that I have heard. It seems that Walter only sings songs in concerts - not even on the PBS live-in-the-studio DVD. However, on that "Plush" DVD, the tempo of Jack Of Speed is a tad faster and the beat they used is a bit peppier. I think that the Plush version of Jack Of Speed is the best one. But I really like Walter's treatment of JOS on those 1996 concerts, and also his rendition of Midnight Cruiser. The reworked version of Midnight Cruiser, I think, is great. And of course his own songs from 11 TOW.

I think we would all agree that Walter doesn't sing as well as Donald, but there definitely is something wonderful about hearing his interpretation of the songs that he crafted along side of Donald for all of those years. To me it is totally acceptable to have Walter sing any song. I never left the theatre during any songs he sang at any of the concerts that I have seen since 1993. The Fall Of '92 was a bit difficult to sit through, but hey, it was Walter singing, and for those of you who have seen their concerts from the '93, '94', 96, and 2000 tours might agree with me that Walter's singing abilities have improved quite a bit. On the 2000 tour he sang Everyone's Gone To The Movies, and Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More. I thought that he sang these songs great.

And in closing, Coltrane was truly great.

Although there's a lot of hype around her, Aalyiah had a great voice and could easily have cut it as part of the bare-midriffs. But some of the comments in the press are indeed an exaggeration of her significance.

The talk about the critics already have me bracing for the likely snide remarks they are going to make when the next Steely Dan album comes out. No matter what, Steely Dan will never be the critic's darlings.

Ole: Intro to Coltrane's "Lush Life" for sure! I got it stuck in my friggin' head at your mere suggestion! Awesome standard to begin with, even more awesome after interpreted by Coltrane. Getting shivers just being reminded of that intro. Incredible.

Regarding Aalyiah: I agree, I get the impression she was genetically engineered from conception by an entertainment farming conglomerate. Yeah, sure, she's a person and a recently deceased one at that, but I feel as if the accolades accorded to her place in pop culture are over the top. Then again, I'm a white, middle-aged pseudo-academic type--so what do I know about the so-called "hip-hop community" to which she apparently appealed to and supposedly for whom she spoke? I don't know a lot about her recordings and movies so I can't say if she was another Britney Spears or growing into a genuine artist; a couple of news stories suggest the latter--she might be great. But reading an article in today's Chicago Sun-Times, it sounds like she's led a fucked up life from birth in the glamour profession. One person's quote: "She was my role model!" What!? To be under-aged and under pressure to over-achieve and be exploited by those around her? Where's all those critics who were whining about "Janey Runaway" and "Cuz?" Role model indeed.

What I don't get is how this guy writing in the Sun-Times, Jim DeRogatis, can praise her as such a huge artist after giving 2vN a 1.5 star rating 18 months ago. After reading this guy's story on Aalyiah today, I don't see how he could possibly have been qualified to review 2vN or dis SD when they won Grammys. Both of the frequently-read music critics in Chicago (Jim DeRogatis-Sun-Times and Greg Kot-Chicago Tribune) don't know shit about Steely Dan and there should be a law against them ever writing about our guys. My hope is that the Trib, the corporate nazi paper it is, gets hip, or at least half-smart, and has their Jazz critic Howard Reich interview/review the Dan. Reich would do a fair job.

Michelle and "Gaucho" LP: I heard the same thing about there being a special initial run of the "Gaucho" LP. I believe the LP had the typed name of the special vinyl pressing company stamped into the LP on the pick up ring near the label. I want to say "Masterdisk" but I don't think that is it. I have it and will check my LPs. Of course, the CD still renders any LP version of Gaucho, save for artwork size, obsolete.

I love Walter's "Jack of Speed" completely and wish a studio version were available. It was the highlight of the '96 shows for me since it was instantly memorable, had this energy that really swung--it really was driving and the tops. It told me the Dan were going to do it again and Walter's gave it a hell of lot of soul and the song was wildly energetic and loose. The 2vN version is good and DF's vocals make it consistent with the rest of the album's sound. But I agree, it's a touch too docile there, all sedated--that might be a reasonable statement about Mr. Jack. At the last show of SteelyDanTour2K in Düsseldorf, the groove of "Jack" was DEFINITELY sped up a bit to give it more of a '96 feel and, based strictly on memory and having heard it that way once, I recall an almost zydeco feel to it. Or maybe it was the booze. Anyhoo, I vote next tour Walter vox on "Jack" and "Josie."

Ricky Lee Jones: You know, I didn't own the Walter-produced "Flying Cowboys" until 1993. I liked it, although maybe it's a touch too wistful for me than most RLJ albums. But the cool part about it was that somehow, it set the stage in my head for 11TOW. The following year, 11TOW seemed so logical for Walter after that one.

M: I can understand how your disappointment over Boise still burns. Maybe you can get into some Federally-assisted recovery program to help these attacks. Maybe next tour.

Thanks for reading and writing.

Hoops!--I'm not talking about "it" BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO JINX IT!

Clean Willy--I predict that "Wet Side Story," if submitted to the Steely fine-toothed studio comb and the patented synergistic Dan lyric production method, will be one of the most copacetic, nifty lollapaloozas ever.

Aaliyah was distantly related to Gladys Knight. Born and bred to be in show biz. She married her producer when she was 14 and then it was annulled. Shit, she never was a member of the Steely back up choir so you know she was not that good!

I feel the same way about Paul Simon. I picture Fagen, Paul Simon and Chevy Chase and a couple of others getting together every now and then and talking over beers about their careers like at a happy hour. Did Becker and Fagen take part in the Musicare's tribute to Simon before last spring's Grammys?

I see a DVD Audio of Paul Simon's You're the One is coming up.

Paul's an odd character. On the one hand, he write some stuff that is very astute when it comes to describing Baby Boomers and he is quite the perfectionist. (like the title track from Graceland) In that sense he reminds me of Donald Fagen. Then again, I think he takes himself a notch or two more seriously than he deserves to be like Don Henley does. And finally, there's that aspect of him that is a part of history.

I forgot to ask. Was Gaucho recorded digitally, at least in part? Or was that the case with The Nightfly? I seem to remember that one of these was a pioneering milestone of some sort in terms of digital recording.

Thnx

Michelle

P.S. The crumpled pewter-colored bag artwork on Decade pretty much sums up how it felt to be a Dan Fan in the 1980s. I got a good laugh when I saw a remastered version of it several years ago and it had a sticker that said, "Includes all original artwork." Like it mattered! What a joke!

Hoops story about Gaucho reminded me of the first time I had heard Gaucho. Strictly cooincidence, I was 19 at the time, and we didn't have the Internet like we do now. I knew the album was coming but wasn't sure of the date. So I had checked a few times before, but it wasn't out yet. But then one day it was and I knew because I walked in the store and THEY WERE PLAYING IT! Clearly, I got a rush from that and of course I bought it right then and there.

I seem to remember that the first pressings of Gaucho are on better quality vinyl than subsequent copies. Not that I play it, but I still have that LP but it has some scratches and a scuffed cover. I don't think I would have believed then that we would have to wait 20 years for the next Steely Dan studio album, TAN.

It's funny that the Eagles, Doobies and Steely Dan all came out with albums that year that followed up their most successful albums. These records were also their last albums before the bands went on long term hiatuses and key members embarked on solo careers. 1982 had solo albums by McDonald, Henley, Frey and Fagen.

20 yrs later and it looks like 2002 will be the year of the next one from Steely Dan.

I hope so.

Walter owns Jack of Speed? NO WAY! DF has the low-key cool on this one. Best track of the whole CD. I heard that Jack of Speed has already been covered as an instrumental. Jack of Speed will be the track we hope to hear again and again and by DF.

-On second thought, instead of covering Hotel California, maybe they could do a medly of Hotel California/Don Henley Must Die.

-i don't remember much of Wetside Story but the refrain vaguely rings in my head. I remember the melody of the refrain but not the words. It was OK but didn't grab me like Jack of Speed. Jack I could remember clearly long after the two shows i saw.

-Speaking of Jack of Speed, could we have Walter back singing that? Here's a song that was first sung by him. He owns it. The Fagen vocals are ok but it's like the song is on some concoction of Prozac and downers. Becker's was fatter and was in your face. Donald should never sing the word huey again-too limp. The bogus-haircut line in Walter's was a lot better.

-Can't wait for The Next One. Will the record company let them take as long to record it? Do Steely Dan care what they think? I bet not.

Here's the REQUIRED comment of this poster:

IF YOU HAVE not (NOT) SEEN IT, GO THERE:

the Danny's section on site ( http://www.dandom.com/thedannys/). I laughed my ass off. I love to recapture the Y2k tour and bring back those memories. And yes, Hoops was the most impressive dancer. Not only at home but everywhere. Try real hard to come up with something that hilarious like The Danny's! You must be an SD fan ...

Most interesting SD intros: Hey 19, Peg

Most interesting other intros: Wizard Island (Jeff Lorber), Don't Look Down (Rudess Morgenstein Project)

My current favorite titles: SD Glamour Profession - which I neglected as "too smooth" for years!!! And some Bela Fleck & Flecktones titles.

Oh, I must point you back again to http://www.dandom.com/thedannys ! Just have a look and get inspired ...

Where does that breeze come from? Just seem to receive a Danny vibe here. How about the Danny "Funniest Steely Dan T-shirt custom-made for the tour/show"?

The intros to both Reelin' in The Years and Do It Again may not be the longest but they are indelible to the collective consiousness of late 20th century pop culture. When I hear those opening chords in the intro, I am immediately transported back to the first time I heard Steely Dan, when I had no idea who Becker and Fagen were, what those songs were even about. But immediately I think of Nixon and Watergate and things 1972-1973, the end of U.S. involvement in Viet Nam one Saturday in January. Definitely sountrack songs to some major historical events. I wonder how Becker and Fagen feel to be identified with a sound that recalls such events in people's minds.

Howdy, it is official now. The Rickie Lee Jones discussion room is closed and people can now meet in the PLP, the public leaning post. It isn't a free fall venue, although we'll drop you or give you an old-fashioned boot and perhaps better yet, the run around if you misbehave .. We however don't think of the worst scenario and rather focus on the nice stuff.

And the nice people.

There's a first for everything. After a year and a half this PLP will be a place where RLJ fans can meet, maybe in time we'll create a new more independent PLP ...

Topics? Let's see .. How nice it is to hear Katy Lied again after quite some time, the meaning of Pretzel Logic and Aja in people's lives, how Gaucho and Miles Davis pair up in Japan etc etc

Hey all! If you will allow me a moment to make a shameless plug, I will go back to lurking and enjoying this place!

Last year I posted about the release of the first CD by my band, The 9's. Lot's of reviewers had labeled us as "Prince meets Steely Dan" (which, considering the recent thread on the guestbook is pretty funny!). Naturally, considering our respect for The Dan and for the Purple one, we were highly flattered.

Well...we have just released our 2nd CD, "All Night Music." Last week, Album Network described us as "a combination of Sly Stone and Steely Dan." Once again, we blush at the comparison.

Anyway, if any of you are interested, you can check out our website:

http://www.the9s.com

There are soundclips and a link to purchase the CD from Amazon.com.

If anyone has any questions or comments, please write to me at groovecake@aol.com

Thanks for your time. Now we can all go back to marking the days off of our calendar until "The Next One" is finished!!

okay kids, so i'm listening to our local wanna-be New Yawker shock jox, the Spud Brothers, and like everybody else within a foot of a cheap microphone they're going on and on and on and on and on about Gary Condit and how he must've done "it" and how he's just so like Clinton (this must be good media, it's EVERYWHERE!), anyway, this cat calls the show and starts blabbering about how he has it on good authority (i'm thinking Art Bell or the INTERNET), that Condit can't get it up without a man in the room, (or i guess he can't have sex with his intended female partner and potential murder victim without a man in the room...i don't know, it's all too lurid). but HERE'S the Steely Dan connection; this guy claims that Condit likes HAITIAN men, that he has them around all the time, that he dispatches his ex-lovers to Haiti in a kind of informal and terminal Divorce. Now, this cat NEVER says Haitian Divorce, not those two words in that order, but his entire 3 minutes on-air was so, what can i say?, eerie...

listen now, my friends, to that tune...mayhaps i'm slow, but it somehow it makes a Bigfoot, UFO, Alien Abduction, Bat Boy, Ross Perot sort of sense...and it proves, for a fact, that Donald and Walter have, for lack of better words, INSIDE INFORMATION and way ahead of time, at that.

i feel so guilty about spreading this kind of poop but i's still smartin' in Boise, m.flinn

I'll give you that the music for Wet is good. But the lyrics smack of wimpy Donald tunes that he tries to sell to Manhattan Transfer or other such wimpmeisters. It is apparent that they aren't interested either. We will not hear that song on the new one.

Cash Only Island - same deal. But the music ain't that hot either. This song will probably end up getting covered, however.

hoops: it's funny you mention Brubeck - i see an incredible brubeckian influence on the title cut for 2vN and the intro for meadowlark is wonderful - i am honored to have seen him play as often as i get to, what a treat, to be 36 and see a legend in jazz play live about once a year

my 5 favorites for intro's are glamour profession, aja, do it again, all live versions of Bodhisattva, aia version of reelin in the years (who knew, right?)

off to camping at acadia national park for a week, so i'm awol from the cyber-world until after labor day - will check in here before i leave work today - happy campers are we!

Posted by: hoops,

I'm not sure it technically qualifies as an intro, but the first part of Brubeck's "Strange Meadow Lark" is sublime and somehow has always struck me not only as a sort of intro, but also as a superb piece even without the rest of it. Like a movement. (When I hear it, I always think of Maggi McCoy.) Also, how about "Aja"?

"Deacon Blues" doesn't have an especially long intro but it really sets the stage for the song. This is really a good thread--I look forward to reading other's thoughts.

Regarding Sharon's inquiry about "The Next One," have to agree, I am surprised there hasn't been more discussion about it. Sure, all we know is that they are working on it (sincere thanks to Fogel BTW for the great glimmer of hope!)--yet I bet things are much in flux at this point. One thing I remember about the 2vN sessions was that Joe Sample was said to have contributed to those sessions but of course, Sample never showed up on the final tracks. And so I suspect it will be similar with "The Next One:" we may hear of people doing sessions but will they make the final cut? I agree that I would like to hear "Wet Side Story" on this one. Admittedly it didn't grab me when I first heard it in Chicago in '96; but subsequently it caught me. I never did get to hear "Our Lawn."

My predictions (and not based on any recent rumors or inside tracks): I truly do think that "The Next One" will come out more quickly than 2vN. I think their engine is warmed up and I suspect, perhaps based on the "Word and Music" promo interview CD, that parts were in progress already when 2vN came out. I think what came out on 2vN was what got most developed first but others were also in progress, just not completed then. I hope so. I'm now thinking there's a better chance for the next tour in 2003 rather than 2002 but a few weeks ago, before I heard that they were recording, I pegged it at 2003 or 2004. Again, simply, an "odds maker here"...no inside word. I'm anxious to hear what others think about "The Next One."

Finally, tonight I discovered that Dandom's "dleestan" and I went to the same high school at roughly the same time. Pretty amazing. Talking to him reminded me of two things: the first thing I ever wrote about Steely Dan was an album review of the then brand-new "Gaucho" for the school newspaper (I was co-editor). It was a horrible ditty in which I said "Aja" was an acoustic album--HA! It also reminded me of the coach who nicknamed me Hoops McKay because of his familiarity with "Gaucho," that review, and because I needed "encouragement" as a basketball player. Pretty funny, especially looking back over 20 years.

As always, thanks for reading and commenting.

Saw on the alt group and yellow book where Pete Fogel says Steely Dan has already started recording "The Next One." I'm eager to hear more about this. I don't understand why there is so little chat about this-seems like big Steely Dan news to me.

Any other news about this as to who might be on it, how far along they are or what the songs are like? Although they are great live, a successor might be just the ticket right now. I would love for "Wet Side Story" to surface. After all, "Caves" took five albums to surface.

I'm glad there's this place where people seem more interested in talking about Steely Dan than just about themselves or hurling insults. The yellow pages were pretty sleazy today.

Paul M --; Tim Schmit got involved with SD way before he was with the Eagles, or Azoff. In the mid-70s when he was still with Poco, SD and Poco were both on ABC Records, and they used to do sessions with each other. Schmit sang backup on several SD songs including FM, Royal Scam and Aja (and maybe as early as Pretzel Logic?) as they liked the way his high harmony blended with DF. Fagen played keyboards on a couple of Poco albums and Poco even covered the Dan's "Dallas" tune.

On the YGTI and YGTII discussion, I can remember Walter being asked about it once back in the 70s and he said something typically Walter like "The only connection between the two is that we liked Your Gold Teeth and we decided to write a sequel to it."

Yes, Apple garnered an Emmy for the cable they invented that connects digital cameras to computers (including the DanCam and Hoops DanVentionatography. It's known either as iLink, FireWire, or IEEE 1394 (for the gearheads). Firewire transmits digital video signals in both directions at the same time 50x or more faster than previous connects. Apple gave the technology away as it developed the user-friendly digital video software package iMovie (now iMovie2) and the Spielberg-ready Final Cut Pro. Thus it has become the Universal standard. I use this techology on the job with Sony Digital Video Cameras with fine results. I can appreciate the work, time, and effort that Hoops has made. Hope Apple survives the aftermath of The Cube and System X...

I think Joe Walsh (formerly of the James Gang who also wrote In the City from the Long Run) wrote Life in the Fast Lane, not Henley.. I think there's a theme: "my mazerati does 185..."

The explanation I remember from an interview with Walter is that he had a girlfriend who was a big fan of the Eagles. Walter was evidently not as enthralled. Thus the Eagles as in "turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening" was simply a noisy cloaking device to drown out an argument. I don't think I would take that as a compliment. But then bad press = good press, it's still press, eh. Or one could say that the Eagles thoughts were similar to Reagan's when he wanted to use the not so patriotic Born in the USA for his '84 campaign or use currently of John Fogarty's Fortunate Son for the flag-waving Wrangler commercial...

No way Don and Walt wrote for Eagles. Influenced? You bet. Henley is a Don and Walt wannabe. Loosen up Don H. and stop pretending you're a drummer. They had Azoff as manager but I thin k that was it. Timothy B Schmidt seems to be pals with SD given he has showed u p for a gig. Is Azoff the connection?

Venue they should never play again (PNC Performing Arts Center)

-Song that they should cover live (Hotel California)

-Back From The Dead Award-1970s SD player who comes on tour again (Larry Carlton)

Paige has a twist on an old legend...had never heard that version before. To elaborate on Paige's mention of the "steely knives" bit, supposedly "steely knives" was almost a "tit-for-tat" to the delightfully sarcastic line in "Everything You Did," "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening." SD--Hillarious as always.

But until an hour ago when I saw Paige's post, I had never considered that Walter and Donald had a more literal role in helping with that song. IMHO, I don't think so--I don't see much SD humor in it; on the other hand, Don Henley has a knack for making satire a touch too self-consious. Still, I sense that "Hotel" was by the same people who brought us "Life In the Fast Lane" and not SD.

I'd be interested in seeing any quotes and sources on the subject. But I'm thinking this new rumor might be a touch hyperbole...now how about that guitar on "Black Friday?"

With "Gold Teeth I & II," I have never been clear on what connection, other than the title dental appliance, the two have. I'll give that another look. SD may have only 8 studio albums, but after years of regular listening, I still discover new things about their songs. I'll give a listen and my take on what the songs might be about later--hope others do the same in the mean time.

Thanks for the good topics!

Something has been bothering me for a number of years.

There was a rumor while back that a connection existed between the Eagles "Hotel California" and Steely Dan. I'm not speaking of the obvious line in the song "they stabbed it with their steely knives..." We are all aware of that connection.

No, the connection or rumor that I had heard dealt with the idea that "Hotel California" was in part, written by one or both of the boys (Don and/or Walt).

It seems that for a short period of time, they were touring together (long time ago) and spent a lot of off-time together. (This may be true or not ture...maybe some here can confirm one way or the other).

One of the arguments that I heard dealt with the nature of the song. "Hotel California" was unlike anything that the Eagles had written before. Sure, there have been some marginally cynical songs by the group. But consider that during the time of HC, the Eagles had very little in the way of this kind of work.

My friend continued his argument by stating that the lyrics of HC (including the phrasing, etc.) is so much more SD like than Eagle like, that it demands consideration.

Now, I'm in no way, in agreement with the "actual" fact that Hotel California is really a creation from the minds of Don and Walt...However, it is interesting to consider.

Has anyone else heard of this rumor. If this has been talked about already...sorry. Just looking for some enlightenment.

Thanks

-Paige

Jeff Skunk Baxter (as I thought just about everyone knew) was a member of the Doobie Brothers along with Michael McDonald after the Katy Lied sessions, when it was apparent to both of them that Steely Dan was no longer interested in touring or keeping a band together.

Another band that Baxter was in was as musical director for the band on the NBC show with weatherman Fritz Coleman. This was a short-lived show that aired late on Saturday nights after SNL. Baxter was great, and Fritz was a bit entertaining too, but it wasn't enough to keep the show on the air.

Since then, the last I heard about Baxter is that he is now giving lectures on anti-missle defense systems. He was on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher a month or 2 ago. I read the transcripts on this, and still can't believe that this stint of Baxter's is for real.

Here's a new Steely thread for you all to mull over --

2 songs - Your Gold Teeth (from Countdown To Ecstasy), and Your Gold Teeth II (from Katy Lied).

What is their connection? Why are they 2 albums apart? Is their a fixation on gold teeth? Could gold teeth be a nickname for dice, as in shooting craps? Who's got some other questions like these?

I'm on my way to SD land (no, not Steely Dan land), San Diego for a little R and R. Take it easy - It's your game, the rules are your own, win or lose.

Wow (Wow on first? Who's on second?) I believe the band you are referring to was Sneaker that did the cover of "Don't Let Me In" (I assume you mean that and not "Don't Lock Me In").

The August Edition of ProSound News has an interview with Elliott Scheiner where he talks about DVD-A and confirms that he has done DVD-A's of Eagles' "Hotel California" and, the one that excites me to end, Van Morrison's "Moondance." While he doesn't allude to Steely Dan at all, he does extoll a lot of the virtues of DVD-A and talks about how Warners is leading the pack with DVD-A. He believes that DVD-A will replace conventional CD. BTW: Isn't it hard to believe we are coming up on the 20th anniversary of wide availability of CDs?

DVD-A's gotta be my next system. So many setups I see seem geared more towards DVD-A being an afterthought after DVD-V

Must repeat over and over:

DVD = Digital Versatile Disc

DVD not= Digital Video Disc

Here's a question for you all. Skunk Baxter had a band 20 years ago that covered one of the pre-Dan demos, Don't Lock Me In. What was the band? I assume it's a vinyl-only release. What did Skunk do musically since then? I know he played on Donna Summer's Hot Stuff.

Frankly, an angel whispered into my ear and had my cyber flying carpet stop by the Marshmallow Bunnies :-)

Been listening to Princess of Cairo aka (or is it the other way around?) Amelia Ray's new album yesterday (found the link in the Yahoo Steely Dan Club) and that's what i like about the variety in Steely Dan venues. So many angles, so many threads and Dandom's just no Boredom, right?

Made me think of all known and unknown musicians heavily influenced by Steely Dan. Made me also remember the New York band Jango. Never heard anyone mention them, while it is very obvious their music derives from or resembles or is influenced by Steely Dan. I once listened to an album that, like the cover of Two Against Nature, has this Pink Flamingo thing .. Jango has it in their lyrics, like Rickie Lee Jones on Traffic From Paradise .. To go off wondering about those pink flamingoes is not what i will be doing here .. But i do wonder if anyone else knows Jango and if they are appreciated?

I did like what i heard, but felt their sound was too close to SD's and i'd rather "deal" with the genuine article .. But they weren't bad, really, not bad at all!!

Carleen Anderson's singing a prayer, 00.24 here in the Netherlands .. Let it Last .. and please, do try to read what Roy.Scam wrote about Black Cow, for he captured the essence of a feel you Americans all were able to share meeting on Danfests and such .. :-)

Looeezz: Your comments on Parker's Band exactly mirror mine. It was the first clip I saw on a coworker's computer at work and it knocked both our socks off. I was never much of a fan of that song, but The Steely Damned really do it justice. By the way, they are absolutely dynamite, live.

Jim,

I just want to take this opportunity to thank you for all the work and dedication it takes/took to do the Dannys, and create the fabulous web page. A mere perusal of the tributes took me immediately back to last year - perhaps the best year of all for us.

Thanks Hoops, you're an inspiration to us all.

Posted by: looeezz,

My husband's away on a fishing trip and my kids are off at camp. Finally (finally!) a moment alone. Let me first say that I've had a few too many glasses of wine, but I figured what a better way to spend it than to catch up on my Steely Dan Fanatacism (so please excuse the grammar, I'm just writing what comes into my head. I'm sure I'll regret it in the morning!).

Hoops-I really enjoyed the videos of the the danfests. I was a little late to join in, and missed it, but they were fun to watch.

The Steely Damned Videos: My ramblings as I'm wathching.................

Parkers Band: Wow! What energy! I never really cared for that song, but seeing a live band play it was like being hit by a brick wall (and I mean that in a good way). The "punch" of the horns was so "live". It really hit home. Man, that was fun, and so close to the recording. Absolutley amazing!

Caves of Altamira: One of my favs! The horns sound great and so professional looking. The break right before the sax solo (where the drummer hits the hard note (?) right before the solo begins -- AWESOME!) Then the solo. Just like the album, but with a live quality. Lou Marini. What else can I say? The guy plays with every beat in his heart. absolutely incredible! The only thing is that after I hear this song, I'm so sad that I'm not there hearing i live.

Do It Again: I loved the beat the moment it started. The opening guitar riffs -- just like the album. What a hypnotic song. The first solo is amazing, again, just like the album. Then the guitar solo the singer plays is incredible, and he looks like he's having so much fun playing. Wow, what precision! I love the faces the keyboard player makes(he does a damn good job playing too!). The percussion is great too. The guitar solo fits perfectly. Every note sounded RIGHT. I love when he starts playing a higher note, kind of a rock and roll thing (right before the end).

Gaucho: Started out a little loud, but then........ The sax part... incredible! Once again, fantastic! Then I wnted it to be louder!! Another favorite Dan song of mine. The bass player sounded fabulous, the real essence of the song (and always my fav!). Another fantastic guitar performance. Then the sax hits you again (and the bells). Wow! It's the type of sound where you close your eyes and just BE THE MUSIC. Yeah, ok crazy, but it sounds great to me right now (a couple two three glases of wine, yeah but just LISTEN!). The end with the horns and guitar is just incredible! It's such a sad melody but it puts you right in the song. The guitar part makes me want to cry.

Don't Take Me Alive: Never a favorite song of mine, but it caught me offguard. I love the shot of Tom Barney and Lou Marini, it just kind of puts you in the mood (likes its a real occasion). The guitar is great, just like the original. The same despair -- especially in the vocals and guitar. On this song, I have to say that if someone told me this was a coverband, I would say they were lying. A guy singing to the original steely Dan song, okay, but the music? No way, it sounds like they took it from the album. After a second listen, I love the very low sounding guitar sound right after "no red light flashing." What can I say, now I love this song too death. What a great performance.

just my drunken thoughts.......... I hope they make sense tomorrow...

Nice work Jim. A lot of fun to read. Fun to reminisce considering the void my two favorite bands have left this concert season....

amen to angel's comments, no pun intended - i apologize for my trite comment here yesterday - i was taking a humorous refuge from jim, wormy and angel over in the amen corner - actually for me, i find i post most carefully here, restricting my posts to steely dan and not other things like in other pages more personal - as for paige's post on night by night, i loved it, read it, and had nothing to add except that i loved it, so i refrained from wasting the space on such a short comment - i love this place because it is so restricted that way - a nice break from all over the map yellow pages and the cliquey (in a good way) of the amen corner - thanks hoops and sorry i threw you off with my comment!

Hoops: The last person in the world I would ever want to upset is you.

Especially when you use the Moody Bastard moniker. (Walter being God this girl's Book of Liars). I feel very blessed that I was one of the only ones to comment on your Danny's page, so I don't think you are upset at me, per se. But I do wonder why just a very few are posting? For me, it is the lack of conversation. I definitely have a tendency to respond to other's thoughts and I get "give and take" over on the yellow pages. Here it seems that no one answers any question and thus the writer gives up and doesn't try again. I hope some of you do speak up. There is so much creativity in this group of people and quite a bit less signal to noise over here. Give it a try.

Regarding yesterday's spillover to the blue. What is going on is a vigil is being held for a missing member of this cyber family, who is going through a rough period in his life. Entries that we feel are of interest to the general SD family are posted over to the yellow. No elitist thing is going on and I hope this clears things up.

By the way, I did catch 2 more of the video clips of The Steely Damned from March and unfortunately, all it does is make me want to see the videotape. The music is good, though. Great memories, too.

In the book of Liars, by your name....

wow, i love the redesign of dandom central, not to mention the color scheme on the GB. and the bunnies on the burner are very Beckeresque. great job, Hoops.

the Dannys brought back some cool memories from last summer. while in this Internet age, i think it's almost impossible to be surprised by a song selection--of course, if "Gaslighting" had reappeared for the Manassas set, i probably would have burst an artery--i still recall some amazing song-related moments.

(1) the horn arrangement on "Royal Scam"

(2) vocals from Carolyn, Victoria, and Cynthia on "Dirty Work"

just thinking about it . . . i'm ready for another tour.

Hey Everybody --

IT'S TIME FOR MORE SHAMELESS PLUGGING !!!!!

The Steely Dan Band will be playing next Saturday night, August 18, 2001, in Manhattan Beach at Hurricane's located at 200 Main Street. We got the whole night. Large set list, fully stocked bar, dancing girls (and their jealous boyfriends - watch out !) and all the action you could want. Well, knowing this crowd, maybe not all the action you could want, but some action that I think you will enjoy. A good start, OK?

The MFM (that's me) is raising the bar for the SFB. With all of these gigs consistently coming up for the band, I have introduced a lot of new charts of Steely Dan material for the band to play. We will not be sitting on our laurels, or our hardys too. We must continue to cover new ground. March or die. Keep it fresh of risk it spoiling like last month’s lunch meat. As it it written: Don’t let the meat loaf. And for the vegetarians: Don’t let the toe foo.

C’mon down to “Surf City USA” this Saturday night y’all.

The SteelyFanBand website is at http://www.steelyfanband.com

I meant to post this report of the Los Angeles-based Mini-Dan Fest last Saturday night at Paladino’s in Tarzana (the valley of Los Angeles) much sooner than now, but it has been an extremely eventful week, so, finally, here goes:

<< Angel’s post of the LA Mini-Dan Fest: >>

Angel

Bodhisattva …

Your Faithful (West Coast) Narrator's report on the L.A. Danfest.

Got to Paladino's around 7PM, just in time to see the final set up and sound check for Steely Fan Band. Steve, immediately saw me and he took me to see W1P, Dan Johnson. We were all jazzed and ready to enjoy an evening of music, beer, a little jazz and conversation.

First up, right on time, Steely Fan Band. There was a 2nd keyboardist this time around and a 2nd electric guitarist I don't remember. Both added to the richness of the sound. Setlist was: Rikki, Jack of Speed (Dan & I both thought this song alone was worth the price of admission. They did an excellent job). Deacon Blues with a real ripping sax solo, that surprised us. Peg, Pretzel Logic, Monkey In Your Soul, Don't Take Me Alive (This girl screamed when the first 3 notes were played. Great job, too.), Janie Runaway, Josie, Green Earrings, Black Cow, Reelin' In the Years with lead vocals by the back up singer. Kid Charlemagne, (This one had a bit of a problem with someone missing a cue, so it was probably not the best rendition done by this band. People were dancing anyway, so I don't think many cared.) My Old School and the final tune, a totally rip up the floor version of Bodhisattva. This girl was dancing to it. What a great end to the set. I was really sorry to have it end so soon.

Next up, Which One's Pink. The crowd got larger and the music got louder. The band fronted by bassist, Paul, did another great show. I have the set list, thanks to some help from Dan, but I won't post it here. The song, "Pig", did turn up and I got to watch Dan do his famous oink at the top of the song. The crowd went wild and I laughed and cheered.

I did stick around for the set up by Led Zepagain, but only got to hear the first song. The metal definitely got heavier and louder and it was 12:25A.M. I had a 1A.M. curfew from my family and decided to call it a night.

Made it home with 5 minutes to spare, too. This according to my Kid, who was obviously checking. Great end to a fun night. My thanks to all.

… Won't you take me by the hand ...

<< My post of the LA Mini-Dan Fest: >>

Hey hey everyone -

I spent the evening last Saturday night with an Angel, -- and a pig?

Angel, your accounting of the evening was right on the money. It was great to see you. It's been a long time since Father's Day (the NOHO Festival). Please say hello to Mista Angel, and the budding pianist. Remind little "J" that he could be The King Of The World, as far as we know.

Dan - you ain't no pig that's fo sho. Great oinkage by the way. Larry obviously liked it too. I could hear all of his keyboard stuff last night. Which One's Pink? is absolutely great. Be sure to tell Paul that everyone loves him (well maybe don't, ego-checking might be the order of the day, your call). Hey wasn't that stipper in the pink top killer? I just love the valley. We may be married (with children) but we ain't dead.

Last night was hoppin' and so many of you missed it. Too bad too. If you had gotten there by about 9:45, you wouldn't have gotten in. The place was at capacity by that time. A few Latino Los Angelinos told me so just outside the club while passing around a doob. I graciously declined a toke, but was mildly nonplussed when the leader of the pack wouldn't tell me the year of his beautiful pink cadillac when I could not guess it's year. It was in the mid to late 50's though, that's for sure.

Led Zepagain did a rockin' set. The band was certainly in "character". Robert Plant had the right hair, and all of those body motions and hand gestures down pat. P-P-P-Push Push Push !!! Jimmy Page had the double neck guitar, and the signature sound of the live Page with the Gibson Les Paul Custom. "John Paul Jones" played both Bass guitar and the keyboards. He did a very competent job. Both "Page" and "Plant" did their parts well with a bit of a live inflection. So you got the studio stuff with a little of the live and loose feel. Very cool. "John Bonham" stood out for me. This guy looks and (also dressed) exactly like Bonzo. He had the headband, the beard, mustache and long hair. It was uncanny. He took a drum solo in Moby Dick (I had previously incorrectly reported the solo as being inside Bring It On Home). It was a great tribute to Bonham. I was really impressed by his playing and that solo was so authentic and awesome.

I drove back from Paladino's in the valley to my pad in West LA at about 2:30 AM and promptly watched my 2 hour video tape of the evening. After that, I missed most of Sunday. That’s Rock ‘N’ Roll fer ya.

<< After reading my post on the St. Al’s GB, Angel was very kind to write: >>

Steveedan: Glad you gave a review on Led Zepagain. I really wished I could have stayed a bit longer to get a better impression, or at least hear a song I knew, to see how they measured up. Thanks.

By the way, my review of SFB missed something very vital. There was a killer keyboard solo done by Stevee, during the performance of Black Cow. You did Victor proud.

<< And finally, to Angel – If you liked my Black Cow solo enough to give it an honorable mention than I am extremely proud and grateful for the mention. >>

As we head into the weekend, I find myself playing with the Steely Fan Band in Manhattan Beach Saturday night at Hurricanes Bar & Grill. Just in case anyone was interested …

Keep Dan in your thoughts, everything else will take care of itself.

Steveedan (MFM for the SFB)

Hoops

I am still wondering who those women in the 2VN booklet are but I'm actually not expecting an answer. I think it's Fagens's mother and aunt, if you ask me. ;-)

I found the Steely Damned clips MORE THAN much better than expected. How about superb for a rating? It's got a beat, is easy to dance to and an kewl dynamic. But it is odd at first to see "Donald" with flowing hair, standing at the mic without at least a hand-held keyboard.

Gaucho was great. I heard the Steely Damned played Second Arrangement. Could we have that one too?

The Night By Night dissection was so thorough I am speechless and made me get out my CD for further listens. I will reserve judgement for now.

And the Danny clips? Well Hoops, indeed you must have worked way hard on these and your little post-pregnancy snit is strangely earned. I can't imagine what people don't like about themselves in the videos and the awards, unless they hate that I enjoyed seeing everyone up there. I now know what Hoops, Shari, Mark from Boston, Oleander and Miss Ducky look like and it's wonderful. As you remember, last year I pleaded to get the Toronto Danfest going and it was not all we hoped for. So I am jealous of those of you who got to do New York, party and received awards. I'm living vicariously through you people in the vids. If you are reading this and are worried about your award listing or appearance on the teeny screen, you need to relax. It's all in good fun and amongst friends. You all look beautiful. Please don't take our Dannys listings and movies away.

Finally, a reminder Toronto Danfans:, Sunday, Aug 19, Summer in the Square Sunday Night Serenades Concert . Vibraphonist Peter Appleyard and his band will be playing some great jazz.

Guess that's all.

Paul

I sure didn't get this "safe in here" thing, so I had to ask around and found out it somehow relates to another SD forum that is having a this wink-and-nudge kinda thread. I guess I'm not in on the joke.

But what I really don't get is how some really wonderful items here have illicitted little response. I see lots of hits on the web counters but few stop for comments, etc.

I don't understand how there can be virtually no discussion on some really great and some provocative posts people have taken a lot of time and thought and shear love to contribute for our interest and pleasure.

Paige did this wonderfully, inspired, interpretation of "Night By Night"-wrong or right or in between, definitely worth discussing.

We hear all about this really great Danfest in LA last weekend--hardly any followup.

And there was an inquiry about who the heck are those people in the 2vN booklet photos (actually, I didn't wonder who they were but did wonder what shoreline the skating is at--wish I could help Paul).

There are the really great Steely Damned clips from Le Bar Bat--given the recent cover band discussion, I would think these would be exhibit A for further discussion. Amazing stuff.

And of course the Danny awards page. EVERYBODY HELPED ON THIS! Then it took all my weekends this summer...labor of love. I geuss post-partum depression of sorts for me. Getting lots of hits--but how come few comments? Over a hundred Dan fans have spoken in the voting...here's some of the results:

Dandom said Jones Beach was the best venue of the tour but a significant number said The Gorge, Brussels and Shoreline and others are "Venues from Hell." The Gorge--where I have twice pilgrimaged to over 2500 miles-- was voted runner up "Venue from Hell!?!!?!" Dallas was voted "Best Show" of the tour (!?!?!?!) Sounds like Steely Dan news to me.

Then there is all the gut-busting hilarity by everyone--great stuff!! The few comments so far have been wonderful, but I wish there were more and I am disappointed with private emails where some people are whining that there hair is wrong, the clips must come down because they forgot to take off their purse, they don't like the category they were a runner up in because it reminds them of that bent fork they ate off of when they were a child, etc. etc. (I hate seeing myself listed or filmed but too funny to pass up, bite your lip.)

Yeah, it's safe...let's hear about all these things.

Sorry if I'm in a crabby mood today, but this stuff rates as Dandom news. Let's hear about it. Thanks to those who are interested and thanks to those who posted or will post here/there/anywhere and are tolerateding my rants.

I'm done crabby for now.

Truly a Moody Bastard,

hoops

another entry to the danny list is a vote for the "most unexpected song they played" - for me it was "monkey in your soul" - we had listened to that release at home during the day on concert day and i distinctly remember saying "you know, it's a shame they will never do monkey in your soul live, it's too deep a cut" and we both nodded in agreement and started conjuring up what they might do live and so, well, we almost busted wide open when they played it that night - it was so great, unforgettable, and what a rendition it was!

anyone else?

that site is too funny hoops - and i'm honored there's an award after my namesake - sigh

i agree the mansfield fans were on target in showing massive appreciation to donald taking a sip of water, for heaven's sake - whatta night

my only regret is i didn't know anyone here so my dan fest in the parking lot is unknown to the folks here - gin and tonics, melons/proscuitto, cheese and crackers, very nice - off the back of the car with 2vN blasting out the ass end

my favorite fan in mansfield was this unkempt dude who was sporting a home-made t-shirt (remember iron-on letters?) with the words "yes there's gas in the car" hanging out by the front gate trying to score tickets - anyone see him? god, that was so damn funny, i thought my husband was going to blow up laughing so hard

last row under the canopy on the left side facing the stage (a big change from 2nd row we had at the last show, but what can you do when there's an album release, right?)

Posted by: hoops,

The Dannys page is still being tested and this here is the first place it's been mentioned, just to see if there are any last minute tweaks. Those who come here and then check out the page are sorta guinnea pigs. Appreciate feedback on technical issues as well as content.

Regarding Angel's comments: Ha! Thanks for the complement (I think). Actually, The Dannys were supposed to be done in *late March*. So getting this out so late is disappointing if you ask me. But between work, taking care of family and then the shear amount of material submitted for the page, there's a lot of lame excuses for it taking 5 months. Another excuse: I hate watching and working with video of myself.

The "thanks" is great...since it did take a lot of time to compile the page. BUT thanks most of all to everyone who voted and submitted comments. A lot of people took a lot of time to contribute their comments and humor--HILARIOUS STUFF! Perhaps the best kudos to the dozens of Dan Fans who wrote in and to SD themselves would be to pick up and chat about some of the SD-inspired humor on the Dannys page. Hence why there are links to this forum after each award.

Regarding Angels comment about posting LA Danfest spoilers to the BlueBook or SIS or...wherever: Others have similar comments too--about which places to post of the several SD internet venues. I suggest that you use the Internet resource where you think it will be seen by the most interested parties. Sometimes there are a lot of people at particular place but no one seems to care and the item gets lost. I also think telling people to see another site usually doesn't work too well, at least unless there is an activated link--People usually won't go over to another site unless there is a link. I say, feel free to post the full item where you want and multiple times rather then have a linkless reference...or email me a request to set up an active link. (Again, ultimately I hope to have HTML code be self-inflicted by the poster in such a way that doesn't muck up the whole BB.)

Now if I were Angel, the first place I would send my L.A. Mini-Danfest review would be the LA Danfest list at la@dandom.com. That way it would rach all the L.A. area Dan Fans and generate buzz for future Danfests in the L.A. area that could be even bigger and better. Then think about other sites and resources where you will reach a lot of Danfesters who care to read your story.

Reaching Danfest types is a big motivation behind my getting a real server last year (rather than have it tucked away in the back room of my work server like my other sites have been.) It seemed like a number of people wanted to have Danfests but were intimidated by a couple of really well established Danfests. I felt it was important to help so that everyone, regardless of locale could feel they were part of the fun. I get so much out of actually meeting the people I interact with in the Greater Dandom and hope others will have similar experiences.

The Danfest pages themselves are written by those who are hosting the particular Danfests--they are not my pages--although I am glad to host and help with them. So it's helpful if you mention the urls to their sites when talking about Danfest and also it's helpful if you send your Danfest reviews and comments to the Mail List for the particular Danfest, if no where else.

Anyhow, I love doing this and love it even more when there is feedback. I get asked why I spend so much time on this site. Well, I may not be motivated to learn some of the Web stuff by itself, but combine it with the inspiration of my favorite musicans, Steely Dan, and I can overcome any intrepidation about exploring and experimenting with new types of web pages. It's a real upper and glad you share that with me.

Enuff warm and fuzzy.

A couple of quick comebacks to Dan's amazing post on the LA Danfest.

My full review is over on the yellow pages. Sorry about that Hoops, I did not know a full report needed to be sent here. Next time, for sure.

First off, no man or woman can force W1P to drink anything he does not want to. Especially when he is in day 2 of a 2 day party. KC and the Sunshine band. Sheesh!

I had 2 drinks. My definite limit when driving. Nuff said.

Yes, he did indeed sing during the sound check. It was very funny. I second the microphone comment. Bad enough I had to listen. :-)

I couldn't believe anyone in their right mind would request "Through with Buzz". Says it all, actually.

There were several folks who came and didn't tell us? I should have known. Happened in NYC, too.

I believe the song the girls commented on in the "Ladies" was Pretty Woman. Maybe I heard it wrong. What also floored me, was the creative ways they hide the objects they normally carry in a purse.

I was impressed. :-)

Yes, fun was had. Definitely. Thanks Dan and Steve, you are great.

The Mini Danfest was a strange and wonderful evening. Who knows which is which and who is who? To start with, there obviously are a number of yellow and blue GB lurkers who prefer to have their mugshots disappear. I spoke with several folks who came to the Danfest and refused to disclose their identity. So the evening was off to a bizarre start. Angel appeared out of nowhere and forced me to drink while she watched. "Paladino's Special Ale" for $2.00. Sticks and Steeveee were breaking some bones with the evening's only performance of The Fez during soundcheck. Because the SFB singer "J" had not yet arrived, I got the opportunity to repay angel with my stirring vocal rendition of The Fez. Had I known steevee and sticks better, I would have forced myself upon them as the "soundcheck" guest singer. Fortunately for all (except angel), I had no mic.

It's kind of difficult to convey the "flavor" of Paladino's. Let's just say Le Bar Bat it's not. In fact, I'd say the ratio of Danfesters to convicted felons was roughly proportional. SFB went on sharply at 8:00 p.m. Although everyone was groovin and diggin the scene with a gansta lean, there was one guy, let's call him Chick Magnet, who put us all to shame in the fun department. At 6-1, about 230 in a sleeveless tie die, this dude was lapping up the Dan from the Fan Band at all angles. 90% of the time, he was by himself exhibiting a series of dance moves that are illegal in at least four states and one Canadian province.

Not to be outdone, the bare midriff cocktail waitress with the horned rimmed glasses demonstrated the whirling dervish swirling service style that would have been equally at home on Soul Train or Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. Because I needed to see those moves up close, I was forced to order large amounts of $2.00 beers.

The SFB kept pumping out the tunes, surprising the crowd with Janey Runaway and Monkey in Your Soul while refusing my loud requests for Through with Buzz. Yes there was a Train Wreck on Kid Charlemegne but the passengers all survived with minor cuts and bruises. You know, Paladino's hosts mostly metal bands. This means that they have a lack of experience with the subtleties of mixing keyboards and horns. It got better as the night went on -- that's why we were yelling for more keyboard steeveeeeee.

In a concession to the reality of having 3 bands on the bill, the SFB was forced to call it quits after 80 minutes. Of course, what ends up on the cutting room floor is often enough to make you cry. No Midnight Cruiser, no Boston Rag . . . . no Through With Buzz (maybe he IS a fairy). But what they played, they nailed and, just like last time, the Floydheads who drifted in early were seen raising their fists in approval. Great job guys!

I will report only a very little on the W1P. For the second time we have followed an adequate set at the House of Blues with one of our better performances at Paladino's. I think the band just relaxes more because its "just Paladino's." Highlight of the evening for me was trading air guitar licks on Hey You with Derek, the SFB guitar player. Like SFB, we had a limited set and many favorites didn't make "The Final Cut" However, we did blaze through Shine On, Have A Cigar, Pigs, Time and closed our set with Comfortably Numb. I saw angel, some lurkers (c'mon, disengage the cloaking device) and members of the SFB entourage just falling out about the place!

No flying pigs, no denny dias but a nice hispanic woman named Joise of all things was trying to capture the attention of our rhythm guitar player "tribute band legend" Steve Zukowsky. I promised his girlfriend that I would protect him from the pride of the neighborhood. Then there were the strippers in pink tops from Pleasures (the strip club in Pasadena that plays host to Which One's Pink? 3 times a year) who took a Saturday night off just to come see W1P! I'm sure that what angel overheard was a description of various pole riding that takes place during Comfortably Numb and the predictable strippers on stage during "Young Lust" (better known as the "I need a dirty woman . . . " song). Once you've seen this, you're never quite the same. I keep imagining this happening during Babylon Sisters.

For various contractual reasons, I was forced to miss the entire Led Zepagain set. Most of W1P and the strippers made their way to our keyboard players house in Woodland Hills for some potato chips. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to angel or steevee or the cloaked ones. It was a poor imitation of debauchery but its all I got at this point. I expect that the next "MiniDanfest" will be at least medium sized!

Truth, Studente- Thank you for the info on the opening music from 1993. I take it it is not available over here in North America?

Paige- That was a really interesting essay. THANK YOU! I have to soak it up.

Question about photos inside the CD booklet to Two Against Nature- Who are the women roller skating by the ocean and the woman dancing by the deer lawn ornaments? Are they anyone specific like midriff section members? Or is that Donald's wife or are they no one specific?

Posted by: Paige,

Recently, posters were asked what their least favorite Steely Dan songs were. I was surprised that a couple of people mentioned the song “Night By Night.” I had always considered this cut to be one of my favorites. Not just due to the edgy musical style (the rock ‘n roll Steely Dan) but also because of the edgy lyrics that reinforce the ambiguity we see in many of their songs.

So, I went to one of my favorite SD sights (Oleander’s Fever Dreams), to see what others had written concerning Night By Night. I was interested in how others interpreted the lyrics and what possible storyline(s) existed behind the song. To my amazement, there were no interpretations posted for this song.

For years, I had listened to Night By Night and did what I think most people do with any song they hear over and over again. We establish in our minds a certain setting and cast of characters that are mostly born of our own experiences. It could be a word or a whole line that triggers a scene that reappears every time we hear the song. Of course, this may reinforce a storyline that was never intended. But, this is not necessarily a “bad” thing. I think that we can agree that music, like all forms of art is open to a wide spectrum of interpretation. I have to remind myself that there really is no such thing as a “bad take” on a song. It is in the ear of the beholder.

That being said, I can think of few other songs that better represent the typical Steely Dan “painting.” Broad and dark brush strokes that are at once impressionistic and yet surgically specific. This song IS quintessential Steely Dan.

When I think of Steely Dan – lyrically, I think of subjects like: drugs, prostitution, sexual perversion, gambling, ill-conceived relationships, mental illness, etc.etc. In Night By Night we see a mixture of these same dark conditions dabbed in what appears to be random association. This makes the bigger picture represented by the song, the subject and meaning in and of itself. It is self-sufficient as a “generic” Steely Dan image. The specifics (of the story) are less important when compared to the “imagery” of the entire song.

But first, a word about the music itself…

Of course, I know nothing about music. So I can’t do “music speak” to all you talented musicians out there. But then again, this may actually give me an advantage. (Let’s talk…)

The music to NBN seems to fit the lyrics to perfection. This is not one of their “simple” tunes. There is a lot going on here. Night By Night seems to mix the horns with the harder rock sound better than other SD offerings. They mix the raw guitar sounds so well with the fluidity of the horn section. Even the violin (like) sounds fill the song with atmosphere. When I hear the complexity of this song (musically), I know that the boys did their homework (so to speak). You can hear the effort that was made to combine everything into a cohesive sound.

The music is angry and forceful. The vocals reinforce this anger throughout. The guitars are raw, crisp and biting and contrast beautifully with the fluidity of the other instruments. Just before the guitar solo (by the way, who is this guy?), you hear the muffled (covered) strings that set up a repeat of the intro. Wonderfully done.

There is anger in this song.

Back to my theory that Night By Night is more a “general” statement about the misery of the human condition (on the streets) than a specific story. The cryptic lyrics allow for the widest of interpretations. We are left to speculate what is going on here…to see beyond the “imagery” to find a storyline that might have inspired the song…if one exists at all.

Is this about gambling? Drug sales and distribution? A (serial) killer on the streets? The misery of the downtrodden? Police control in a small town? Or all of the above?

NIGHT BY NIGHT

“It’s a beggars life,” said the Queen of Spades

“But don’t tell it to the poor man”

I get the impression that the scene is set in a small city community, which has a thriving “bad side of town.” This side of town is typical of the decay-like conditions of your average dying inner city. There are drugs, prostitution, roaming dogs with no tags, old men standing around a burning 50 gallon drum, their gloves missing the fingers, trying to stay warm.

In this scene we have a drug dealer. The addicted are poor having lost all of their income to their demons. The Queen of Spades seems to refer to “fate” of the cards. “You must do the best you can with the cards you’re dealt.” The poor man DOES live a “beggars life” and therein we find the contradiction. The Queen of Spades appears as the “holder” of the cards (or the controller of man’s fate). No need to tell the poor man. He is already aware of his fate.

“‘Cause he’s got to kill for every thrill, the best he can.”

Note that the first three lines are spoken by the Queen of Spades. She continues. The addicted need their fix and will do anything to obtain the money for their self-destructive habit. Inner city murders during the commitment of robbery. They do it for the “thrill.” Not the “thrill of killing” but for the thrill of the high they receive from their addictions. So, they “kill” (rob) for the “thrill” (high).

Everywhere around me, I see jealousy and mayhem

Because no men have all their peace of mind, to carry them

I love the line “all their peace of mind, to carry them.”

This line is almost like a life lesson or philosophical axiom. Complete and total peace of mind is never achievable. True contentment is somewhere out there just beyond our grasp. This results in the mayhem of our existence. It is the “drama” of life. Jealousy exists when we are not content or have peace of mind…when we are full of self-doubt. Self-doubt is as much a part of our existence as breathing. The misery of our human condition is really born from within. I think that this line is saying that if we could (in some perfect world) have total contentment and “peace of mind,” we could carry ourselves through this world.

(Chorus)

Well, I don’t care if it’s wrong or if it’s right

But until my ship comes in, I’ll live night by night.

Well, here’s our first look at the dealer (the narrator). It’s pretty straight forward. He is selling drugs. He is contributing to the decline and destruction of the downtrodden. He cares only for the monetary return he receives from the addicts. Yet, there is a hint of conscious. The fact that he mentions that “he doesn’t care” in and of itself indicates that he thinks about it. The “night by night” line seems to refer to the term “day by day.” We all go to work everyday in search of legal tender at whatever cost to our self-esteem. It is the drudgery of our lives as we “wait for our ship to come in.” This is no different than our narrator. This is HIS job, night after night. He too is waiting for his ship to come in (to hit the big time) when he will not have to sell drugs…always on the run.

When the joker tried to tell me,

I could cut it in this rube town

The joker here probably refers back to the Queen of Spades again (cards and fate). But beyond that…the joker could be the dealer above him (in as much as he is the middle man). He is encouraging him that he can make it (as a dealer) in this town. He could build his own little empire of addicts and dealers just as he has done. The “rube” town seems to refer to the “unnecessary complexities” of drug dealing…an overly intricate system necessary in insuring the dealer’s safety. The joker is trying to tell the dealer (narrator) that he can fit within the system

When he tried to hang that sign on me

I said, “take it down.”

The narrator hates what he does, but he does it out of necessity. The higher dealer (joker) laughs at him as he (the narrator) denies what he is…a purveyor of drugs (and destruction). Still, the narrator justifies his trade, convincing himself that “his ship is about to arrive.” “So, don’t call me a dealer, this is just temporary.”

When the dawn patrol got to tell you twice

They don’t do it with a shotgun

I think that the local authorities are on the take with the dealer(s). They go through the motions of patrolling the streets but do little to combat the scourge of drugs.

Yes, I'm cashin' in this ten-cent life,

For another one

I love this line. It seems clear that the narrator has succumbed to the realization that he cannot escape his fate. He is fully entrenched in this lifestyle of drugs and crime. He can no longer see his “ship” on the horizon. He sees his life a cheap (without value)…”ten cent life.” The players may change, but the game remains the same. Thus, even when he attempts to trade in what he is doing, he winds up doing the same thing for someone else.

Well, I ain’t got the heart, to lose another fight

So until my ship comes in, I’ll live night by night

The narrator is completely defeated. He fights to leave behind what he is doing to himself and others…but it is a fight he will lose yet again. And so he stares off towards the horizon, waiting for his ship to come in.

I saw where there was a Dan fan that created paintings based on his interpretations (or impressions) of SD songs. I don’t think that this is any different. This is simply a painting…an impression.

Hello hoops and all, burnt to a crisp by MiniDanfest last night and KC & The Sunshine band in Vegas on Friday (I'm not kidding). I'm quite certain that the other attendees are in similar condition. The number of Lurkers is quite impressive. I promise to regale with tales like the story of the Tie Die Chick Magnet or the twirling cocktail waitress, or Joise the hispanic woman who developed a crush on the guitar player currently known as Tribute Band Legend. This should whet your appitite for destruction!

Thanks to The Truth and others for the info on the Eastern Europe special CD with those hard to find tracks. I had seen that on eBay about 16 months ago and it was going for about $40-$50. Seems like maybe SD's way of getting airplay, ethusiasm and maybe a little bit unsual stuff out there in that part of the world where maybe SD doesn't get as much exposure. Whether you call it an "Overture" or not, I know it game me goose pimples when that thing was played in '93. Still does, just thinking about it.

Speaking of Prince a couple of weeks ago, Ringo Starr has that revue, "His All-Starr Band," and Sheila E. is one of the acts, along with Howard Jones (his cover of IGY is pretty good), Greg Lake (ELP), Ian Hunter and Roger Hodgson (Supertramp) and the whole thing is directed by Mark Rivera who often plays for Billy Joel. Whew-wee! What a curious combination of players! Which reminds me, I could dig a reprise of the New York Rock and Soul Revue if the guys were a tad burned out on doing the SD thing next year or just wanted a change of pace.

Been listening to CBAT a lot lately. Moonflower and I are seeing Bob "Can't Buy A Thrill" Dylan at the Illinois State Fair tomorrow. Catch Dylan if you can.

Looking forward to hearing how the L.A. Mini-Danfest went.

Be well.

Posted by: Serioso Musico Studente,

So, Mr. Truth, your name should be in the book of liars. In fact, the tunes on the European CD are: Cuz (edit), Aja (live) from Alive in America; Fall of '92 (live), and Overture (live)from 9/10/93 (the same show as Green Earrings on Alive in America. Certainly Overture is wrongly named, as an overture is an OVERVIEW of the songs to come. What we have here is a medley.

Posted by: The truth,

yes Paul, the "overture" came out as a B-side to the Euro version of the Cousin Dupree promotional CD single, but unfortunately not in the USA so it is very hard to find here. Other tracks on that same Euro single were also from the '93 tour, "Aja" and "Book of Liars".

Hi! Groovy, low key place here.

So hard to believe that last year's show is already in the rear view mirror. It was incredible. I would be very happy if they would release at least some tracks as bonuses or MP3s. My votes would be for the Mancini instrumental, Dirty Work and Walter's two----Daddy and Monkey. These were the highlights for me since they were different. My understanding is that at the beginning of the tour, Hank's Pad had no vocals but by the end they had added words sung by the girls. Were these words written by Mancini long ago or during the tour by Steely Dan or the choir?

I heard that the 1993 tour instrumental overture which had Royal Scam, Bad Sneakers and Aja was released in parts of Europe last year as a bonus on some CD singles. Is this right and if so how can I get it? I thought I saw it on E-BAY. Did it ever come out on this side of the pond even as a promotion?

I am really jonesin' for a second Walter Becker solo album. I liked Eleven Tracks of Wack much better than Kamakiriad which isn't bad but is my least favorite. Does Walter have plans for a new album?

Finally, if you are in Toronto next weekend, Aug 19, check out the Summer in the Square Sunday Night Serenades Concert as vibraphonist Peter Appleyard and his band will be playing some great jazz. Just a little different.

Guess that's all.

I just love his solos on "green earrings"& "glamour profession".

Especially at the end of glamour,it just does something to me.

Ah, Aja. Let me interpret your dream: If you fell asleep eating Anna's Swedish ginger thins, it has nothing to do with singing -- it means that a new woman will enter your life soon. If you're not looking for one, one will try to clean out your sock drawer and leave promptly. Otherwise, it's just a silly dream.

To partially change the subject, I have a tangentially Dan trivia question: Did the IMmortal ROger NIchols write music? I have here in my collection of piano tunes a pop song from 1970 called "Let Me Be The One." Music by Roger Nichols, it says.

Any takers on this query? I'll ya send a box of Anna's Ginger Thins (straight from Sweden) if you can give me an answer! (They are good.)

Thanks ever so much. ~Peg

Howdy Aja, could not resist your call in the blue :-) So, they're in your dreams already?

Brian Setzer Orchestra. Do Donald Fagen and Brian Setzer know one another? To keep it eclectic it might just click between those two ..

The "Carey" song was on my mind today, i wondered about "their" version. Had the line "the wind came in from Bogota" spinning and felt almost aching for one of those parody things. And it still rings close to "Do It Again" to me, a percussion thing perhaps. Carey. Yes. We will just have to wait patiently, won't we?

The Ed Greene link is incredible. Thank you for providing it. I did not realize that he had worked with so many people--the list, in case you haven't gotten over to the link, inlcudes everyone from Steely Dan, B.B. King and Michael Omartian to the Osmonds, Tavares, Cher and Jose Feliciano. Amazing!

Seeing his name made me wonder what happened to Michael Omartian. We probably know him best for his keys on Here at The Western World, but I do know that he has worked with Christopher Cross and Donna Summer. Any ideas as to what he is up to? Assuming he's not dead. I did hear he joined the God Squad.

Now ... it's time for SHAMELESS PLUGGING !!!

The Steely Dan Band will open the triple bill show at Paladino's in Tarzana, CA next Saturday night, August 11, 2001. The address is 6101 Reseda Blvd. It's the North West corner of Reseda Blvd. and Topham Street. Topham is just North of Oxnard St., and Victory Blvd. The club's phone number is (818)342-1563.

This is the show that had been publicized here as our Los Angeles-based Mini-Dan Fest. But wait there is much, much more ...

You have seen posts by our beloved "DJ" W1P about this Mini-Dan Fest, not only on behalf of the SFB (Thank you W1P) but also for Which One's Pink? This band is absolutely great !!! Derek, one of the SFB's guitarists and I had the pleasure of seeing Which One's Pink? at the House Of Blues last Saturday (8 days ago) night and I am still reeling from the experience. This band is a MUST SEE !!!

In addition to the Steely Fan Band, and Which One's Pink?, topping the show at Paladino's next Saturday night (the LA-based Mini-Dan Fest) is Led Zepagain. I can't wait to see this band.

The music of Steely Dan, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin all in one evening. Ain't this a dream come true? W1P and I hope to see you there.

Thank you Lady Bayside. The review was worth the wait. I still have not seen a copy of the show, but your review helps put the video into perspective. Good work.

The more time passes, the more I realize that seeing The Steely Damned at the Danfest in New York was one of those unforgetable experiences. I have now seen them in San Diego and they are great. What we saw in Le Bar Bat that night in New York, was something far beyond what their San Diego show is like. Add to that the incredible list of session players that shared the stage with them and a list of songs that probably were never played in the same room at the same time. What you come up with is awesome and it was. Thanks again, Pete and Hoops.

Lady B! Haven't seen you surface since that seance thing with Chere...

But you're right, a modest run of video copies on the Le Bar Bat show would be most welcome. We East Coasters definitely have limited access to the Damned. Thanks for bringing it up, and reviewing as well.

Well, I am long overdue in sending this, but my life's been a little chaotic lately. You all remember the Hall of Fame Danfest which was held in NYC several months ago...

Well, I was at Le Bar Bat again for Tycoon Dog's set there, and was chatting with out own Pete Fogel, who told me that he had finished editing the Steely Damned video (getting a camera crew there to film them was a last minute decision) and had a copy hanging around the bar. I cajoled him into loaning me the copy with a sob story about my having too much time on my hands since I was now without a job...and said I would review it and let him know honestly what I thought.

I have had a couple of pages of notes for some time now, but sitting down to do it...so, here I am, and here it is!

The opening is a bit choppy and dark as hell, but then you hear Bob Tedde start singing the opening lines of Rikki, and I remembered exactly what it was like to be there, in the audience. Wow.

The audio is really clean, except for a few fleeting moments, and the tape has the feel of a bootleg, almost. The camera work is uneven at times, due mostly to the use of two different cameras. Sometimes it has a 70's wedding video feel, and at others, you feel like you are standing there, watching them play right in front of you. I actually liked the different video styles, because frankly, seeing that 70's video during the early stuff (like Midnight Cruiser) was almost like seeing a Steely Dan video.

Pete intersperses the fabulous music with interviews, which are great...the first is with Bob Tedde (horrible lighting, but wonderful to hear his perspective), the Damned's lead singer. Later, we hear from Earthbound (Keith) and Matt, and finally, Miz Ducky. Miz Ducky makes a comment at the end of the video that she could tell as soon as Bob started singing that he was in love with the music.

This comes through loud and clear on the video. Bob doesn't try to be Donald Fagen. He doesn't really sound like him, he doesn't try to, but they manage to capture the essence of Steely Dan by their dedication to the music..to getting each note right, each nuance perfect.

They do 23 songs...and I have to tell you that each time I heard one, I thought..."oh, this video is worth is just to have *that* song..." Yeah. I said that *23* times. Everything sounds so phenomenal. Blue Lou wails on his solos, Bernard Purdie smokes--especially on Green Earrings. Hank Easton...I can't believe Steely Dan hasn't asked HIM to tour with them yet..he is amazing on guitar. The horn section...keyboardists, you name it. Oh, the background singers..I would be remiss in not giving them special mention...the Damned's own midriff section, Ruby and Peg. They just sparkle.

All in all, I have to say that although the video has some choppy camera work at times, the audio saves it.

Now we have to get Pete to mass produce it..this is a must have "bootleg" for any Dan collector.

Well, Pete...you wanted honest!

Shine on you Cray Zee Diamond. Cray Zee, over the rainbow, you are Cray Zee. Are you sure you're not Syd Barrett? Hey, side news, tonight the Foo Fighters are opening for the Atomic Punks (DLR Van Halen tribute) at Paladino's (yes, the same location as next week's Mini-Danfest). This was supposed to be on the QT, but they announced the show this morning on LA's "alternative" station KROQ as follows "the Foo Fighters will be opening for a Van Halen coverband tonight at a Tarzana nightclub." Anyone who knows anything about Tarzana knows that there's only one place to which that could be referring.

Hello all...just wanted to say I have officially become a fan of this site, officially. Hoops, I love what you've done with the place. Much like what we've talked about it the past, simple and elegant. Very nice.

I don't have much to say at the moment, other than the fact that a tree fell on my car last weekend, so I had to borrow my parent's car to get to work today. Want to take a guess what was in the tape deck when I started it this morning? Aja. It didn't make me happy that my car is in the shop, but it made me feel a bit better.

Well, I shall return often, and may post if I have something relevant or irreverant to add.

"I Got the New" guitar solos. Tough call, but I've got to go with Larry on the first solo at 2:22 and Walter on the second at 3:26. I agree that the first solo has similar phrasing to Walter's style, but there are some pretty fast and fluid runs that don't really fit what we've heard from Walter up to that point in time. Walter's style is much more staccato. "Josie" is a good example.

What really bums me out is that you folks don't seem to want to discuss what the song is ABOUT. See my post here on 7/25 at 19:42:08. Somebody agree or disagree with me, for Christ's sake. Say something, at least!

Posted by: Howard,

There was some discussion recently about the guitar solos on I Got The News. Only got round to another listen this morning - and it sure sounds to me like Walter on *both* sections, i.e the solo after "still be proud to know you" and the extra bits after "love rampaging".

Very bluesy, with Walter's delightful sense of phrasing. Listen to his solo on Josie, then listen again to the guitar on IGTN. They have a lot in common - some very similar musical ideas, even the guitar tone is similar. I'm convinced it's Walter throughout on IGTN.

... so why is there a credit on the album for Larry and Walter for solo guitar? Two possibilities:

1) the credits are wrong. Given the crazy number of different versions and takes of the song that were recorded, it's not that hard to imagine a few errors creeping in for the musician credits. Also, there are no credits on this song for brass/saxes, or for clavinet, but these are definitely played on the song.

2) Larry does play some guitar, but not the two obvious sections of lead guitar. There are bits of staccato/muted lead throughout the song (during the verses and outro) - this could be him, though calling it "solo guitar" is pushing things.

My bet is it's just an error on the musician credits, cos it sure sounds like Walter to me.

Hank Silvers wears a Fez on a picture in the yellow GB Gallery. there's a nice little story attached to it, right Hank? here in holland people from turkey and morocco wear them. i was in amsterdam in an old neighboorhood with lots of oriental shops and i wanted to buy some fish. the man behind the counter wore this beautiful Fez. the whole time i heard the song going over and over in my mind. and i wanted the fez, not the fish. but to boldly ask for it? i think i will really get me one, next time i am in that area again or near amsterdam.

a Fez is the ultimate Dan Fetish, isn't it? like the secret handshake to a musical maçonlike world. why didn't they sell any during the live tours i wonder .. Fezzes and T-shirts ..

Posted by: Paige,

I read, with interest, the interpretations offered on the Oleander site for the CBAT song, Reelin’ In The Years. I found both of them pretty interesting and quite reasonable. However, I wanted to offer my suggestion that RITY is indeed a song written to a (much) younger girlfriend and not (necessarily) to the daughter of the narrator.

I just want to add that for years, I thought that the line:

"(Are you) Stowin’ away the time"

was

"(Are you) Stoned away the time"

(I’m probably not the only one)

Anyway…

"Diggy" (9/17/99) writes about RITY:

"I used to think the narrator was talking to his girlfriend, but now I realize it is a father talking to his daughter. (CBAT sleeve notes" "How’s my little girl?")

Well, Diggy may be right. It is certainly a reasonable interpretation. However, I contend that it is not necessarily the case…

"Winter/Spring relationships have shown up in more than a few SD story lines. We all know them: Hey Nineteen, Cousin Dupree, etc.

I think the Reelin’ In The Years is just another angle on this same theme. Even though CBAT is early work and the boys are much younger, I still think that the theme holds. The fact that the CBAT liner notes state "How’s my little girl?" doesn’t necessarily mean that the girl is related.

"Your everlasting summer"

"You can see it fading fast"

We all remember when we were "very" young, the summers seemed almost as long as the school year. While the first line refers to this, the second line indicates that the girl is not "very" young in that she sees "it fading fast." The time phenomenon no longer exists.

"So you grab a piece of something"

"That you think is going to last"

There is a certain desperation (grab) when you start to realize that things don’t last forever (you can see it fading fast). You desire something that will maintain a sense of unencumbered youth. In addition, our "I want it now" society" drives us to establish traditional or expected accomplishments as early as possible (unreasonably so). The "piece of something" could (indeed) be a "puppy-love" relationship with a fellow student of her same age. But I think not. The perceived stability of the "older man" relationship throws her "immediately" into the future. It is wanting (demanding) something "yesterday" (the impatience of youth). The older man IS from "yesterday."

"You wouldn’t know a diamond"

"If you held it in your hand"

"The things you think are precious"

"I can’t understand"

Okay, so it is easily understood (as diggy suggests) that youth does not appreciate the value of things. Once again, while I agree with the general point, I think that there is a slightly different interpretation on the same theme. The girl actually DOES appreciate the value of a diamond…but only in name. She wants (demands) a diamond to solidify what she "wants to last." The narrator is NOT materialistic and has grown beyond the mere material value of things. He is bothered by the fact that the girl (being much younger) places such value on the diamond as a "traditional" sign of commitment. For him, a diamond isn’t necessary to show commitment. "Isn’t our relationship more valuable than a diamond?" However, in her world, it is a necessary step towards commitment.

I’ll skip the chorus for now.

"You been tellin’ me you’re a genius"

"Since you were seventeen"

Okay, I won’t go into the ambiguity of whether she wasn’t a genius when she was sixteen or if it is merely what she started saying (to anyone or everyone) when she was seventeen. What’s important here is the idea that this line indicates (around the time) when they first met…when she was seventeen. She is trying to impress the older gent with her accomplishments and abilities. This, of course is a sign of low self-esteem, which is common in the teen years when we are trying to find ourselves and "belong."

"In all the time I’ve known you"

"I still don’t know what you mean"

This is not unlike the explanation of different values (above): essence vs. the material. The girl, in trying to impress, grasps on to the highest value (in her mind) she can imagine. To be a genius means different things. Just as with the diamond. For the girl…being a genius is an extremely valuable quality. For the narrator, it means nothing. And he can’t understand why she places such great value on this…regardless if it were true or not. "You don’t need to impress."

"The weekend at the college"

"Didn’t turn out like you planned"

The "weekend" part of this line confuses me a little.

More to the point: She has been telling so many people that she is genius for so long (a couple of years, at least, before she is college age) that she has even convinced herself of her intellectual abilities. The reality that she is not "college material" was not what she had in mind…not a part of her self-delusion. Another interpretation is that she is visiting the college (on the weekend) with all its partying and promiscuity and is disillusioned by the whole scene. "I’m above this." "These are mere children…I’m smart and look, I’ve got a mature boyfriend."

"The things they pass for knowledge"

"I can’t understand"

I think that this is one of the best lines of the song.

Of course, we can look at generational differences and what passes for knowledge at different periods in history. This is the probably the simple interpretation and is true regardless. But beyond this…CBAT was released in ’72. This was a transition period between the true "hippie" period and the realization that such idealism is unrealistic. It’s not unlike what Ozzy stated in an interview: "Everyone was singin’ about flowers and love." "We thought that was bullshit" (roughly the same time period). Colleges are often reflections of what is going on in society. Everyone was questioning the establishment, redefining everything…including academia. The narrator was from a more innocent time when education was more traditional.

Anyway, the line may very well stand apart from the theme of the song as an independent concept or observation.

"I spend a lot of money"

"And I spent a lot of time"

I think that the materialistic girl is very high maintenance. She is making a lot demands (like the ring, etc.) and it’s draining the narrator’s pocketbook.

There is little doubt that the girl is flighty and impulsive. Where the narrator seems to be more down to earth. He has mellowed in time and is much more realistic. One wonders how such opposites attract. Yet, we see the same theme in other SD songs.

"The trip we made to Hollywood"

"Is etched upon my mind"

He’s off entertaining her impulsive fantasies yet again. Not unlike the diamond’s value (in name only) and her (assumed) failure to fit into college (intellectually or otherwise), she unrealistically sees herself as a movie star. "Take me to Hollywood." He obliges.

"After all the things we’ve done and seen"

"You find another man"

Well, here’s the inevitable break-up. She’s not the only one who has been unrealistic. He has been creating his own share of self-delusion. He has indulged her every ambition, her every impulsive move and whim. However, in sticking with her previous failures (including the trip to Hollywood), she finds another lover. It should be no surprise that this discovery happens in tensile-town, where everything is superficial. There are plenty of others just like her who feed into her own shallowness.

"The things you think are useless"

"I can’t understand"

Actually, he DOES understand. Once again, we have a value judgement here. I have a funny feeling that she used the word "useless" in their final (perhaps heated) discussion before she left him. What he really doesn’t understand is his own sense of himself. Perhaps he may even doubt his "usefulness." But then strongly denies it and pushes the doubt away.

Chorus

"Are you reelin’ in the years?"

"Stowin’ away the time?" (I see this as an additional question)

"Are you gatherin’ up the tears?"

"Have you had enough of mine?"

For me, the chorus is the final argument before the actual breakup. In the argument (and the chorus) it is strictly the narrator talking (or even yelling) as he realizes that it’s all over.

The first two lines, he refers to her immaturity and impatience. She wants EVERYTHING NOW! She wants to reel in all the years and have everything without paying her dues that only time will bring. Time means nothing and yet, it means everything. She gathers up her tears so they don’t show. "You can’t even cry over this!" But I (project on to you) that your insensitivity to all that is real (valuable) demands that you are tired of MY tears.

In further support (as diggy references), the liner notes from AIA:

"Reclaimed juvenilia. 'Infernal woman.' Escape from relationship."

For me, RITY is a precursor to similar themes we would be exposed to in the future. Perhaps the boys are sensitive to time and age. They realize the immediacy of it all. Lost youth. Even during the CBAT period. It’s like not being able to enjoy summer because you know that soon, winter will arrive.

Don’t tell me that I’m susceptible to over-interpretation…I already well aware of that fact.

Thanks for sharing your ideas with me.

-Paige

The Prince thread is making me laugh. Yes, Iwas into Prince. I think that he did some great stuff mid eighties. My favorite album of his is Sign of the Times, a wonderful compilation and probably the most 'rock-heavy' Prince output. His house band put out a great jazz album where the song titles were all numbers. Does anyone remember the name of the band or the album?

I have always marvelled at the fact that so many of my favorite albums are soul double albums: songs in the key of life (cut 1 minute off of the end of every song and Stevie would have been 100% successful), 'Look to the Rainbow' by Al Jarreau when he still did 'Jazz', 'Stomping at the Savoy' by Rufus and Chacka Khan. I see Prince's affinity to a large degree with people like Stevie wonder and Rufus and Chaka. His Jazz interests are limited. His rock affinity can be very cliche, but once in a while the guy writes and amazing song.

That's one of the interesting things about Walter and Donald. They overlap with so many of my musical interests: Dylan, Randy Newman, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Lenny Cohen on one end, jazz both pur and fusion with Weather Report probably being the closest to their door, but with a soul sensibility as well, giving them a Marvin Gay-esque flavor as well. Now if they did classical...

Our cousin Jim (b.1982) was staying for us this past month and he brought along his favored cd's, most of wish were Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd - when we made him listen to CBAT and C2E we got a "not bad" (is that a good thing for that generation?) - considering I graduated from high school when he was born, I guess I feel a little out of it - But, in keeping with W1P's comments below, it IS amazing this generation of teenagers and young adults that love those bands that I did/do too, look at the reception WB/DF received from the students of Berklee - they were mesmerized! (though I must admit I did burn out for a while on Led Zeppelin, but Jimmy's cd's made me appreciate them again...)

I am sure my parents were astounded when I kept spinning their 50's jazz lp's too, so keep on keepin on, right?

Good things last.

howdy, W1P! i don't even think it's that relevant whether Led Zep or others of their time had anything to do with social commentary or merely bundled a feel for what was ruling the youngsters .. i don't remember much of the days or let's say evenings and nights partying, listening intensively to music :-) i guess those early days of listening to music was to determine which way you were headed, even in musical taste or something. i loved the guitars on Royal Scam and searched and found in all kinds of directions .. Nils Lofgren was great as well! it is quite funny the music legacy of the 60's and 70's appeals to so many and for such a long time. Rock music. Hm!

And that's why indeed the tribute circle and Led Zepagain is nice, people get to hear the music they learned about decades ago (perhaps) and take it in with a nowadays ear. another layer yet added! sometimes you get what something is all about years later, right? to see it in its time frame and even appreciate it again. too bad i don't have much vinyl left of those days or else i'd take a stroll down that road. but thanks for the incentive, W1P! and Billy Joel had some jazzy rock or rocked jazz stuff as well, was quite surprised when i found out about that, really :-)

talk about guitars .. anyone familiar with Jean Paul Bourelly? when i first listened to him he had this Frank Zappa/Jimi Hendrix feel to him .. http://www.bourelly.com/
